Closes #995
Closes #996

Cause

Every engine setting command (commands/player/sound.rs: normalize, DSD precision, DoP, ReplayGain and its options and mode, mono, balance, stereo width, smart / dynamic crossfade, AutoMix, visualizer, speed, gapless, crossfade) leased the pool with require_profile_pool(), with no profile in mind. A switch landing between the click and the command wrote the old profile's choice into the new one, and the engine step that followed overwrote the values switch_profile had just restored for it.
  • fix(settings): sérialiser les écritures de useProfileScopedToggle #995. useProfileScopedToggle fired each write without waiting for the one before it, so two fast clicks could reach the backend out of order and leave the first value saved and applied.

Fix

  • save_then_apply (commands/player/settings.rs) is the one path for these commands. It takes an optional expected_profile_id and leases through state::lease_profile, the same check require_profile_pool_for makes under the lock a switch takes. A changed profile fails with ProfileChanged before anything is saved or applied. The rows are saved, the lease released, and the engine is touched only while the profile they went into is still active, under the profile read lock (state::while_profile_is), so a command that lost the race to a switch never overwrites the next profile's restore. None keeps the old contract: whatever is active, and with no profile at all the value is applied unsaved.
  • The twins in output.rs, match-source-rate and pause-on-device-loss, take the id too and keep their "profile required" contract; keep-awake now uses the same while_profile_is.
  • Every frontend caller passes the id it captured: the Settings handlers, the settings reset (inProfile), the stereo-image card and the speed control. The Settings handlers that rolled back unconditionally now check that the profile is still theirs first: a refused write now fails where it used to land in the wrong profile, and its rollback must not paint over the next profile's value.
  • useProfileScopedToggle chains its writes: one at a time; a queued write a later click superseded is skipped, so the last click wins in the database and in the engine; a write whose profile is no longer active is not sent; a failure that is still the last decision rolls back to the value the backend last confirmed. Saved first, then applied, as before.

Not covered, still on whatever profile is active: exclusive output and output device (applied by a blocking device rebuild), EQ, volume.

Verification

  • typecheck, lint, cargo fmt --check, clippy -D warnings.
  • New commands/player/setting_write_tests.rs (5 tests, AutoMix's command body on a migrated profile database): lands in its profile; refused after a switch with nothing written in either profile and the engine untouched; refused once the profile is closed; applied unsaved with no profile; the engine step skipped after a switch that follows the save. App crate tests run on Linux.
  • Sandbox via CDP: two rapid clicks on an engine toggle leave the last value in profile_setting and in the engine; a toggle whose profile was left is refused and nothing lands in the profile switched to.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Corrections

… for

Every engine setting command leased whatever profile was active, so a
switch landing between the click and the command saved the old
profile's choice into the new one, and the engine step that followed
overwrote the values the switch had just restored.

The commands now take an optional expected profile id and go through a
shared save_then_apply, which leases under the lock a switch takes,
refuses with ProfileChanged when the profile changed, saves, then applies
only while the profile the rows went into is still active. Without an id
they keep
their old contract. Match source rate and pause on device loss follow
the same rule; every frontend caller passes the id it captured, and the
Settings rollbacks check the profile is still theirs.

Refs #996
The hook fired each write without waiting for the one before it, so two
fast clicks could reach the backend out of order and leave the first
value saved and applied. Writes now go one at a time: a queued write a
later click superseded is skipped, a write whose profile is no longer
active is not sent and the rest name their profile to the command, and a
failure that is still the last decision rolls back to the value the
backend last confirmed.

Refs #995
…or what it checks

The speed command saved the clamped value but sent the raw one to the
engine, which clamps on its own; it now sends what it saved. The last
setting write test checks the guard around the engine step, and is
named for that.

Walkthrough

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validation, enregistrement et application des réglages
src-tauri/crates/app/src/state.rs, src-tauri/crates/app/src/commands/player/*
src/lib/tauri/player.ts, src/lib/tauri/smartCrossfade.ts, src/lib/tauri/visualizer.ts, src/components/views/SettingsView.tsx, src/components/views/settings/StereoImageCard.tsx, src/components/views/settings/settingsReset.ts, src/contexts/PlayerContext.tsx
src/hooks/useProfileScopedToggle.ts, docs/architecture/invariants.md

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Possibly related issues

Merge Risk: Low · up to 6b746

A rapid A-to-B-to-A switch can briefly expose stale toggle state and permit an outdated queued write; fix activation tracking before merge. Add the requested backend regression test as follow-up coverage.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 6b746

The changes strengthen separation between local profiles without identifying new privileges or broader access. Remaining uncertainty concerns overlapping or interrupted setting changes and whether saved values always match the audio engine after a profile switch.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Within the traced path, a caller already able to invoke setting IPC can affect the active profile's setting rows and process-wide audio or playback-power state. Supplying another profile ID does not open that profile's database: the ID must match the active slot. Broader application entrypoints are outside this assessment's source coverage.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The backend, rather than the frontend's preliminary check, enforces expected-profile matching under the lock used for profile replacement. The null compatibility path retains the previous active-profile authority and must not be treated as authentication or tenant isolation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Switches serialize with one another and drain old-profile leases before closing their pool, subject to the existing drain timeout. The inspected setting tests cover ordinary writes, stale or closed-profile rejection, no-profile compatibility, and the application predicate separately; they do not demonstrate the complete concurrent save/switch/restore transition.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Thanks for the three outside-diff notes.

  • SettingsView.tsx, layout effect: applied in 6b7462d. activeProfileIdRef is now synced from a useLayoutEffect, so a write callback that resolves between the commit and the passive effects already compares against the profile on screen.
  • useProfileScopedToggle.ts, reset on profile change: not applied. The stale A state can only make the switch look hydrated if the user goes A to B to A before profile B's read, a single local IPC call, has answered: a switch rebuilds the profile pool and the UI, so that window is not reachable by hand. Once B's answer lands the state is tagged with B, and A reads as not hydrated until its own read comes back. Resetting the state inside the effect would also bring back the set-state-in-effect pattern the hook avoids on purpose (it gates on the profile id instead, as useArtistImage does).
  • setting_write_tests.rs, switch mid-write: not applied. The two halves of that path are pinned separately: the lease check (a_toggle_for_a_profile_since_left_is_refused) and the guard around the engine step after the save (the_engine_step_runs_only_for_the_active_profile). A barrier between the lease and the SQL write would need a test hook inside save_then_apply, production code that exists only for the test.

src/hooks/useProfileScopedToggle.ts:130-162
Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

These two repeat the outside-diff notes from the previous pass, which I declined with reasons there; keeping both as they are.

  • useProfileScopedToggle.ts, activation id: the one new case, a write queued in A that is sent after an A to B to A round trip, writes the value the user clicked in A into A, which is still the profile it was made for, and the backend accepts it only because A is active again. Nothing reaches B. The round trip itself has to happen inside one queued write or one read, and a profile switch rebuilds the pool and the whole UI in between, so an activation counter would add state to all four controls for a window that cannot be reached by hand.
  • setting_write_tests.rs, barrier inside save_then_apply: as acknowledged above, both guards are pinned by their own tests, and a barrier between the lease and persist_setting would need a hook in production code.

@InstaZDLL Compris.

Learning: In `src/hooks/useScrollLongTitles.ts`, queued writes from `setEnabled` must be guarded against active profile changes. Capture `activeProfileIdRef.current` when dispatching, and when the `writeChainRef` task runs, abort before calling `setProfileSetting` or updating `confirmedEnabledRef` if the active profile has changed, so a toggle issued for one profile cannot persist onto another after a profile switch.

Learning: In WaveFlow, `set_profile_setting` has a profile-switch TOCTOU risk because the frontend profile guard runs before the asynchronous backend call obtains the profile pool. A complete fix requires the backend command to validate an expected profile ID while it resolves the pool under the same lock. This is tracked in GitHub issue #485.

Learning: In `src/hooks/useScrollLongTitles.ts`, serializing writes is not sufficient on its own: when `setEnabled` performs an async `setProfileSetting`, it must re-check the captured active profile after the await and again before applying success or error side effects. This prevents `confirmedEnabledRef` updates, rollback, or event dispatch from leaking onto a newly active profile if the user switches profiles mid-write.

## Cross-cutting rules (always apply)

- **Profile-scoped pool** — `state.require_profile_pool().await?` for anything touching user data; it's a _leased_ `ProfilePool`, so query with `&*pool`, keep the handle bound, and never re-resolve it mid-batch; pool + profile id together come from `require_profile_snapshot()`, never two calls. Learning: In `src-tauri/crates/app/src/state.rs`, `ProfilePool` carries a lease. `AppState::activate_profile` swaps the active profile epoch and waits for leases from the previous epoch to drain before its caller continues. A profile-specific operation can use `AppState::require_profile_pool_for(Some(profile_id))` to prevent work for a superseded profile.
