🔴 Invalid reply blocks missed reply recovery
When a target agent sends a blank or oversized reply, catchUp stops at that message. buildReply rejects it before relayCursor advances, so later missed replies remain unpublished.
Learn more
The bridge scans the Relay DM conversation in ascending message order and persists relayCursor after each item. buildReply rejects blank text and text over 65,536 UTF-8 bytes. A reply that triggers either check fails before the cursor advances, so the next scheduled reconciliation reads and fails on the same reply. Every later reply missed during a WebSocket outage remains behind it.
Example: The target sends a whitespace-only reply at ID 102 and a valid reply at ID 103 while the bridge is offline. Catch-up starting at ID 101 repeatedly fails at 102 and never publishes 103.
Recommended fix: Distinguish permanent validation failures from retryable publish and network failures in catchUp. Log and advance past an invalid reply, but keep the cursor behind transient failures until they succeed.

🟡 Replies lose their existing Buzz thread
For a Buzz reply without an explicit root marker, rootEventId treats the reply itself as the root. The bot's response then starts a separate thread rather than joining the original one.
Learn more
NIP-10 replies can carry unmarked e references instead of an explicitly marked root. The bridge currently ignores those references and stores the mention's own ID as its root. buildReply then signs a response with the wrong root tag.
Example: A mention with an unmarked e reference to original message A and ID B produces a bot response with B as its root; the response belongs under A.
Recommended fix: Parse the supported NIP-10 root conventions: prefer the explicit root marker, then the first unmarked e reference for legacy threads, falling back to the event ID only when no usable parent exists.

🟡 Reconnects retain abort listeners indefinitely
Each completed reconnect delay leaves a listener on the bridge's abort signal. After repeated Buzz disconnects, run accumulates listeners and emits a listener-leak warning.
Learn more
A { once: true } listener disappears only after its event fires. Normal reconnect delays end by timer, leaving every abort listener registered on the same long-lived signal. Reconnecting more than ten times reaches Node's listener warning threshold, and subsequent attempts keep retaining closures.
Example: An unavailable Buzz server causes twelve consecutive connection failures. The bridge completes eleven timer delays without aborting; all eleven abort listeners remain attached.
Recommended fix: Remove the abort listener when the timer settles, whether completion came from the timer or an abort.

Unpublishable reply text permanently blocks catch-up
Medium Severity
Relay's thread endpoint accepts any nonempty string, including replies exceeding 65,536 UTF-8 bytes or containing only whitespace. Such a reply throws here before receiveRelayOnce() records an outcome. catchUp() consequently aborts before advancing relayCursor, and every subsequent reconciliation—including after restart—fails on the same reply. Later responses missed by the WebSocket are never recovered. Handle unsupported text with splitting or a durable terminal failure so one unpublishable response cannot block the remaining history.

Catch-up advances past replies whose mappings are still pending
Medium Severity
With an existing conversation cursor, a target reply can be visible before receiveBuzzOnce() finishes saving its request mapping: DM delivery starts before the HTTP response, and restart replay can also be restoring an already-accepted DM. BuzzSocket invokes reconciliation at EOSE without awaiting deliveryQueue, while periodic reconciliation runs independently. If catch-up processes that reply first, receiveRelayOnce() returns false for the missing mapping, but this write still advances the cursor past it. Saving the mapping afterward does not revisit the reply, permanently losing the Buzz response if its live delivery was already consumed. Coordinate catch-up with pending request restoration and distinguish temporarily unmapped replies from conclusively ignored messages before advancing the cursor.

Do not advance the cursor past an unhandled reply
When reconciliation overlaps receiveBuzz(), a fast target response can appear in the DM history before the corresponding request record finishes persisting. In that window receiveRelay() returns false because it cannot find the parent request, but catchUp() still advances relayCursor past the response, so neither later reconciliation nor the already-missed realtime event can publish it. Advance the cursor for target messages only after they are handled or definitively determined not to belong to a pending Buzz request.

Quarantine invalid replies instead of wedging catch-up
If the target sends whitespace-only text or more than 65,536 UTF-8 bytes, buildReply() throws here before a reply record is saved. During catch-up that exception aborts the loop before its cursor update, so every subsequent reconciliation retries the same poison message and replies missed after it can never be recovered. Record the failure as skipped/rejected, or otherwise advance past it, so one unpublishable agent response cannot permanently block reconciliation.

Catch-up stalls on invalid replies
High Severity
catchUp awaits receiveRelay and only then advances relayCursor. buildReply throws for empty or over-64KiB text before a reply record is stored, so the exception aborts the loop with the cursor unchanged. One oversized target-agent reply then becomes a poison pill: every later catch-up hits the same message, throws again, and never processes newer replies. After a WebSocket gap, those answers are dropped for good.

Catch-up compares IDs lexicographically
Medium Severity
Catch-up treats Relay message ids as strings: it keeps item.id > cursor and sorts with localeCompare. Engine snowflakes are variable-length decimal text and must be compared numerically. The new tests pad ids to 19 characters, so they never hit a digit-length change. When ids grow a digit, newer replies compare as older, pagination stops early, and catch-up silently skips them.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Isolate failures in replayPending so one rejected reply does not block all reconciliation.
replayPending awaits publishReply for each unpublished reply. It does not catch per-item errors. Suppose Buzz rejects one signed event permanently, for example with an OK false "blocked" or "invalid" response, or the event is too large for the relay. In that case, publishReply throws on every attempt. Iteration stops at that entry, so later pending replies never get published.
In cli.ts, reconcile runs await bridge.replayPending(); await bridge.catchUp();. When replayPending throws, catchUp never runs either. The result is a permanent reconciliation outage: every 15-second tick and every reconnect fails at the same record, and only manual state-file surgery recovers it.
Catch errors per record. Log them and continue. Then decide how to handle the failure: either track an attempt count, or mark the record as failed when the relay reports a terminal rejection.

Compare Relay snowflake IDs numerically in both layers.
Relay snowflake IDs are unpadded decimal strings. Lexical comparison gives the wrong order across digit-width boundaries. With cursor "99", a page containing "990" and "100" marks only "990" as relevant, stops pagination, and advances the cursor past the numerically newer "100".
Use length-then-value comparisons in the DM endpoint and a numeric comparator in catchUp.

Advance relayCursor past replies that can never become valid Buzz events.
catchUp calls receiveRelay(item.id) and updates relayCursor only after that call returns. buildReply throws on two kinds of agent reply: an empty or whitespace-only text (for example, a blocks-only message), and a text longer than 65,536 UTF-8 bytes. The throw happens before state.replies[id] is saved. The cursor then stays at the previous item. Every later catchUp fetches the same message, throws again, and never reaches newer messages. One such reply stops catch-up for every reply after it.
For deterministic validation failures, advance the cursor. Keep transient failures from publishReply or relay.message as retryable. One option is to catch the buildReply error inside receiveRelayOnce, log it, and return false. Another option is to truncate oversized text.

Remove the backoff abort listener after the timer fires.
Each backoff wait adds an abort listener to signal. The { once: true } option removes that listener only when the signal aborts. When the timer resolves first, the listener stays attached. A long-running bridge with a flaky Buzz connection adds one listener per reconnect. Node then logs MaxListenersExceededWarning for the AbortSignal, and memory grows without limit. Remove the listener when the timer fires.

Update the backoff wait Promise so its abort listener is removed when the timer
fires, while preserving the existing behavior that abort clears the timer and
resolves the wait. Use the same handler for registration and removal in the
backoff logic.

An event that always fails blocks every later Buzz mention.
deliveryQueue processes events serially. If onEvent rejects, the loop retries the same event every five seconds while the socket remains open. It never skips that event, so later room mentions remain queued.
Handle permanent relay.dm failures separately from transient failures. Use RelayError.retryable when available, or cap the retry attempts. Record or log a permanent failure and allow the queue to continue.

Update the retry loop in the `deliveryQueue` handler around `onEvent` so a
permanent `relay.dm` failure does not block later events: use
`RelayError.retryable` when available, or cap retries, then log or record the
permanent failure and let the queue continue. Preserve retries for transient
failures.

Summary
Add
relaycast buzz.bridgeto connect one Buzz room bot to an existing Relaycast agent. Signed Buzzkind:9mentions become idempotent Relay DMs, and the agent's threaded replies are signed and published back into the same Buzz thread. The bridge handles NIP-42 relay authentication, reconnects, Relay DM catch-up, and durable retry of the exact signed reply. It includes setup guidance for Buzz community and room membership, bot profiles, the mention picker, and the literal-name fallback.
This replaces the proposed native Buzz runner approach in AgentWorkforce/relay-desktop#561 and #561. The associated runner-only session importer in AgentWorkforce/relayhistory#512 was closed with them. The bridge uses existing agent sessions and makes no macOS or Linux app UI changes.
Verification
npm test -w relaycast(10 tests)npm run lint -w relaycastnpx turbo build --filter=relaycastnpm pack -w relaycast --dry-run --jsonnode packages/cli/dist/cli.js buzz.bridge --helpDeployment notes
One bridge process and durable state file are required per room. A dedicated Relay agent session is recommended per room audience. The bridge has not been tested against a live hosted Buzz community because this environment has no bot key or room membership. Its state retains processed event IDs and replays from its initial start time; high-volume rooms will eventually need retention and checkpointing.

Medium Risk
New integration path handles Buzz private keys and Relay agent tokens in a supervised process, with durable state and cross-network message routing; scope is CLI-only but misconfiguration or duplicate bridge processes could duplicate or mis-thread replies.
Overview
Adds
relaycast buzz.bridge, a long-running CLI that connects one Buzz room bot to an existing Relaycast agent (no agent spawning). Signed Buzzkind:9room mentions become idempotent Relay DMs to a named target agent; when that agent threads a reply to the bridge DM, the bridge signs and publishes a NIP-10 Buzz reply in the original thread. The implementation lives under
packages/cli/src/buzz-bridge/:BuzzSocket(NIP-42 relay auth, subscribe/reconnect, publish with OK acks),BuzzRoomBridge(mention validation, DM forwarding, reply mapping), and a0600durable state file (room/agent binding, processed Buzz IDs, signed-but-unpublished replies, Relay DM cursor for paginated catch-up). Env-based config addsnostr-tools,ws,@relaycast/sdk, andzodto therelaycastpackage.Docs cover setup in
docs/buzz-room-bridge.mdand the README; the unreleased changelog notes the feature. Tests cover mention rules, end-to-end Buzz→Relay→Buzz flow, publish retry after restart, multi-page Relay catch-up, and WebSocket auth/delivery.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 11c7cad.
