Summary

Learners can now attach documents to messages in the AI Assistant chat. Cosmo reads them, answers questions about them, and can use their contents to draft an email. Before this, Cosmo only saw the names of attached files and was told to refuse document analysis.

Changes

Most of the plumbing already existed. The assistant-message trigger in protocol.yaml already declared FILES: file[] and forwarded it to the model, and the Octavus chat client was already set up with /api/upload-urls. This PR adds the chat UI and passes FILES through chat.send.

Points worth a close look:

  • Gating. A new assistant.attachments flag (default true) turns the feature on. Chat accepts only the attachments.allowedTypes that the model can read: PDF, images, .txt, .md, .csv. Word files are rejected with "File type not allowed" so they don't upload and then fail silently. assistantAttachmentsEnabled in lib/assistant.js is shared by the server and the browser.
  • Server enforcement. When the flag is off, /api/assistant/trigger drops input.FILES, so a client can't send files anyway.
  • Prompting. Whether Cosmo can read chat attachments is now part of the CAPABILITIES block that the server builds at session creation. The static prompts no longer say Cosmo can't parse uploads. They still say outbound email attachments are name-only, so recipients and Cosmo behave as before for those.
  • Persistence. Saved transcripts keep only file names and types. The presigned URLs expire, so they aren't stored. Names show as chips on user bubbles after a reload, and the conversation report adds an "Attached:" line.
  • Send stays disabled while an upload is in flight. "New conversation" clears pending attachments, since the uploads belong to the old Octavus session.

Before merging

The prompt edits need npm run deploy:agent:dev (and prod when we ship). Without the deploy, it still works because the new CAPABILITIES text comes from the server. But the deployed system prompt would still claim Cosmo can't read uploads, which contradicts it.

Testing

  • npm test covers type filtering, the FILES payload, Send held during upload, and file chips on live and saved messages. It also checks the capability text with the flag on and off, plus scenario validation.
  • Manually, with npm run dev:
    1. Open the AI Assistant, click the paperclip, and attach a PDF.
    2. Ask a question only the PDF can answer, then ask Cosmo to draft an email from it. I tried this with a generated PDF: Cosmo quoted its launch date, budget, and owner, then proposed an insertable draft with those facts.
    3. Reload. The file chip still shows on the earlier message.
    4. Try a .docx. It's rejected with "File type not allowed".
    5. Set "assistant": { "attachments": false } in scenario.json. The paperclip is hidden.

Only PDF was verified end to end. Images and text files take the same path, but I haven't confirmed Octavus passes .txt/.md/.csv through to the model.

📝 Walkthrough

Assistant chat now supports configurable document attachments. The client filters files by supported extension, uploads accepted files, and sends ready file references with chat messages. User messages display attachment names and types, and conversation transcripts include file names. Scenario validation, assistant instructions, and server handling now account for whether attachments are enabled.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Validate allowedTypes before calling .map.

If a scenario sets attachments.allowedTypes to a string, withScenarioDefaults preserves it and validateScenario reports no error. This line then throws a TypeError when the server builds assistant capability instructions. Reject a non-array value during scenario validation so the author gets a configuration error instead of a failed assistant session.
