Overview

Release Notes

  • When getting Kafka offsets from data written to the output merge updated offsets with previous offsets to ensure all partitions are present

Closes #819

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Kafka offset tracking now accounts for existing maximum offsets when calculating ranges, helping prevent offsets from moving backward during regular runs, reruns, and repairs.
    • Partition offsets are combined with priority given to the primary values; missing partition entries are filled from the base values or defaulted to zero.
    • Uncommitted offsets now retain an optional minimum offset.

…ted offsets with previous offsets to ensure all partitions are present.

Walkthrough

Kafka offset range calculation now merges partition values and accepts a current maximum as a lower bound. Ingestion and uncommitted-offset repair pass applicable bounds to the calculation. Uncommitted offsets now retain their optional minimum offset.

Changes

Kafka Offset Range Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Kafka range merging
pramen/core/.../OffsetManagerUtils.scala, pramen/core/.../OffsetManagerUtilsSuite.scala
The range utility accepts an optional current maximum and merges Kafka partition offsets. Tests cover primary-offset precedence, gaps, and existing offset types.
Ingestion offset bounds
pramen/core/.../IncrementalIngestionJob.scala, pramen/core/.../MetastoreImpl.scala
Ingestion passes the maximum for the current info date during reruns or the maximum across dates otherwise. The metastore path passes its current maximum.
Uncommitted-offset repair
pramen/api/.../DataOffset.scala, pramen/core/.../OffsetRecordConverter.scala, pramen/core/.../IncrementalIngestionJob.scala
Uncommitted offsets carry the parsed optional minimum. Repair uses the greatest recorded minimum as the range calculation lower bound.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Guard against empty partition sets in mergeKafkaPartitions.

partitions1.keys.max throws UnsupportedOperationException when primaryValue.value is empty. partitions2.keys.max throws the same when baseValue.value is empty. The call from getMinMaxValueFromData passes a non-empty minValue and maxValue (the DataFrame is non-empty). A currentMaxOffset that is a KafkaValue with no partitions would still trigger the failure. Compute the maximum over the combined keys with a default.

Build the Kafka repair lower bound per partition.

When multiple uncommitted Kafka records have populated minOffsetOpt values, minOffsets.max compares OffsetValue.KafkaValue instances. OffsetValue.KafkaValue.compareTo throws when the partition counts or partition numbers differ. A partial-partition uncommitted history can therefore fail before the repair commits or cleans up the offsets.

Merge the minima by partition before passing the lower bound to getMinMaxValueFromData. Preserve the greatest recorded minimum for each partition instead of selecting one complete offset value.
