fix(sdk): window.op keeps working when compiled to window.op.call - #645
window.op keeps working in apps built with Next.js Turbopack, where window.op?.(...) compiles to window.op.call(...). Every helper in @openpanel/nextjs and @openpanel/astro makes that call. Thanks to @kings0x, whose #506 traced the cause and whose tests are ported here.
Fixed
Tracking no longer throws _window_op.call is not a function once the script has loaded: the window.op Proxy falls back to its function target for anything the SDK does not define.
Events sent through call, apply or bind before the script loads are no longer lost: the init snippet returns the native functions instead of queueing ['call', ...], which the SDK dropped on replay.
The script tag shown during onboarding carries the same snippet.
Upgrade notes
Sites that pasted the snippet by hand keep the old pre-load behaviour until they paste the new one. The docs pages still show the old snippet and need their own change, since marketing site changes stay out of product PRs.
Internal
Tests run the real tracker.ts against the real snippet in tracker.test.ts, on bun test rather than the vitest setup in fix(web): preserve callable function properties #506. This keeps tracker.ts as it is, with no callable.ts extraction.
The testbed gets a script tag page that loads tracker.ts from source, because its /op1.js is the last released build, plus a spec that reads the stored events from ClickHouse.
next dev --turbopack on Next.js 15.5.7, compiled output _window_op.call(_window, 'track', name). Released op1.js and snippet: _window_op.call is not a function, nothing sent. This branch's build (with the version inlined, as a release does): no errors, and calls from before and after load both sent.
Testbed spec in Chromium: fails on unfixed code with window.op.call is not a function. With the fix, all four events are stored with path /script-tag.html and their properties.
bun test in packages/sdks/web (10 pass), apps/start vitest (86 pass), bun run typecheck (23/23), ultracite on the changed files.
Fixed an issue where the browser initialization snippet did not correctly support invoking tracking methods with call, apply, or bind. These invocation styles now work both before and after the SDK loads, while calls made before loading continue to be queued for processing afterward.
Next.js with Turbopack compiles window.op?.('track', ...) to
_window_op.call(...), which every helper in @openpanel/nextjs and
@openpanel/astro goes through. Once op1.js had loaded, the window.op Proxy
only read from the SDK instance, so call was undefined and tracking threw
"_window_op.call is not a function". Before it had loaded, the snippet's
Proxy queued ['call', ...], which the SDK dropped on replay, so the event
was lost without an error.
The loaded Proxy now falls back to its function target, and the snippet
returns the native call, apply and bind. The onboarding script tag carries
the same snippet. Sites that pasted the snippet by hand need the new one to
keep events sent before the script loads.
Closes#240
Co-authored-by: Kingsley <agukingsley450@gmail.com>
The SDK initialization snippet and tracker proxy now expose native call, apply, and bind properties. Unit and end-to-end tests check invocation before and after tracker loading.
Changes: Callable proxy behavior
Layer / File(s)
Summary
SDK proxy behavior and validation packages/sdks/web/src/init-snippet.ts, packages/sdks/web/src/tracker.ts, packages/sdks/web/src/tracker.test.ts
The initialization snippet and tracker proxy return native function properties for call, apply, and bind. Unit tests cover queued and post-load invocation styles.
Script-tag integration and browser validation apps/start/src/components/onboarding/install-snippets.ts, apps/testbed/script-tag.html, apps/testbed/src/script-tag.ts, apps/testbed/e2e/sdk.spec.ts
The generated script-tag stub forwards native function properties. The testbed exercises call and apply before and after tracker loading, then checks stored events and their properties.
The callable proxy fix has a bounded edge case: bindings created before SDK loading silently lose later events. Address this or explicitly accept it before release; the post-load script-tag fix also requires the normal SDK release.

Explanation
The title names the actual change: window.op should keep working when compiled to window.op.call. The changeset makes the init snippet return native call, apply, and bind, and makes the tracker proxy fall back to function target properties. The title is specific and matches the main fix, though it does not mention apply or bind.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Requirements from #240: (1) fix _window_op.call is not a function for calls to window.op in Next.js apps; (2) keep user identification via useOpenPanel working from a useEffect after the session is available, alongside page-view tracking. Both are coding requirements.
Requirement 1 [#240]: The tracker.ts Proxy get trap now returns Reflect.get(target, prop) when the OpenPanel property is undefined. The function target supplies call, apply and bind, so window.op.call(...) no longer throws after load. The init snippet in init-snippet.ts returns target[prop] for call, apply and bind before load. Calls made through these functions are no longer queued as ['call', ...], which the SDK dropped on replay. The testbed spec (apps/testbed/e2e/sdk.spec.ts) covers this path for tracking calls, and tracker.test.ts covers the snippet and the post-load invocation styles.
Requirement 2 [#240]: identify is a defined SDK method. The Proxy returns it as a bound function, and the snippet queues it before load. The shared fix covers the same window.op access path the identify helper uses. The PR does not add an identify-specific test, and I did not inspect the @openpanel/nextjsuseOpenPanel source because the paths I tried were absent at the reviewed head. The result relies on the PR description and the generic proxy behavior.
All other objectives in the issue are not present. The issue reports no broader outage or data loss.

Regenerate op1.js before relying on post-load window.op.call.
The stub change affects only calls made before the script loads. The committed apps/public/public/op1.js lacks the Reflect.get fallback added to packages/sdks/web/src/tracker.ts. After that file loads, window.op.call is undefined and throws. The fix reaches users only after the SDKs release regenerates op1.js.

Forward calls from pre-load stubs after the SDK loads.
A bound reference created before load, such as window.op.bind(window, 'track'), keeps pushing into the stub queue. tracker.ts drains that queue once at load, then replaces window.op. Calls through the stale reference after load are silently dropped. Forward later queue pushes to the loaded SDK, for example by overriding queue.push in tracker.ts after the drain loop, and add a test that calls the bound function after load.

Valid, but out of scope for this PR. Any reference taken before load already behaves this way: const track = window.op.track or const op = window.op keeps writing to the drained queue. Compiled window.op?.() reads window.op on every call, so it never holds one, which is the case this PR fixes. Forwarding late pushes would change how the queue works for all of those references, so it should be its own change. Leaving this open.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@lindesvard Agreed. Retained pre-load references are a separate queue-lifecycle issue, not the compiled-call case this PR fixes. Forwarding late queue pushes belongs in a separate change. This finding can stay open as a follow-up.
Would you like me to open a GitHub issue for that change?
On the follow-up to regenerate op1.js: not in this PR. apps/public/public/op1.js is the build the SDK release workflow commits, so it changes when the SDK is next released, not by hand here. Until then the updated snippet works with the current op1.js: it only changes what happens before the script loads.
