Summary

Adds an optional assessment mode so the simulator can run a graded, multi-level prompt-engineering task entirely in the browser. It turns on only when session.config.json has an assessment block. Without it, courses behave exactly as before.

Assessment mode

  • Reference panel for materials, plus a level label, an intro line, and a "New level" banner. The page polls GET /api/assessment/stage and reloads when the level changes.
  • Locked provided cases. The server supplies them and the browser can't edit them. Each has an include toggle, and candidates can add their own cases.
  • New metrics:
    • field-match checks labeled Label: value lines.
    • custom-check has the judge apply the candidate's own PASS/FAIL criteria.
  • Calibration. Test my check (POST /api/check/calibrate) compares the check with reviewer-labeled samples.
  • Consistency per case and overall. Unreadable outputs never count as agreeing.
  • Notes panel and run-cost estimate.
  • Server-enforced limits: runs (up to 10), cases (up to 20), call budget, and prompt, criteria and notes length. Over-limit text shows a counter and an error instead of being truncated silently.
  • Copy/paste measurement against the materials, using four-word phrases (lib/copy-detection.js), available to hidden tests. The submission report no longer prints a copy/paste verdict.
  • Grader files. .codesignal/submission.json and .md plus evaluations.jsonl. lib/grading.js lets hidden tests re-run a saved prompt or check exactly the way the simulator scores it, so browser-reported scores are never trusted.
  • Session restore. The session is rebuilt from submission.json when eval-session.json is missing.

Comparing provided prompts

For levels where the candidate judges prompts someone else wrote:

  • Provided prompts: a level can provide a read-only Prompt A and/or Prompt B (assessment.promptA / promptB). The server always runs the provided text, whatever the request sends. History rows, logs and the submission report say which prompts were provided (promptAProvided, promptBProvided, version hashes).
  • Locked candidate prompt: assessment.lockCandidatePrompt keeps the candidate's own prompt as they submitted it at the previous level. It is still graded and no longer editable, and the page shows it in a collapsed read-only panel. A provided A never replaces it, so a candidate can't paste a provided prompt into their graded one.
  • Case-by-case comparison: after an A vs B run the page shows each prompt's score per label line, and every case's answers, runs right, flips and which prompt did better. It deliberately states no verdict, because deciding whether a gap is real is the candidate's work.
    • lib/compare-summary.js also computes a tally, a seeded paired-bootstrap range, an exact sign test and a verdict (better only when the range excludes zero and p < 0.05) for graders and the submission report.
    • With a custom check as the metric, the table shows what the check judged.
  • Notes per level: assessment.notes.key keeps each level's notes separately, so a later level never overwrites an earlier one's. The server merges them and accepts only the current level's key.
  • Judge failures: failed judge calls are left out of check calibration instead of counting as disagreement.

Tester feedback

  • Reference messages: the Reference panel shows every material as an expanded message card, with From/Sent as a header, plus a list of titles at the top that jumps to each card. Nothing is hidden behind a toggle, so a short, newer message can't be missed under a long one.
  • "How the custom check works": a new explainer says which model judges, what it is given and told, and what it answers. A test keeps it in line with CUSTOM_CHECK_SYSTEM_PROMPT.
  • Score table with 5 runs: the per-run score table no longer runs into the stability line, or under the other prompt's card in compare mode.

Restoring submitted work

Progressive assessments re-grade earlier levels' work as it is now. To make an accidental edit recoverable, much like restoring a coding submission:

  • Saved on Submit: lib/submitted-versions.js saves the scored fields (prompt, custom check criteria, notes) to .codesignal/submitted-versions.json each time the candidate submits. Own test cases are not saved.
  • Restore menus: the simulator shows a Restore a submitted … menu under each field, newest first, with Undo. GET /api/assessment/submitted-versions serves the list.
  • The submit hook goes in the task's hidden tests, not main.sh. This is unusual but deliberate. On CodeSignal, Submit runs the test runner in the live workspace with the hidden files readable, while Run executes main.sh with the hidden files moved away. A main.sh hook would therefore fire on every Run and never on Submit. The README and the module header document this.

Blind-review fixes (round 1)

  • Provided cases: they keep their flag, so submission.md no longer reports them as the candidate's own ("0 + 11").
  • Branding: assessment mode drops the course branding and uses an optional eyebrow line instead.
  • Level change: a new level starts with an empty Results panel.
  • Copy/paste: the flag now needs copied phrases to be at least half the text (was 40%). Quoting some memo lists alongside the candidate's own rules no longer zeroes the prompt.
  • Autosave no longer fails silently on big sessions. Saves carried the last results, with a prompt copy per case, so they broke Express's 100 KB default and later edits never reached submission.json.
    • In every mode, courses included, the server now stores results itself, so autosave sends only the editable work. If the page hasn't saved yet, the first evaluation starts the session from the request.
    • The body limit is 5 MB as a safety net.
    • A failed save shows a retrying notice, and the level switch waits for a successful save.

Fixes for all modes

  • Rejected temperature: the OpenAI provider retries without it. GPT-5 and GPT-6 accept only the default.
  • LiteLLM proxies: when a proxy rejects reasoning_effort, the provider adds allowed_openai_params and remembers that for each provider.
  • Reasoning effort: now configurable, none to max.
  • Failed runs: the page shows "All N runs failed: " instead of "not scored". Judge errors are counted, not dropped silently.

Release pack

  • What changed: npm run pack now also bundles the grading modules to their source paths under dist/lib/. That covers lib/grading.js, session-config.js, llm/provider.js, helpers.js, copy-detection.js, eval-compare.js, metrics/index.js, consistency.js and custom-check-calibration.js.
  • Why: hidden tests import these by path, so a task can pin a release instead of shipping the source tree.
  • How: the bundles use code splitting, so shared modules (and their state) exist once. eval-system-prompt.md sits beside them.
  • Checks: the pack verifies that each module loads and that a prompt grades end to end.

Testing

  • npm test: 419 tests pass (30 files), including new suites for config, metrics, consistency, store, view, grading, copy detection, the assessment API, comparison summaries and level changes.
  • npm run build and npm run pack both succeed, and the pack's health check passes.
  • Release with no node_modules: I extracted dist.tar.gz to a separate folder and loaded the modules the way the hidden grader does.
    • gradePrompt, gradeCustomCheck, loadCandidateWork, measureCopying and normalizeSessionConfig give the same results as the source tree.
    • One real gpt-6-luna call through the bundled provider returned a correct label.
  • Restore menus checked in headless Chrome: the menus list submissions, Restore saves the restored text, and Undo works. I also ran the submit hook inside a real hidden mocha run; it saved one version and skipped an identical resubmission.
  • Exercised on CodeSignal staging as a three-level progressive task. There, hidden tests re-run each submission through lib/grading.js behind the LLM proxy.

Notes for review

  • No hidden data in this repo. Tests use synthetic fixtures only. Task data, answer keys and hidden specs live with the task, not here.
  • README: the "Assessment mode" section documents the config.

An optional `assessment` block in session.config.json turns the simulator
into a graded, multi-level task; without it the courses behave as before.

- Reference materials, locked provided cases with include toggles, and
  candidate-added cases
- field-match and custom-check metrics, with custom-check calibration
  against reviewer-labelled samples
- Per-case and overall run consistency (unreadable outputs never agree)
- Notes panel, run-cost estimate, and server-enforced limits (runs, cases,
call budget, prompt/criteria/notes length) shown instead of truncating
- Copy/paste detection against the reference materials (4-word phrases)
- .codesignal/submission.json/.md and evaluations.jsonl for graders, and
lib/grading.js so hidden tests re-run work exactly as the simulator does
- Session restore from the submission and level-change polling

Also fixes for all modes: the OpenAI provider retries without a rejected
temperature, adds allowed_openai_params for LiteLLM proxies that reject
reasoning_effort, supports configurable reasoning effort, and failed
runs and judge errors are reported instead of showing "not scored".

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds assessment-mode configuration, case selection, custom-check calibration, consistency reporting, candidate-work persistence, and hidden grading helpers. It adds server endpoints and browser controls for these workflows. Evaluation supports additional metrics, larger run and case limits, and optional reasoning-effort settings. The release packer bundles the grading modules and checks them with a stub-provider grading run.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 27f9a

Assessment mode is mostly sound. Two small issues should be followed up. Overlapping saves can occasionally fail to write, or leave a stale Markdown submission file. Some LiteLLM proxy setups will also make an extra failed request and drop the temperature setting. Neither issue blocks normal use.

Hidden assessment tests import lib/grading.js and its helpers by path, but
`npm run pack` bundled the server into a single file, so a release had no
lib/ to import. Bundle those modules (with code splitting, so shared state
stays single) to the same paths under dist/lib, keep the eval system prompt
beside them, and have the pack check that each loads and a prompt grades.

…allow list.

- submission.md is written through a new writeTextFileAtomic helper (shared
with writeJsonFileAtomic), so overlapping writers never share a temp file.
- The OpenAI provider now sends the remembered allowed_openai_params that
the request actually uses, instead of always listing reasoning_effort. A
second parameter the proxy rejects is added to the allow list rather than
dropped, and dropping one parameter keeps the rest of the list.

Progressive assessments re-grade earlier levels' work as it is now, so an
accidental edit should be recoverable, like restoring a coding submission.

- lib/submitted-versions.js keeps the scored fields (prompt, custom check
  criteria, notes) in .codesignal/submitted-versions.json. A task's hidden
tests call recordSubmittedWork on Submit; identical resubmissions at the
  same level are not repeated.
- GET /api/assessment/submitted-versions lists them, and the simulator shows
a "Restore a submitted …" menu under each field, with Undo.
- The hook belongs in the hidden tests, not main.sh: Submit runs the test
runner with the hidden files readable, while Run executes main.sh. The
README and the module header say so.
- The release pack ships the module with the other grading modules.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Provided cases keep their flag through normalizeCases, so submission.md
and the history count them as provided, not as the candidate's own.
- No course branding in assessment mode: the mascot is hidden and an
optional `eyebrow` config line replaces "Cosmo · CodeSignal learning".
- A new level starts with an empty Results panel instead of the previous
  level's run.
- Copy/paste is flagged when copied phrases are at least half the text
(was 40%), so prompts that quote some memo lists alongside the
candidate's own rules are not zeroed.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The page saved the whole session, including the last results, which carry
a copy of the prompt for every case. Past Express's default 100 KB body
limit every save was rejected with only a console error, so later edits
(even a findings note) never reached submission.json.

- In assessment mode the server stores each evaluation's results itself,
and autosave sends only the editable work. Stored results survive saves
at the same level and are dropped when the level changes.
- The JSON body limit is 5 MB as a safety net.
- A failed save shows "Your latest changes are not saved yet. Retrying…"
and retries; the level switch waits until the last save succeeded.

Learners hit the same silent autosave failure with long prompts and many
cases. /api/eval/compare is the only place results come from, so the server
now stores them after every evaluation (starting the session from the
request if the page has not saved one yet), and the page's autosave never
sends them.

Hidden tests import lib/*.js by path. When the workspace's root
package.json has no "type" (as in one progressive level on staging), Node
printed a MODULE_TYPELESS_PACKAGE_JSON warning into the test output.
A lib/package.json with "type": "module" fixes the module type locally.

- A level can provide a read-only Prompt A and/or Prompt B
(assessment.promptA / promptB). The server always runs the provided
text, and history rows, logs and the submission report say which
  prompts were provided.
- assessment.lockCandidatePrompt keeps the candidate's own prompt as they
submitted it at the previous level: still graded, no longer editable.
The page shows it in a collapsed read-only panel.
- After a comparison the page shows A vs B per label line and a
case-by-case table, with no verdict: judging the difference is the
  candidate's job. lib/compare-summary.js also computes a tally, a seeded
bootstrap range, an exact sign test and a verdict for graders and the
  submission report.
- Notes can be kept per level (assessment.notes.key), so a later level's
notes never overwrite an earlier one's.
- The submission report no longer prints a copy/paste verdict, and judge
calls that fail are left out of check calibration instead of counting
  as disagreement.
- Layout fixes: Prompt A and B line up in compare mode, and inline status
text is centered next to its button.

…e custom check.

- The Reference panel shows its materials as stacked message cards, all
expanded, each under its title, with leading From/To/Sent lines as the
message header. With several messages, a list of titles at the top
jumps to each one. A tester missed a short second message that was
collapsed under a long first one.
- With 5 runs, the per-run score table outgrew its box: in a single-prompt
run it slid under the "Stability …" line next to it, and in a
comparison Prompt A's table ran under Prompt B's card. The table now
scrolls inside its own box, the stability line has its own row, and
tighter cells fit 5 runs without scrolling at common widths.
- A "How the custom check works" box, in the Custom check panel and under
the metric when it is chosen, says which model judges and, in plain
words, what the judge is told. A test keeps it in step with
  CUSTOM_CHECK_SYSTEM_PROMPT.
