<excerpt>citeturn0search2 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: today; npm install --save-dev babel-jest @babel/core @babel/preset-envConfigure Babel to target your current version of Node by creating a `babel.config.js` file in the root of your project:

You can run Jest directly from the CLI (if it&#39;s globally available in your `PATH`, e.g. by `yarn global add jest` or `npm install jest --global`) with a variety of useful options.

Here&#39;s how to run Jest on files matching `my-test`, using `config.json` as a configuration file and display a native OS notification after the run:

    jest my-test --notify --config=config.json

If you&#39;d like to learn more about running `jest` through the command line, take a look at the Jest CLI Options page.

## Additional Configuration

### Generate a basic configuration file

Based on your project, Jest will ask you a few questions and will create a basic configuration file with a short description for each option:

    npm init jest@latest

### Using Babel

To use Babel, install required dependencies:

    npm install --save-dev babel-jest @babel/core @babel/preset-env

Configure Babel to target your current version of Node by creating a `babel.config.js` file in the root of your project:

    module.exports = {
      presets: [[&#39;@babel/preset-env&#39;, {targets: {node: &#39;current&#39;}}]],
    };

The ideal configuration for Babel will depend on your project. See Babel&#39;s docs for more details.

Making your Babel config jest-aware

Jest will set `process.env.NODE_ENV` to `&#39;test&#39;` if it&#39;s not set to something else. You can use that in your configuration to conditionally setup only the compilation needed for Jest, e.g.

    module.exports = api =&gt; {
      const isTest = api.env(&#39;test&#39;);
      // You can use isTest to determine what presets and plugins to use.

      return {
        // ...
      };
    };

:::note

`babel-jest` is automatically installed when installing Jest and will automatically transform files if a babel configuration exists in your project. To avoid this behavior, you can explicitly reset the `transform` configuration option:

    module.exports = {
      transform: {},
    };

<title>Getting Started · Jest</title>

<excerpt>citeturn1search6 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last week; Configure Babel to target your current version of Node by creating a `babel.config.js` file in the root of your project: ... While we generally recommend using the same version of every Jest package, this workaround will allow you to continue using the latest version of Jest with Babel 6 for now. ... Refer to the official docs to get started.
To avoid this behavior, you can explicitly reset the `transform` configuration option:

    `// jest.config.js
    module.exports = {
      transform: {},
    };
    `

Babel 6 support

Jest 24 dropped support for Babel 6. We highly recommend you to upgrade to Babel 7, which is actively maintained. However, if you cannot upgrade to Babel 7, either keep using Jest 23 or upgrade to Jest 24 with `babel-jest` locked at version 23, like in the example below:

    `&quot;dependencies&quot;: {
      &quot;babel-core&quot;: &quot;^6.26.3&quot;,
      &quot;babel-jest&quot;: &quot;^23.6.0&quot;,
      &quot;babel-preset-env&quot;: &quot;^1.7.0&quot;,
      &quot;jest&quot;: &quot;^24.0.0&quot;
    }
    `

While we generally recommend using the same version of every Jest package, this workaround will allow you to continue using the latest version of Jest with Babel 6 for now.

### Using webpack

Jest can be used in projects that use webpack to manage assets, styles, and compilation. webpack does offer some unique challenges over other tools. Refer to the webpack guide to get started.

### Using parcel

Jest can be used in projects that use parcel-bundler to manage assets, styles, and compilation similar to webpack. Parcel requires zero configuration. Refer to the official docs to get started.

### Using TypeScript

Jest supports TypeScript, via Babel. First, make sure you followed the instructions on using Babel above. Next, install the `@babel/preset-typescript` via `yarn`:

    `yarn add --dev @babel/preset-typescript
    `

Then add `@babel/preset-typescript` to the list of presets in your `babel.config.js`.

    `// babel.config.js
    module.exports = {
      presets: [
        [&#39;@babel/preset-env&#39;, {targets: {node: &#39;current&#39;}}],
    +    &#39;@babel/preset-typescript&#39;,
      ],
    };
    `

However, there are some caveats to using TypeScript with Babel. Because TypeScript support in Babel is purely transpilation, Jest will not type-check your tests as they are run. If you want that, you can use ts-jest instead, or just run the TypeScript compiler tsc separately (or as part of your build process).

You may also want to install the `@types/jest` module for the version of Jest you&#39;re using. This will help provide full typing when writing your tests with TypeScript.

&gt; For `@types/*` modules it&#39;s recommended to try to match the version of the associated module. For example, if you are using `26.4.0` of `jest` then using `26.4.x` of `@types/jest` is ideal. In general, try to match the major (`26`) and minor (`4`) version as closely as possible.

    `yarn add --dev @types/jest
    `</excerpt>

Upgrading Jest from v29 to v30? This guide aims to help refactoring your configuration and tests.

:::info

See changelog for the full list of changes.

:::

:::note

Upgrading from an older version? You can see the upgrade guide from v28 to v29 here.

:::

## Compatibility

  * Jest 30 drops support for Node 14, 16, 19, and 21. The minimum supported Node versions are now 18.x. Ensure your environment is using a compatible Node release before upgrading.
  * The minimum TypeScript version is now 5.4. Update TypeScript, if you are using type definitions of Jest (or any of its packages).
  * The `jest-environment-jsdom` package now uses JSDOM v26. This update may introduce behavior changes in the DOM environment. If you encounter differences in DOM behavior or new warnings, refer to the JSDOM release notes for v21–26.

## Jest Expect &amp; Matchers

### Removal of Alias Matcher Functions

All alias matcher names have been removed in favor of their primary names. For example:

    # Old (Jest 29)
    jest --testPathPattern=&quot;unit/.*&quot;

    # New (Jest 30)
    jest --testPathPatterns &quot;unit/.*&quot; &quot;integration/.*&quot;

Internally, Jest consolidates these patterns into a `TestPathPatterns` object. If you were programmatically calling Jest’s watch mode with a `testPathPattern`, you must now construct a `TestPathPatterns` instance instead.

### Removed `--init` Command

The interactive config initialization command `jest --init` has been removed. This deprecated command was used to scaffold a Jest configuration file. If you need to create a config, you can run:

    npm init jest@latest
    # Or for Yarn
    yarn create jest
    # Or for pnpm
    pnpm create jest

### Other CLI Changes

  * Jest now validates CLI flags that require arguments to ensure an argument is provided. For example, if you use `--maxWorkers` or `--selectProjects`, you must include a value (e.g. `--maxWorkers=50%`). Previously, Jest might have allowed certain flags without a value (falling back to defaults); now it will throw an error if the value is missing. Ensure any scripts or npm commands passing Jest flags include the necessary arguments.
  * If you use the `--filter` option to filter test files (an advanced use-case where you provide a path to a filter implementation), the expected interface has changed. The filter function should now return an object of shape `{filtered: Array&lt;string&gt;}`, matching the documented format. In prior versions, a different return format may have been accepted (e.g., returning an array directly). Update any custom test filter functions to return an object with a `filtered` property as documented.

title | Jest 30: Faster, Leaner, Better
authors  |
MillerSvt cpojer

Today we are happy to announce the release of Jest 30. This release features a substantial number of changes, fixes, and improvements. While it is one of the largest major releases of Jest ever, we admit that three years for a major release is too long. In the future, we are aiming to make more frequent major releases to keep Jest great for the next decade.

If you want to skip all the news and just get going, run `npm install jest@^30.0.0` and follow the migration guide: Upgrading from Jest 29 to 30.

## What’s New?

Jest 30 is noticeably faster, uses less memory, and comes with tons of new features. First, let’s take a look at the breaking changes:

## Breaking Changes

  * Jest 30 drops support for Node 14, 16, 19, and 21.
  * `jest-environment-jsdom` was upgraded from jsdom 21 to 26.
  * The minimum compatible TypeScript version is now 5.4.
  * Various `expect` aliases were removed. `eslint-plugin-jest` has an autofixer which you can run to automatically upgrade your codebase.

Align the Jest major versions.

babel-jest is 30.5.2, but jest remains 29.7.0. The test-unit workflow therefore uses mixed Jest major versions and can fail because of transformer/runtime incompatibility. This development dependency is not in the production outage path.

Use the Jest 29 pairing unless this PR also upgrades the complete Jest toolchain:
