Build and Run

Windows

Double-click tools/STARTOS.BAT

Prerequisite: bin/os.img must already exist. On first use, run tools/build.sh under Linux/WSL first, or use the bin/os.img bundled with the package.

Linux/WSL

cd tools
chmod +x build.sh
./build.sh

The script will automatically compile, package bin/os.img, and ask whether to launch QEMU immediately.

Manual Build

nasm -f bin src/boot.asm -o bin/boot.bin
nasm -f bin -I src/ src/kernel.asm -o bin/kernel.bin

dd if=/dev/zero of=bin/os.img bs=512 count=2880
dd if=bin/boot.bin of=bin/os.img bs=512 count=1 conv=notrunc
dd if=bin/kernel.bin of=bin/os.img bs=512 seek=1 conv=notrunc

qemu-system-x86_64 -drive format=raw,file=bin/os.img

Note: src/kernel.asm contains %include "stage2.inc", and NASM will expand stage2.inc into it during assembly. Since stage2.inc and kernel.asm are both in the src/ directory, you need to add -I src/ to specify the include search path when compiling.

Dependencies

  • NASM
  • QEMU (for running)
  • dd / certutil (for packaging)
