Fix propagation of timeout - not sure if it was actually causing too much of an issue by the way it was used in our code, but potentially it meant things didn't wait for as long as asked for. We usually called waitForBytes with nbytes==1 so there were not multiple wakeups that might lead to a miscalculation of overall timeout.
