Edit mode | Split assessment files with --answer-key - #84
Edit mode can write the split assessment format (question file without answers, plus a companion answer-key file) when you pass --answer-key.
The editor form is the same. You still fill in answers there. On save they go into the answer-key file, and the question file keeps only the learner-facing content. On load the two files are merged so the answers show up in the form again.
--copy-markdown still copies the combined form, with answers inline.
Technical changes
--edit now accepts an optional --answer-key <file>. Load merges the pair into the combined markdown the editor already understands. Save splits that markdown back into a stripped question and an __Answer Key__ file.
The split/merge lives in lib/split-answer-key.js and walks markdown sections so we don't round-trip through buildActivityFromMarkdown (that parser shuffles options and items). Coverage matches the assessment examples: Text Input, MCQ (including multi-select), FIB, Matching, Matrix, Sort, and Swipe. Text Input keeps [kind] / [options] on the stripped question so the learner UI still knows the input shape.
Testing
From the repo root: node server.js --edit /tmp/q.md --answer-key /tmp/q-answer-key.md
Open http://localhost:3000/, pick Text Input (or load an existing combined file), fill in a question and a correct answer, and wait for auto-save.
Open /tmp/q.md: answers should be gone from __Correct Answers__, with [kind] / [options] still present if they were set.
Open /tmp/q-answer-key.md: it should have __Answer Key__ with - Question 1: ....
Reload the editor: the answers you typed should still be in the form.
Repeat with Multiple Choice (mark two options correct) and confirm the question file has multi-select under __Question Options__ and the key lists both labels.
Without --answer-key, confirm edit mode still writes one combined file, as before.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change adds conversion between combined activity Markdown and separate question and answer-key Markdown for seven activity types. Editor mode can use an optional answer-key file when loading and saving. The README documents the CLI option, editor page, and API behavior. New tests cover splitting, merging, escaping, and round trips. The editor also stops initialization and saves after a load failure.
Loading and saving a Text Input question with an empty keyed answer can remove its validation settings. Preserve those settings before merging.

Write split files with atomic replacement and preserve a consistent pair.
/api/editor/save writes the stripped question file before the answer-key file. If the answer-key write fails, the question file remains updated while the previous answer key remains on disk. A later /api/editor/load can merge the new question with stale answers and discard newer answer edits.
Direct fs.writeFile can also expose a partially written target to a concurrent load or leave one after a process failure. Writing each file to a temporary file in the same directory and renaming it reduces this exposure. However, atomic renames alone do not make the two-file save transactional. Write the answer key first, then replace the question file, and define recovery or consistency handling for failures between the two renames.

I changed save to write the answer key first, then the question file, so a failed question write does not leave a stripped question paired with a stale key.
Temp-file rename plus recovery for a two-file pair is more machinery than this local editor needs, so I am leaving that off.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@BrianGenisio Understood. I won’t press for temporary-file renames or recovery in this local editor.
Writing the answer key first avoids updating the question when the answer-key write fails. One risk remains: if the subsequent question write fails, the new answer key can be paired with an old or partially written question.
Would you like a follow-up issue for that remaining risk?

Load now returns 409 in that case. Directory-creation errors on save go through the write callback instead of throwing in the request handler.

Reject answer keys whose __Type__ differs from the question, or that hold content but yield no entries.
mergeQuestionAndAnswerKey takes the type from the question and never compares it with the key's __Type__. A non-empty key with no parseable entries also loads as the bare question. The editor then shows empty answers, and a later save from the editor rewrites the key file from the form state. A mismatched key can merge into wrong answers and still load with HTTP 200.
Keep loading for the scaffold that formatAnswerKeyMarkdown writes when a question has no answers. Reject a key whose __Type__ differs from the question type. Reject non-empty key content that yields no entries. Return a non-OK response from /api/editor/load in both cases. Do not add a plain throw on empty parsed answers: that would break reloading a question saved with blank answers.

Reject non-string markdown payloads.
When split mode is enabled, splitCombinedMarkdown converts any truthy value with String(...). A request with {"markdown":{}} can therefore write [object Object] to the question file and an empty answer key, then return success. Validate typeof data.markdown === 'string' before splitting and return HTTP 400 otherwise. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Reject a missing question type before merging.
If the question file has no parseable __Type__ section, this fallback uses the answer-key type but does not add a type to the question. The load endpoint then returns success with a null questionType. The editor prompts for a type despite loading an existing answer key. Reject this inconsistent file pair instead of treating it as a valid merge. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve Text Input annotations when an answer-key value is empty.
When the key contains - Question 1:, values contains ''. replaceListItems then replaces the question file’s - [kind: string] item with an empty item. Loading and saving that pair loses the validation metadata. Keep the question item’s annotations when the key value is empty. The new empty-value test should assert that [kind: string] survives the merge. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
