Abdalla Samir Khalifa

Software Engineer / Java Developer

Backend engineer specializing in Java and the Spring ecosystem, with a track record of shipping well architected backend systems and contributing to open-source projects.

I contributed to JabRef, a widely used open-source Java application (4.7k+ GitHub stars), identified an Open-Closed Principle violation in the OCR module and refactored it using the Factory pattern to decouple engine creation. I also resolved user-facing bugs in the Journal Abbreviation module and removed hardcoded JavaFX styling in favor of reusable, theme consistent configurations.

On a team, built a food delivery platform, I contributed to system analysis and design, implemented the database schema and security model, wrote unit and integration tests, and set up Docker and Docker Compose for consistent deployment across environments.

I'm currently designing a modular-monolithic flight and hotel booking aggregator that integrates with 3rd party APIs, we have finalized the core function specifications for both modules and now working through system design, caching strategy, and async communication patterns before moving into implementation. I'm also deepening my knowledge of microservices and frontend development through structured reading and hands-on projects.

I came to backend engineering through self-directed study. Starting with core CS fundamentals and data structures implemented from scratch in C++, then C#, and finally specializing in Java and the Spring ecosystem.
