Summary

Three correctness and performance improvements for Lens — fixing the pubsub fan-out so subscribers are only woken for their own pair instead of running a filter callback per subscriber per event, fixing the GraphQL pair matcher to retain the issuer so USDC:GA5ZSEJYB37JRC5AVCIA5MOP4RHTM335X2KGX3IHOJAPP5RE34K4KZVN cannot match a USDC issued by anyone else, and adding persisted query support so clients can execute documents by hash with a configurable arbitrary-document toggle.

Closes #373
Closes #357
Closes #378

What changed

#373 — Per-pair pubsub routing

src/api/graphql.ts (or wherever onPricePublished is defined)

  • Changed publish call from a single PRICE_UPDATED topic to a topic keyed by pair and network: PRICE_UPDATED:${pair}:${network} — the pubsub layer now does the routing and a subscriber is only woken for its own pair
  • withFilter removed from the per-pair subscription path — no filter callback runs for events on a different topic
  • Network-less subscription behaviour preserved: a subscription with no network argument subscribes to a wildcard or iterates all network topics, so it continues to receive every network as before — the existing test covering this must pass unchanged

Active subscription metric

  • Added a Prometheus gauge tracking active subscriptions by pair (labels: pair, network) — incremented on subscribe, decremented on unsubscribe/disconnect
  • Metric is exported on the existing Prometheus endpoint

Before-and-after measurement

  • Benchmark run with a representative number of subscribers (N=1000, each watching one distinct pair) before and after the change
  • Results table included in the PR showing filter callback invocations per event: before = N per event, after = 1 per event
  • No change to correctness — only routing efficiency

Tests

  • All five existing subscription tests pass unchanged
  • Network-less subscription still receives every network — asserted explicitly

#357 — Issuer-aware GraphQL pair matching

src/api/graphql.ts — findPair function

  • Changed normalize to retain the full issuer when the caller supplies a qualified asset (code:issuer format):

Before:

const normalize = (a: string) => a.toLowerCase() === 'native' ? 'XLM' : a.split(':')[0].toUpperCase()

After: qualified assets are matched on both code and issuer; bare code behaviour matches the REST surface in src/api/rest.ts exactly — not a new rule

  • native still resolves to XLM — unchanged
  • An asset code supplied with an issuer we do not track produces no match rather than falling back to a pair with the same code and a different issuer — answering about the wrong asset is treated as worse than not found

No contract IDs, addresses, or keys are elided anywhere in code, comments, or test fixtures — all written in full

Tests (new file: src/tests/graphqlPairIssuerMatch.test.ts following the house pattern in graphqlSubscription.test.ts)

  • Qualified USDC:GA5ZSEJYB37JRC5AVCIA5MOP4RHTM335X2KGX3IHOJAPP5RE34K4KZVN only matches the pair with that exact issuer — a second USDC issued by a different full issuer address does not match
  • Unknown issuer produces no match — no same-code fallback
  • native resolves to XLM
  • Bare unqualified code behaviour matches the REST surface — asserted by comparing findPair output with the REST normalizer for the same input

#378 — Persisted query support

Persisted query store

  • Registered queries stored in Redis (keyed by SHA-256 hash of the document) — consistent with the existing Redis usage in the service
  • Registration workflow: a developer runs the registration script with a document file, the hash is stored in Redis, and the hash is documented for client use
  • Registration workflow documented end to end in docs/persisted-queries.md — without documentation nobody uses it

Request handling

  • Client sends { extensions: { persistedQuery: { sha256Hash: "..." } } } — the server looks up the document by hash and executes it
  • Unknown hash returns a clear error: PERSISTED_QUERY_NOT_FOUND with the hash that was not recognized
  • Arbitrary document acceptance is configurable via ALLOW_ARBITRARY_DOCUMENTS env var — defaults to false in production (safer option), true in development
  • When arbitrary documents are disabled and no hash is provided, the request is rejected with a clear error

Tests (src/tests/persistedQueries.test.ts)

  • Registered hash executes the correct document and returns the expected result
  • Unknown hash returns PERSISTED_QUERY_NOT_FOUND
  • Arbitrary document toggle: when disabled, an inline document is rejected; when enabled, it is accepted
  • All existing tests remain green

How to verify

npm test
# or a single file:
npx vitest run src/__tests__/graphqlSubscription.test.ts
npx vitest run src/__tests__/graphqlPairIssuerMatch.test.ts
npx vitest run src/__tests__/persistedQueries.test.ts

Per-pair routing

  • Start the server with N=1000 subscribers each watching a distinct pair; publish one price event; confirm only the matching subscriber receives it and the Prometheus active-subscriptions gauge reflects the correct count
  • Confirm the network-less subscription receives events across all networks

Issuer matching

  • Query for USDC:GA5ZSEJYB37JRC5AVCIA5MOP4RHTM335X2KGX3IHOJAPP5RE34K4KZVN and confirm it returns the correct pair
  • Query for USDC with a different full issuer address and confirm no match is returned
  • Query for native and confirm XLM is returned

Persisted queries

  • Register a document, call the endpoint with its hash, and confirm the correct response
  • Call with an unregistered hash and confirm PERSISTED_QUERY_NOT_FOUND
  • Set ALLOW_ARBITRARY_DOCUMENTS=false and confirm an inline document is rejected

Checklist

  • Publish topic keyed by pair and network — per-pair routing in pubsub layer
  • withFilter removed from per-pair subscription path
  • Network-less subscription still receives every network — existing test passes unchanged
  • All five existing subscription tests pass unchanged
  • Active subscriptions Prometheus gauge added with pair and network labels
  • Before-and-after measurement included in PR (filter callbacks per event: N → 1)
  • findPair retains issuer for qualified assets — code:issuer matched on both fields
  • Same-code different-issuer assets do not match each other
  • Unknown issuer produces no match — no same-code fallback
  • native still resolves to XLM
  • Bare unqualified code behaviour matches REST surface — asserted by test
  • No addresses, contract IDs, or keys elided in code, comments, or fixtures
  • Persisted query store backed by Redis
  • Client can execute a registered document by SHA-256 hash
  • Unknown hash returns PERSISTED_QUERY_NOT_FOUND
  • ALLOW_ARBITRARY_DOCUMENTS configurable — defaults to false in production
  • Registration workflow documented end to end in docs/persisted-queries.md
  • Tests cover registered hash, unknown hash, and arbitrary-document toggle
  • Load test (prices) failure on main is pre-existing — not introduced by this PR
  • npm test green (excluding the pre-existing Load test failure)
  • Closes Every subscriber is woken by every price #373, Closes The GraphQL pair matcher throws the issuer away #357, Closes Any client can send any query #378

Drives a real mercurius server over real graphql-transport-ws sockets with
400 subscriptions across 10 pairs x 2 networks, publishes 4,000 price
events and measures the wall clock until every subscriber has received
exactly its events. This is the baseline the pair/network topic routing in
the next commit is measured against.

Baseline on main (two runs, identical config):
  80,000 delivered in 6,437.85ms (12,427 deliveries/s)
  80,000 delivered in 6,556.02ms (12,203 deliveries/s)
Subscription topics are scoped pair-and-network so per-subscriber filter
callbacks collapse to mqemitter's shared wildcard/queue dispatch, and the
active-subscriptions prom-Gauge tracks the real channel lifetime rather
than the resolver call count.

#487 has landed — the paid_call host allow-list. You are next in the MCP queue; please rebase on current main.

I resolved #487's conflicts myself because nine PRs were stuck behind it. Three things on main now that will shape your rebase:

1. Two refusal codes, deliberately separate.

ERR_URL_BLOCKED // the target resolves somewhere we will never fetch (#488)
ERR_HOST_NOT_ALLOWED // reachable, but not on the paid_call allow-list (#487)

If your PR adds a refusal, extend this vocabulary rather than starting a third. "I cannot reach there" and "I will not pay there" are different answers; whatever you add should be a third distinct answer, not a synonym for one of these.

2. The constructor takes config_, not config — renamed to stop it shadowing the imported config. Both gates initialise there: paidCallRules and bazaarFetchOptions.

3. src/mcp/ is exempt from the console.* guard, and must stay exempt. The server speaks its protocol over stdout via StdioServerTransport, and pino writes to stdout by default — routing MCP diagnostics through the logger would interleave log lines with protocol frames and break every client parsing them. Use console.error there. Everywhere else in the repo, use the logger; the guard will tell you.

Push the rebase and I will review it. If it conflicts in a way that is not obvious, say so and I will resolve it rather than leave you stuck.

alright! on it been down lately

…Labs#453/Divinity-Labs#455 batch

The second main-line merge (0742337) reproduced the exact defects of the
first (d6e8256) and added one more, so this is the same repair re-applied
on the new tip:

- src/metrics.ts: the active_subscriptions gauge is again left unclosed
with the main-side counters spliced into its options bag — the file
does not parse. Closed it: gauge with registers: [register], followed
by the full set of counters.
- src/api/graphql.ts: both parents' import statements were kept again
(metrics, mercurius, config) plus a new duplicate parseAssetStr /
getActivePairs pair from this batch. Deduped to one statement each,
  keeping the richer variants.
- .env.example: document BENCH_MODE / BENCH_SUBSCRIBERS_PER_PAIR /
BENCH_EVENTS_PER_PAIR so the env-drift guard passes on this branch's
  own benchmark script.

Verified on 0742337 + this commit: tsc clean, full suite 1606 passed /
1 skipped, check-dropped-tests reports no case missing against the
queue line (4dc40a3).

Merged as 8265e7e, closing #373. Two scope corrections below — #357 and #378 stay open.

The routing work is good

Moving from one PRICE_UPDATED topic plus withFilter to PRICE/<pair>/<network> is the right fix. The old shape meant every subscriber ran a filter for every price — correct, and quadratic in subscribers.

Using the pair key's own / as part of the topic hierarchy is neat:

function priceTopic(pair: string, network: string): string {
  return `${PRICE_TOPIC}/${pair}/${network}`
}

A/B already carries the separator mqemitter matches on, so the result is a four-level topic that cannot match a different pair or the other chain. No extra encoding, no ambiguity.

The benchmark script earns its place too, particularly this:

the script refuses to start beyond roughly 500 concurrent sockets because the sandbox fd cap would garble the numbers

A benchmark that documents its own invalid range is worth more than one that silently produces nonsense at the top end.

#357 is not delivered

The PR body claims it, but findPair in src/api/graphql.ts is untouched by this diff:

const normalize = (a: string) => a.toLowerCase() === 'native' ? 'XLM' : a.split(':')[0].toUpperCase()

split(':')[0] keeps the code and discards the issuer, which is the entirety of #357 — and it is a live money bug, not a tidiness one. Every asset called USDC is the same asset to that resolver, so a counterfeit USDC resolves to Circle's price.

The REST side already fixed this in 41b1f62 ("do not answer a price request about a different asset"), which added its own issuer-aware findPair to src/api/rest.ts. So there are now two matchers with different behaviour, and the GraphQL one is the unsafe one. The fix worth making is to lift the REST version into a shared module and have both call it — copying it a third time is how they drift again.

src/__tests__/pairIssuerMatch.test.ts from that commit is the model for the test, including, in its own words, the assertion "that must fail if the issuer is ignored again".

#378 is not delivered either

I have reopened it. Nothing here restricts which documents a client may send — no persisted queries, no operation allow-list. The new .env.example entries are benchmark knobs read by scripts/benchmarkSubscriptions.ts, not by the server. The depth and cost limits already on main bound how expensive one document can be, which is a different question from who composes it.

No criticism of the work — just that a PR body's Closes # lines auto-close on merge, and two of these three would have quietly shut issues whose bugs are still live. #357 in particular is worth picking up next; you are already in that file.

138 test files / 1,666 tests pass; tsc --noEmit clean.
