feat: option to remove whitespace at the start and end of Input and TextArea values (trimWhitespace) - #4403
Adds trimWhitespace to Input and TextArea. When it is true, whitespace at the start and end of the value is removed when the user leaves the field. Whitespace inside the value is kept, and nothing changes while the user types. It is false by default, so apps that are already published save the same as before. The issue has the background and the steps.
The value is trimmed in onBlur, right before the existing debounce('blur'), so the trimmed value is saved at once. Two cases are left alone:
read-only fields, which the user cannot change;
a blur because the whole window lost focus (document.hasFocus() is false). The user may be copying something from another window, and would otherwise lose the space or line break they just typed.
Worth knowing:
The value is trimmed only when the user leaves the field. A value from prefill, the backend or the API stays as it is until the user enters and leaves the field, and is then trimmed too, unless the field is read-only.
The error from a pattern still shows while the user is in the field. It goes away when they leave it if whitespace was the only problem, since the value is trimmed only on blur.
A value with only whitespace becomes empty, so a required field gets the required error in the frontend instead of being accepted. The backend's required validation already treats such a value as empty.
Address has text fields too, but I have left it out to keep this PR small.
Same steps as in the issue, with app-frontend 4 from the CDN and with this branch, for the e-mail field with a pattern:
CDN (4)
This branch
In v9 (src/App/frontend in altinn-studio), Input and TextArea have the same onBlur (debounce('blur')), so the change should carry over when you sync. I have not made a separate PR. The issue asks whether you want it on by default in v9.
Studio's editor for v4 apps reads its own copies of the component schemas (useComponentSchemaQuery in ux-editor-v4), so it will not show the property until those copies are updated. Until then, it can be set in the layout JSON. I have made Altinn/altinn-studio#21626 for that, and can make a PR to altinn-studio-docs once the name is settled.
No functionality has been changed/added, so no documentation is needed

InputComponent.test.tsx and TextAreaComponent.test.tsx each have a new describe('trimWhitespace') with:
a table of typed values: spaces at both ends with the property unset, false and true, and with true, a space after two words (Input), a line break at the end (TextArea), only spaces, and nothing to trim;
a stored value with spaces that the user only enters and leaves, with and without readOnly;
a blur where the whole window lost focus.
jsdom returns false from document.hasFocus() while an element loses focus, unlike browsers, so the tests set it to true, and to false for the window case. Without the change in the components, 8 of the 36 tests in the two files fail. Without the readOnly check, the two read-only rows fail, and without the document.hasFocus() check, the two window tests fail.
yarn tsc and the full yarn test pass locally on Node 22 (172 test suites and 3709 tests passed, 1 suite and 61 tests skipped), and ESLint and Prettier pass on the changed files. The changed lines are covered.
Manual test in localtest with a copy of our template app (Altinn.App 8.12.11). It has a pattern on the e-mail field, and trimWhitespace: true on the e-mail and phone Inputs and on a TextArea. The local builds were loaded through localtest's frontendVersion cookie, in headless Edge with Playwright:
app-frontend 4 from the CDN and main (2899160) built locally: «Feil format eller verdi» after leaving the e-mail field with ola@example.no and a space. The spaces were saved in all three fields, and in a value inserted in one go right before clicking «Neste». /validate returned the DataAnnotations error for the pattern.
This branch built locally: ola@example.no without the error, 90000000, Ola Nordmann with the space between the words kept, and kari@example.no after inserting it and clicking «Neste». /validate returned no errors.
A field with a pattern on the same page as «Send inn», and a click on «Send inn» right after typing ola@example.no and a space, both before and after autosave had run. With the CDN, the error showed and nothing was submitted. With this branch, ola@example.no was saved and process/next got past validation. It then failed on the PDF, because my localtest's PDF service could not load the locally built frontend through the frontendVersion cookie. The same app submitted through the API got its PDF.
I have not tested the window case in a real browser, only in the unit tests. In headless Edge, document.hasFocus() was true during a blur by Tab to the next field, a click on a button and a click on text on the page.

New Features
Input and text area fields can now optionally trim leading and trailing whitespace when users leave a field. Internal whitespace is preserved, and trimming is off by default.
Trimming applies only to editable fields while the window is focused.

Walkthrough
Input and TextArea now support an opt-in trimWhitespace setting. On blur, each component trims and saves leading and trailing whitespace when the field is editable and the document has focus. Internal whitespace is preserved, and the default remains false. Tests cover enabled, disabled, read-only, and lost-focus cases.
Changes: Input and TextArea whitespace trimming
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Trimming option and eligibility src/codegen/Common.ts, src/layout/Input/config.ts, src/layout/TextArea/config.ts, src/utils/inputUtils.tsx
The common schema and component configs define the opt-in setting with a false default. The shared predicate requires trimming to be enabled, the field to be editable, the document to have focus, and the value to differ from its trimmed form.
Input trims and saves the value on blur when the shared predicate allows it, then triggers the existing blur debounce. Tests cover enabled and disabled settings, read-only fields, and lost window focus.
TextArea trims and saves the value on blur when the shared predicate allows it, then triggers the existing blur debounce. Tests cover enabled and disabled settings, read-only fields, and lost window focus.
Numeric-formatted inputs may retain surrounding whitespace despite the enabled option. The impact is limited to those inputs.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: an opt-in trimWhitespace option that removes leading and trailing whitespace from Input and TextArea values. It follows the conventional feat: prefix and matches the changeset (Common schema, Input and TextArea components, config, and the new shouldTrimWhitespaceOnBlur utility). At 102 characters it is longer than ideal, but it stays specific and readable.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has a clear non-technical summary of the change, a closes #4402 related-issue link, and a completed Verification/QA checklist. It also explains the default (false), the read-only and window-focus exclusions, the Address exclusion, manual test evidence, and the unit test coverage. The template's Labels and Sprint board items are marked as not permitted, and the author asks for help with them. The Studio follow-up is linked as Altinn/altinn-studio#21626. The description is thorough and does not need changes to pass.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #4402 requests an opt-in trimWhitespace property on Input and TextArea. The diff adds the property to both component configurations with a false default and adds the shared schema definition. Both components trim leading and trailing whitespace on blur when enabled, preserve internal whitespace, and keep the value unchanged when the option is disabled. The blur logic excludes read-only fields and window-focus loss. Unit tests cover both components, defaults, stored values, whitespace-only values, internal whitespace, read-only fields, and window-focus loss.

Explanation
All changed files support issue #4402. The schema and configuration expose the requested option. The utility centralizes the blur condition. The component changes implement the behavior. The added unit tests verify the behavior. No unrelated component or Address-field changes are present.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Apply the blur handler to numeric-formatted Inputs.
When a numeric-formatted Input loads a whitespace-padded string, its NumericInput overrides inputProps.onBlur at Line 213. Blur clears localValue but never reaches this trimming check. Compose the numeric handler with the shared blur handler so trimWhitespace: true also trims that stored value. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
