**Key properties:**
- Consumer cursors are independent — multiple consumers can read the same source at different positions
- New consumer cursors initialize to the latest message (no backlog flooding)
- A source's first run (no source cursor yet) starts a cursor on it for every consumer that already has one, before it stores anything, so its first records are unread for that consumer and wake a `messages` gate that watches any source
- Consumer cursors expire after N days of inactivity (configurable, default: 2 days); a `messages` gate that checks the consumer renews the cursors it reads (see [cron.md](cron.md#messages))
- Cross-source deduplication happens naturally because one agent session sees messages from all sources

### Linear

The issue notifications of the Linear user that an API key belongs to: issues
assigned to it, mentions, and comments, as `linear` records. The agent is a
regular Linear user (a service account, or a person's personal API key), not a
Linear agent app: there are no webhooks and no agent sessions, and Nerve needs
no public URL. It writes back (comments, status, assignee) through
[Linear's MCP server](https://linear.app/docs/mcp), which this source registers
with the same key, so everything it does in Linear is done as that user.

- **Adapter:** `nerve/sources/linear.py` — Linear's GraphQL API (`https://api.linear.app/graphql`), with `httpx`. A personal API key (`lin_api_…`) goes as it is in `Authorization`, an OAuth access token as `Bearer`
- **Query:** the user's `notifications` of the types asked for, created since the cursor (`createdAt >= since`, archived ones included), 50 per page, every page up to 10 (500 notifications; more between two runs logs a warning and the oldest are not reported). The viewer is asked for on the first page. `batch_size` does not cap this source. Linear allows 2,500 requests an hour per user; the default schedule makes 12
- **Read state is left alone:** notifications are read whether or not they are read, and none is marked read, so the user's Linear inbox stays as the person who reads it left it, and a failed run reports the same notifications on the next one
- **Cursor:** JSON, `{"v": 1, "since": <newest createdAt>, "at": [<notification ids created in that millisecond>], "listed_at": <when it was read>, "viewer": <user id>}`. On `createdAt`, since `updatedAt` moves when a notification is read or e-mailed. A notification is new when it was created after `since`, or in that millisecond and not in `at`
- **First run:** the baseline. The cursor is set at the newest notification of the last hour (else an hour ago, which leaves room for a difference between this clock and Linear's) and nothing is reported. So does a cursor that cannot be read, and a key that now belongs to another user
- **No backfill beyond a day:** a run more than a day after the last one reads as of a day and an hour ago, as the [GitHub Repos](#github-repos) source does: the last day is reported, nothing older
- **Failures:** an HTTP error, a rate limit (HTTP 429 or `RATELIMITED`), a GraphQL error at HTTP 200, a key Linear rejects, or a timeout (30 s) fails the run; the cursor stays and the runner backs off
- **Default schedule:** `*/5 * * * *` (every 5 min)
- **Disabled by default**

| Field | Type | Default | Description |
|-------|------|---------|-------------|
| `linear.api_key` | string | `""` | A personal API key (Linear → Settings → Security & access → Personal API keys) or an OAuth access token, of the user the agent acts as. Belongs in `config.local.yaml`. Without one an enabled source is skipped with a warning, and `nerve doctor` warns |
| `linear.types` | list | `[assigned, mentioned, comments]` | `assigned` (`issueAssignedToYou`), `mentioned` (`issueMention`, `issueCommentMention`), `comments` (`issueNewComment`: new comments on the issues the user is subscribed to). Reactions are never asked for. Case does not matter; an unknown type, or an empty list, refuses to load |
| `linear.include_bots` | bool | `false` | Also report the comments and mentions whose actor is an app (`actor.app`), a bot (`botActor`), an external user or Linear itself. An assignment is reported whoever made it, triage rules included |
| `linear.deny_actors` | list | `[]` | Case-insensitive globs on the actor's name, display name or e-mail, with the [guardrail](#guardrails-inbox-filtering) rules |
| `linear.allow_teams` / `linear.deny_teams` | list | `[]` | Case-insensitive globs on the issue's team key (`ENG`). A non-empty allow list drops every other team (fail-closed); deny wins |
| `linear.mcp` | bool | `true` | Register `linear` (`https://mcp.linear.app/mcp`, the key as a bearer token) in the agent's MCP servers while the source is on and has a key. An `mcp_servers.linear` entry of your own wins. External auth mode ignores the configured MCP servers, and `nerve doctor` warns |

Events (the record's `Event:` line and `event` metadata):

| `event` | Notification | Record ID |
|---------|--------------|-----------|
| `assigned` | `issueAssignedToYou` | `<ID>:notification:<notification id>` |
| `mentioned` | `issueMention` (in the description) | `<ID>:notification:<notification id>` |
| `mentioned` | `issueCommentMention` | `<ID>:comment:<comment id>` |
| `commented` / `replied` | `issueNewComment`, `replied` when it is in a thread | `<ID>:comment:<comment id>` |

`<ID>` is the issue's identifier (`ENG-12`). Linear sends a mention in a
comment and the new comment as two notifications; one comment is one record,
the mention. Two comments are two records. The record's `timestamp` is the
notification's `createdAt`.

Before anything is stored, a notification is dropped that the user caused
itself (`actor.id`, or the comment's author, is the viewer: the agent's own
comments never come back to it), one without an issue, and the ones the
settings above leave out. The inbox guardrail applies the settings again to
what arrives (`team_key` against the team lists, `actor` and `actor_email`
against `deny_actors`, `actor_kind` against `include_bots` except for
assignments, `notification_type` against `types`), which catches the records
fetched before a reload changed them. Everything here follows a reload, the
MCP server too (`mcp_reload` in a chat, or new sessions).

The record (type `linear_notification`) has a summary such as
`[ENG-12] Assigned to you by Alice: Fix the login`,
`[ENG-12] Alice mentioned you: Fix the login` or
`[ENG-12] Alice replied: Fix the login`. Its content has the lines `Issue:`,
`Event:`, `Team:`, `State:`, `Priority:`, `Assignee:`, `Actor:`,
`Issue URL:` and `Comment URL:`, then the description (an assignment or a
mention in it), or the comment replied to and the comment, each capped at
4,000 characters. Like every source record it is untrusted content. Its
metadata, all strings:

| Key | Value |
|-----|-------|
| `identifier` | The issue's identifier (`ENG-12`) |
| `issue_id` | The issue's id, for `mcp__linear__get_issue` / `save_issue` |
| `team_key` | The issue's team key |
| `event` | `assigned`, `mentioned`, `commented` or `replied` |
| `notification_type` | Linear's notification type |
| `notification_id` | The notification's id |
| `actor`, `actor_email`, `actor_id` | Who caused it |
| `actor_kind` | `user`, `app`, `bot`, `external` or `system` |
| `state`, `state_type` | The issue's workflow state and its type (`unstarted`, `started`, …) |
| `assignee` | The issue's assignee |
| `comment_id` | The comment's id; empty without a comment |
| `issue_url`, `comment_url` | The pages of the issue and the comment |
| `subject_url` | The comment's page, else the issue's, which the Sources page links to |

### Cursor Design

**Source cursors** (producer-side): Each source owns its cursor semantics. The framework treats cursors as opaque strings stored in the `sync_cursors` SQLite table. Sources return the next cursor in `FetchResult.next_cursor` — the runner stores it as-is. Cursors advance after successful ingestion (persist to inbox).

**Consumer cursors**: Stored in `consumer_cursors` table with composite key `(consumer, source)`. Each consumer has an independent cursor per source, using the implicit `rowid` of `source_messages` as the offset. New cursors initialize to `MAX(rowid)` (no backlog). Cursors expire after `consumer_cursor_ttl_days` of inactivity.
**Consumer cursors**: Stored in `consumer_cursors` table with composite key `(consumer, source)`. Each consumer has an independent cursor per source, using the implicit `rowid` of `source_messages` as the offset. New cursors initialize to `MAX(rowid)` (no backlog); before a source's first run, every consumer that has a cursor elsewhere gets one on it at its `MAX(rowid)`, so its first records are unread. Cursors expire after `consumer_cursor_ttl_days` of inactivity.

**Inclusive APIs:** Both GitHub and Gmail APIs use inclusive cursor semantics (returning records `>= cursor`). Gmail advances the cursor at query time (+1s) and applies client-side dedup as a safety net. GitHub queries the cursor itself, because a notification can land in the cursor's own second; storage skips the unchanged thread listed again.

## Linear

A worker can take Linear issues as a regular Linear user: give it a service
account (or a person's personal API key) and switch on the Linear source. It
then reads that user's notifications (assignments, mentions, comments) and
writes back through Linear's MCP server, as that user (see
[sources.md](sources.md#linear)):

A worker has no `inbox-processor`, so add a job that runs when a Linear record
arrives, in `config/cron/jobs.yaml`:

```yaml
jobs:
- id: linear-tasks
schedule: "*/5 * * * *"
run_if:
- type: messages
sources: [linear]
consumer: inbox
prompt: |
shows whether the source is on and the MCP server registered; `nerve sync
