fix(dashboard): hide sign-up when registration is closed - #646
Stops offering sign-up to visitors the API would refuse. With ALLOW_REGISTRATION=false the login page linked to sign-up and /onboarding showed a form that could only fail.
Changed
/login hides "Create an account" when a sign-up would be refused. The Google and GitHub buttons and the email sign-in stay.
Signed-out visitors to /onboarding are redirected to /login when a sign-up would be refused, keeping any inviteId so an existing user can still accept the invite by signing in.
An expired, revoked or already used invite link now lands on /login without a sign-up link whenever ALLOW_REGISTRATION is set, true included, because the API refuses sign-ups with that invite. With ALLOW_REGISTRATION unset nothing changes.
With ALLOW_INVITATION=false and ALLOW_REGISTRATION=false, invite links land on /login too.
Still working as before
The first user on a fresh install sees the link and the form, whatever ALLOW_REGISTRATION says.
A live invite reaches the sign-up form with registration closed.
A signed-in user opening an invite link goes to the accept page.
Internal
New public query auth.registrationAllowed, taking an optional inviteId and using the same check the API applies at sign-up. A mangled inviteId, overlong or holding a NUL character, gets a "no" instead of an error page on /login.
The first-user check asks whether any user exists rather than counting them all.
Unit tests for the query, and apps/start/e2e/auth-registration.spec.ts. The closed half of that spec runs only when ALLOW_REGISTRATION=false is set for both the api and the test run.
With ALLOW_REGISTRATION=false the login page still linked to sign-up and
/onboarding still showed the form, which the API then refused. A new public
query, auth.registrationAllowed, answers with the rule the API enforces on
sign-up, so the link is hidden and /onboarding redirects to /login whenever
that sign-up would be refused.
The first user on a fresh install and a visitor with a live invite still get
the form. A redirected invite keeps its id on /login, so an existing user can
accept it by signing in. Social sign-in stays on /login.
Self-hosted installs need no changes: no new environment variables or
migrations.
The auth API now reports registration eligibility for an optional invite ID. The login page uses that result to control the account-creation link. Signed-out users who cannot register are redirected from onboarding to login, with the invite ID preserved.

The auth router adds a validated registrationAllowed query. The policy checks for an existing user and rejects invite IDs containing a NUL character. Tests cover registration settings, first-user access, invite validity, and malformed invite IDs.

The login page shows the account-creation link only when registration is allowed. Onboarding redirects signed-out users when registration is unavailable and preserves the invite ID. End-to-end tests cover open and closed registration.

Explanation
The title "fix(dashboard): hide sign-up when registration is closed" matches the main change in the changeset. The login route now renders the account-creation link only when registration is allowed. The onboarding route redirects signed-out visitors to login when registration is refused. The backend adds a registrationAllowed query and registration checks that support this behavior. The title names the primary user-facing change. The scope tag "dashboard" is slightly narrow because the change also adds backend query and validation logic in packages/core, but this does not make the title misleading.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #495 requires the UI to stop offering sign-up when the API rejects registration. The login route queries auth.registrationAllowed and renders Create an account only when that query returns true. The onboarding route uses the same eligibility check and redirects rejected signed-out requests to /login while preserving inviteId. The registration query delegates to getIsRegistrationAllowed, and unit and E2E tests cover closed registration, first-user access, invite access, and retained sign-in options.

Explanation
The invite-aware registration query, malformed-invite handling, first-user lookup, onboarding redirect, and related tests support the registration-eligibility objective in issue #495. The reviewed changes show no demonstrated unrelated feature.

Assert that the login heading renders in the invite redirect test.
The invite test checks only the redirect URL and the absence of the "Create an account" link. A blank page or error boundary at /login?inviteId=... passes both checks. Add a Welcome back heading assertion so the test confirms the invite destination renders. The direct login test covers the same page without inviteId.

Add a visible “Welcome back” heading assertion to the unknown-invite redirect
test after the URL check, using the heading locator. Keep the existing assertion
that the “Create an account” link is absent.

Review comments at @packages/core/src/modules/auth/auth.rpc.ts:

`getIsRegistrationAllowed` so checking whether any users exist uses an existence
check rather than an unfiltered full-table count, preserving the existing
registration and invite behavior. If an existence check is not supported by the
current data layer, apply the established per-IP `rateLimit` pattern used by
`signInDev` to this anonymous query.

An invite id holding a NUL character made the registration check throw in
Postgres, which took /login to the error page. Such an id now counts as an
invite that does not exist.
The sign-up gate on /onboarding always reads a fresh answer, so an invite that
expired since the last check no longer shows a form that would be refused. The
first-user check asks whether any user exists rather than counting them all.
