Closes#403. The design is RFC-027, whose four decisions the owner validated on 2026-11-02.
What it does
An account can say once what an app that does not ask should get: a default, and one row per Subsonic client name (c). Set in Settings › Playback or through /api/v2/transcoding-profiles, and applied by one DomainServices::stream_profile that the bearer stream route and Subsonic stream both call. Each surface decides only whether the request was silent.
A profile fills a silence and nothing else. A request naming a format (raw and one this server cannot produce included) or a positive maxBitRate / bitrate is answered as if no profile existed. maxBitRate=0 and an empty format= count as silence, as the façade already read them.
A ceiling, like maxBitRate. A source at or under the profile's bit rate stays the original; one of unknown bit rate is encoded.
Never applied to stream tickets (so the web player keeps originals), downloads, or public shares.
Set by the account alone. An explicit request always wins, so an administrator's profile could never be a cap.
Past the ceilings: 429, with no fallback to the original, as the native guide already tells clients.
Please look at
The limit the owner accepted. The reason tickets are exempt also reaches a client that does not ask and seeks by byte range: until the encode is whole in the cache, a range past the first byte is 416, so its seek may fail where it worked on the original. It is kept because only an account that set a profile is concerned, and a row of raw for that client puts it right. The RFC, the Settings block and docs/compatibility/subsonic-compatibility.md all say so.
No real client has been run against this, so none of those documents names who is concerned; the compatibility document asks the next campaign to find out.
A change to /rest behaviour, on a frozen contract: for an account that set a profile, a silent stream may now be transcoded. Nothing changes on the wire shape, or for an account with no profile.
How it was checked
cargo test -j 2 --all-features: all green but laptop::a_double_clicked_server…, which failed here only because my CARGO_TARGET_DIR was spelled with /; it passes under a native path, and it is left to CI.
Thirty mutations, each removing one fix, and each making its named test fail: the two frozen-contract tests (an_explicit_format_or_cap_beats_a_profile, an_explicit_request_beats_a_profile) and the two no-profile tests among them, plus the ceiling, tickets, downloads, the 429, tenancy, scopes and the row limit. Files restored and compared byte for byte afterwards.
migrations: the new table on a database at each released schema, empty and writable.
Clippy, rustdoc, check-rust-layout.sh, check-webapp-layout.sh, biome, the three tsconfigs and Vitest pass locally.
The block driven in a real browser against a real server on a scratch database: a save persists across a reload, and there is no horizontal overflow at phone width.
Playwright was not run locally: the new spec, webapp/e2e/transcoding-profiles.spec.ts, has its first verdict in this PR's CI.
The seven added languages' strings are mine and await the native read #406 tracks.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to cebe3
No blocking issue was established. The change is mergeable after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to cebe3
The new preferences remain scoped to the authenticated account, and automatic transcoding retains existing media authorization and concurrency limits. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Delayed browser responses during account changes remain an assurance gap.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — An authenticated caller can alter its own default and client profiles, changing eligible streams for that account. Resulting encodes consume shared server capacity, but retain the existing global and per-account admission controls. No broader account-selection authority was established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Management handlers derive account identity from authentication, not request fields. Both streaming surfaces authorize the requested media before profile resolution. The caller-controlled Subsonic client name selects only within that authenticated account's profile rows.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Profile-selected encodes inherit existing failure-containment behavior: live-stream consumer departure kills the encoder and removes staging output; cache fills have deadlines and publish completed files by rename. Permit, pending-fill and lock guards support resource release and retry. The encoder implementation is unchanged by this PR.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Close the browser-isolation assurance gap with a delayed profile-read scenario spanning sign-out and another account's sign-in. If cache removal does not reliably discard old completions, reject results from the previous session generation. This is a verification proposal, not an established cross-account disclosure.

Explanation
Issue directe #403.

Two findings outside the diff in the last review. Bit rate after removing the default: fixed in 1c814c9, tested by the end of sets the account's default and takes it away again in webapp/e2e/transcoding-profiles.spec.ts. Hiding the forms after a failed re-read: not done, on purpose.DefaultProfile and ClientProfiles hold their own state, so unmounting them on a transient refetch failure would throw away what is being typed and the Saved message, and nothing read from a stale row reaches a write except the row's own form, whose failure is shown. The administration's transcoding panel keeps its last reading after a failed poll for the same reason (webapp/src/pages/settings/admin-page/activity.tsx). A first read that fails still shows the error instead of a form, tested by says when a profile cannot be read.
