fix(standalone): hand the setup token over only where nothing else can take it - #414
Follow-up to #410 (issue #397), from a security review of the pushed branch that landed after #410 was merged.
What was wrong
The first copy in laptop mode opened http://127.0.0.1:<port>/login#setup-token=<token> everywhere. Two ways something other than the owner could take that token:
The command line. The URL is an argument of the opener (xdg-open, open, rundll32) and often of the browser it starts, for as long as that browser runs. Linux shows every process's arguments in /proc/<pid>/cmdline (unless hidepid), and the BSDs through ps, to every account — while <data>/setup-token is mode 0600. Windows needs rights over the process to read its command line, macOS needs root.
The address opened is not always the listener's. Bound to 0.0.0.0 or [::], the server opens the loopback address. Windows and the BSDs let another program bind 127.0.0.1 on the same port, more specifically, and take the browser's connection; a page there reads the fragment.
The change
laptop::browser::may_hand_over(listening, command_lines_private): the token rides along only where COMMAND_LINES_ARE_PRIVATE (Windows, macOS) and the listener is not a wildcard. Elsewhere the browser opens the bare address and the token is read from its file, as before feat(standalone): open the browser on start, with the setup token in the fragment #397. The second copy is unchanged (bare address always).
The comment on browser::open claimed the plan accepted the command-line exposure; it never did, and is corrected.
Operations guide, plan §5 / §8 step 3 / status line, and the CHANGELOG line say where the hand-over happens.
Tests
Unit: the_token_is_handed_over_only_where_nothing_else_can_take_it (loopback and LAN addresses hand over; 0.0.0.0 and [::] don't; nothing when command lines are not private). Inverted both conditions separately: each inversion fails it on its own line; restored.
tests/cli/laptop.rs: the fake opener now expects the bare address on the first start on Linux (the fragment on macOS). This is the check that main honours may_hand_over; it runs on the Linux CI runner only — the Windows runner turns the opening off.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 8e895
Windows handover can still expose the setup token to authorized process-log readers, although the guide documents a workaround. Minor documentation corrections also remain, so merge readiness is moderate.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 8e895
The change narrows token exposure without changing setup authorization. No introduced or worsened security concern was established. Assurance remains limited by host-specific command-line protections and logging, which can still expose tokens on permitted configurations.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The credential authorizes creation of the first administrator for the server instance until setup succeeds. An attacker possessing it must also reach that server: the documented default is local loopback, while an explicit LAN listener exposes the setup endpoint to reachable network clients.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A residual, pre-existing attack path remains on permitted hosts that record process command lines: a reader of those logs could recover the token and race the owner to first-admin setup if the server is reachable. The base already passed the token through the same opener path, so this PR does not introduce or widen that exposure. The guide documents disabling automatic opening before first start as a mitigation.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new gate withholds the credential on platforms classified as exposing process arguments and on wildcard listeners whose browser destination is loopback. The separate second-copy path still exits before initialization and opens only a bare URL, because a health response does not authenticate the process holding the port.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Unit tests exercise both privacy and listener-address conditions. CLI tests capture Unix opener arguments and check the token-free second launch, but disable browser opening on Windows. These tests support policy wiring, not independent verification of operating-system privacy or host logging controls.

Addressed the outside-diff remark on docs/guides/operations.md in 0a09ad6: the guide now lists both outcomes while setup is open (token handed over in the fragment, or bare address and the token typed in from the file or WAVEFLOW_SETUP_TOKEN). Documentation only; no test.

…n take it
The URL the browser opens is on the opener's command line, and often on the
browser's for as long as it runs. Windows and macOS keep a process's
arguments from other accounts; Linux and the BSDs show them to anyone, while
the setup-token file is mode 0600. And the browser opens the loopback
address, which a server listening on 0.0.0.0 or [::] does not own: Windows
and the BSDs let another program bind 127.0.0.1 on the same port, more
specifically, and take the connection.
The first copy now puts the token in the fragment only on Windows and macOS,
and only when it listens on the address it opens; elsewhere it opens the
bare address and the token is read from its file, as before #397.
Signed-off-by: InstaZDLL <github.105mh@8shield.net>
The bare address is also what a BSD opens, and a wildcard listener on Windows
or macOS opens it too, so the guide, the plan's status and the changelog now
say so. A token an operator set is in WAVEFLOW_SETUP_TOKEN, not in a file: the
module doc and the plan no longer call the file the source in that case.
