LaTeX | Standardize on $$...$$ for inline math - #80
Conversation
Make $$...$$ the canonical inline LaTeX form, with \$ for literal dollars inside and outside math. Protect math from markdown parsing in every activity type, not just Sort Into Boxes. Legacy $...$, \(...\) and \[...\] still render. Fix the Sort item parser stripping LaTeX backslashes, and only build Sort boxes from __Categories__. Convert the LaTeX examples to $$...$$ and document the standard in the README. Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com>
Keep $...$, \(...\), and \[...\] fixtures in the examples picker so we can confirm those forms still render. Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com>

If a Sort item contains
$$\sin(x)$$,/api/resultswrites doubled backslashes toanswer.md. On reload, parseSortItemEntrycopies the math region unchanged, so the persisted item contains$$\\sin(x)$$instead of the original command. Escape separators and backslashes only where the new parser will unescape them; leave recognized math regions unchanged.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Summary
Makes
$$...$$the standard way to write LaTeX in activities. It renders inline with the surrounding text, and\$is a literal dollar sign both inside and outside math. Existing content using$...$,\(...\), or\[...\]keeps working. Before this, how math behaved depended on the activity type. Only Sort Into Boxes protected math from the markdown parser, so everywhere else
markeddropped the backslash in\(,\{,\\, and\,, and turned*...*inside math into italics.Changes
renderMarkdownmoved tolib/render-markdown.jsand now always sets math regions aside beforemarkedruns, then restores them HTML-escaped.$$...$$is set aside before\$is handled, which is what lets\$work inside math. Previously the\$escape split the expression across a<span>and KaTeX skipped it.$$...$$is inline. KaTeX's$$delimiter is nowdisplay: falseinkatex-render.jsand in the side-content iframe. Display math is\[...\]only. No existing content used$$.:separator, so chips like\sin(x)rendered as plain text (this was already broken insort-into-boxes-latex-derivatives.md). It now unescapes only\:and\\, and ignores colons inside math. It moved tolib/sort-item-entry.jsso it can be tested.__Categories__. An item naming an undeclared category used to add an extra box silently. It now fails to load with an error, the same way Matrix handles an unknown column. This is the one change that can break existing content: activities with__Items__but no__Categories__, or with near-miss category labels, will no longer load. None of the examples do this.$$...$$, andtext-input-latex.mdhas a new question showing\$inside and outside math. The README has a new "Math (LaTeX)" section. One side effect worth knowing: two unescaped dollar signs on the same line (for example, "between $5 and $10") were already rendered as math by KaTeX. Now markdown between them is not applied either. Writing
\$fixes both.Testing
