What

Staff can mark an imprisoned character so its player can switch into it and back out at once, which makes prison roleplay playable. The switch cooldown still applies between the player's other characters.

/rpcharacter admin prison <player> [character] [on|off]
  • character is a slug, id or name. Without it, the command uses the player's active character.
  • With no on/off, the mark flips.
  • Permission: rpchar.prison (default op) or rpcharacters.admin.
  • The player is told when the mark changes, and the action is logged.
    • In character selection, where chat waits until Play, the note appears inside the selection screen, which redraws with the new mark.
    • In play, the note arrives as chat.
  • The selection card of a marked character shows In prison: no switch cooldown.
  • The mark is written to the character file at once. If that save fails, the old mark is written back and staff get an error. If that also fails, staff are told the saved mark is uncertain.

How the cooldown works now

  • Switching into a marked character never waits for the cooldown.
  • Switching out of a marked character never waits for it, either.
  • The cooldown now counts from the last unmarked character the player entered. This is saved per account as last-free-character.
    • Example: Alpha (free) → Bravo (prison) → Charlie is still held by the cooldown, so a prison character cannot carry a player from one free character to another.
    • Going back from Bravo to Alpha is free.
  • Prison switches never start a new cooldown.
  • If staff mark the character the player is currently playing, the player can leave it freely.
  • After a release (mark off), the player can keep playing that character or go back to the character they came from. Switching to any other character waits as normal.
  • Accounts without the marker behave exactly as before. Their first character entry after the update fills in last-free-character.

Stored data: prison-switch: "true" in the character file, and last-free-character in the player file.

Not changed: creating a new character during the cooldown, the evil RP / fight blocks on switching, the rpcharacters.no_cooldown bypass, and the staff-only chest menu.

Tests

  • Unit tests in PrisonSwitchTest:
    • the cooldown rules, including no bridging between free characters, release, marking the current character, legacy accounts and id case;
    • the command: permission, usage, targets, flip/on/off, messages, save and selection redraw.
  • An end-to-end CharacterBodiesTest case runs Alpha → Bravo (prison) → Alpha → Charlie through the real selection and activation code.
  • Persistence round trips, tab completion, command routing and the selection card are also covered.
  • On Windows, the full suite fails only the tests that also fail on main there (file-permission tests). PrisonSwitch has 100% line and branch coverage. Linux CI passes.

Dev

Tested on TFMCDev01 with a mineflayer bot account that has three seeded characters (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie) and the 4-day default cooldown running. The Dev jar is this change on top of #129, which was already on Dev. #129 has since merged, and its tree matches main at 945b86d, so the Dev jar is current main plus this PR. Its classes differ from the previous Dev jar only in the files this PR touches.

Result: 36/36 checks passed, with no RPCharacters errors in latest.log.

  • Before the mark, Bravo and Charlie are held ("You can switch in 3d 23h…"), and Alpha resumes freely.
  • Mark Bravo from the console:
    • the action is logged;
    • the bot sees the note in its open selection;
    • Bravo's card shows "In prison: no switch cooldown".
  • Alpha → Bravo plays despite the cooldown.
  • From Bravo, Charlie is still held (no bridging), and Bravo → Alpha plays.
  • The player file keeps the seeded switch time (no new cooldown) and last-free-character = Alpha. Bravo's file has prison-switch.
  • Flipping the mark off (no argument): Bravo is held again and prison-switch is removed from the file.
  • Marking the active character while in play: the note arrives as chat, and Alpha (prison) → Charlie plays freely. Afterwards Alpha (released) and Bravo are both held from Charlie.
  • Usage and unknown-character errors work.

The first Dev run found that chat sent to a player in character selection waits until Play, so the prison note never showed there. Fixed in the second commit. Two later commits came from CodeRabbit's review and cover failed saves. Dev was retested on the final code (288a4b6) with the same 36/36.

Not released and not on Main or Tutorial.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Staff can mark living characters for prison switching, allowing entry to and return from those characters without triggering or being blocked by the character-switch cooldown.
    • Character selection cards identify characters marked for prison switching.
    • Added the /rpcharacter admin prison command, with permission checks and command suggestions.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Switching from a prison-marked character to another character still respects the cooldown.
    • Character-switch and prison-mark settings are retained when player data is saved and restored.

The change adds prison-switch character state and an administrative command. Marked characters can be entered and left without applying the switch cooldown. The last free character and prison-switch state are saved and loaded, and character cards identify marked characters.

Changes: Prison character switching

Adds the prison-switch flag and last-free-character field. The database saves and loads both values. Character cards identify marked characters.

Cooldown decisions use the last free character as the anchor. Entering a marked character does not record a switch; character selection applies the updated rules.

Adds the permission-gated admin prison command, argument completion, and player and staff feedback. The command can toggle or explicitly set a living character’s mark.

Staff mark an imprisoned character with
/rpcharacter admin prison <player> [character] [on|off] (rpchar.prison or
rpcharacters.admin). Its player can switch into and back out of it at any
time; the switch cooldown still holds between the account's other
characters. The cooldown now counts from the last unmarked character the
player entered (saved as last-free-character), so a prison character
cannot carry a player from one free character to another. The selection
card shows "In prison: no switch cooldown" and an open selection is
redrawn when the mark changes.

Chat waits for Play while a player is in character selection, so the
prison mark note goes through CharacterBodies.feedback: in selection it
appears in the redrawn selection screen, in play it is sent as chat.

The prison command now writes the character file with saveCharacterNow
and checks the result. If the save fails, the mark goes back to its
old value and staff are told, instead of seeing success for a mark
that may be lost at the next restart.

A durable save can fail after the character file was already replaced,
for example when the directory sync fails. The command now saves the old
mark again before telling staff nothing changed, and says the saved mark
is uncertain if that second save fails too.
