Why

Players hunting caches with the Arcane detector could not find the spot to dig. On Main the bar and clicks scaled linearly over 2,500–3,500 blocks, so from about 300 blocks in they all read as full: the bar moved one pixel every ~14 blocks, the clicks sat at 16–18 per second, and the particles looked white from ~40 blocks out. The "dig close by" reading only started within 12 blocks in 3D, which on a slope like Mount Vard barely reaches the surface.

Changes

  • Log-scale signal: the bar and the click rate now fill on a log scale of the distance, reaching full at pinpoint-range. Each halving of the distance moves them the same amount, so they keep moving all the way in (new utils/Closeness).
  • 3D distance: the bar and clicks measure distance in 3D, as the close reading already did, so standing high above a cache no longer reads as full. Particles and reroll still use horizontal distance.
  • Defaults: pinpoint-range 12 → 20, close-range-threshold 200 → 60. These don't reach existing configs; Main's values are set by hand when this is pushed.
  • &#RRGGBB colours: messages.yml documents &#RRGGBB, but only bare #RRGGBB was converted, so titles like "dig close by" showed a stray &. Both forms now work.

Testing

  • mvn verify: 174 tests pass; coverage of the changed classes is complete.
  • TFMCDev01 with a character bot (GeigerBot, ~/geiger-logscale-test/test.js on the host), Main's settings plus pinpoint 20 / close-range 60. Bar readings on a mountain cache (Y 639):
Across 3D Bar Title
150 234 0.49 Arcane Signal
80 114 0.64 Arcane Signal
40 64 0.76 Arcane Signal
25 37 0.88 Arcane Signal
15 24 0.96 Arcane Signal
8 9 0.56 Arcane Signal - dig close by
0 6 0.73 Arcane Signal - dig close by

On flatter ground: 1,200 → 0.15, 600 → 0.29, 300 → 0.43. Before this change, everything under 300 blocks read 0.88–1.00.

The bar and the clicks scaled linearly over 2,500+ blocks, so the last few
hundred blocks all read as full and players could not tell where to dig.
Both now fill on a log scale of the 3D distance, reaching full at
pinpoint-range, so each halving of the distance moves them the same amount
and standing high above the cache no longer reads as there.

Defaults: pinpoint-range 12 -> 20 so the close reading reaches the surface
on slopes, close-range-threshold 200 -> 60 so particles turn white only near
the end.

messages.yml documents &#RRGGBB, but only the bare #RRGGBB was turned into a
colour, so titles such as the close-reading bar showed a stray &.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Detection signal strength and click rates now use logarithmic distance scaling for smoother, more consistent readings.
    • Readings account for full three-dimensional distance, including vertical separation.
    • Improved colour-code handling supports combined hexadecimal and legacy formatting codes.
  • Configuration

    • Default pinpoint range is now 20 blocks.
    • Default close-range threshold is now 60 blocks.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Corrected colour formatting to prevent stray ampersands in converted text.

Detection readings now use logarithmic distance scaling and three-dimensional reach. The default pinpoint range and close-range threshold have changed. Hexadecimal colour replacement now supports codes with an optional ampersand.

Changes: Distance-based readings

Layer / File(s) Summary

Adds logarithmic distance scaling with near and far bounds. Changes the default pinpoint range to 20 blocks and close-range threshold to 60 blocks. Updates configuration and utility tests.
Apply three-dimensional logarithmic readings
src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/GeigerClickPlayer.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/SignalBar.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/managers/GeigerManager.java, src/main/resources/config.yml, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/GeigerEffectsTest.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/SignalBarTest.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/managers/GeigerManagerTest.java
Click-rate and signal-bar calculations use logarithmic scaling. Non-pinpoint updates use three-dimensional reach. Tests and configuration comments cover the updated distance calculations.

Hexadecimal colour formatting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Replace hexadecimal colour codes
src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/utils/Utils.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/LifecycleUtilitiesTest.java
colorize replaces hexadecimal codes with an optional ampersand using a shared pattern and matcher. A test covers repeated hexadecimal codes and legacy colour codes.

The detector’s configuration describes the wrong readings at the pinpoint boundary. Correct the comments before merge if possible; the discrepancy does not block detector operation.
