Summary

@semantic-release/changelog's changelogTitle option was unset, so its prepare.js step never recognized this repo's existing Keep-a-Changelog header (# Changelog title + preamble + ## [Unreleased]) in CHANGELOG.md and just prepended each new release at column zero. Over successive releases that silently pushed the header block further down the file, below the real version history, instead of leaving it as the page preamble.

This PR:

  1. Sets changelogTitle: "# Changelog" on the @semantic-release/changelog plugin in .releaserc.json, so future releases are inserted below the header instead of above it.
  2. Moves the already-orphaned header block (title, preamble, empty ## [Unreleased] section) verbatim back to the top of CHANGELOG.md, above the first real version entry. No wording was changed — only repositioned.

Same pattern as the already-merged reference fix: WYRE-AI/node-domotz#49.

Test plan

  • Verified .releaserc.json is still valid JSON after the edit (python3 -c "import json; json.load(open('.releaserc.json'))")
  • Confirmed the CHANGELOG.md diff is a pure move (header block removed from its old position, re-inserted at the top, no content added/removed/reworded) via git diff
  • Next real release will confirm the config change actually prevents re-orphaning (cannot be verified pre-merge; this PR is not being merged as part of this task)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated the changelog with a Keep a Changelog and Semantic Versioning introduction and an Unreleased section at the top.
    • Standardized the changelog title used for generated release notes.
    • New release notes are placed below the changelog introduction and before the first versioned release entry. If no versioned entry is present, notes are added after the existing content.

Correction (2026-10-16, warden, verified independently): the "same pattern/fix as node-domotz#49" line above is wrong and should not be read as implying domotz already has equivalent header-aware logic. node-domotz#49 is a smaller, earlier, config-only fix (.releaserc.json +1/-1, CHANGELOG.md +9/-0) — it has no scripts/prepare-release.mjs change at all. This PR (and the other 10 in this batch) carries real logic in scripts/prepare-release.mjs that #49 never needed, because domotz is the one repo in this fleet still running a real npx semantic-release direct-push pipeline where @semantic-release/changelog's own changelogTitle option genuinely works — the other 11 repos use a dryRun+PR-based flow where that config option is inert and the fix has to live in a custom script instead. Does not affect this PR's own correctness; see task_1791494181526_78986701 for the full writeup.

…rphaning

@semantic-release/changelog's prepare.js never recognized the existing
Keep-a-Changelog header because changelogTitle was unset, so it prepended
each new release at column zero and pushed the title/preamble/Unreleased
block further down the file on every release. Set changelogTitle so future
releases are inserted below the header instead of above it, and move the
already-orphaned header block back to the top of CHANGELOG.md.

Same pattern as WYRE-AI/node-domotz#49.

Walkthrough

The changelog now has a title, introductory statements, and an [Unreleased] heading. The release script inserts release notes relative to existing changelog content and runs its workflow only when invoked directly.

Changes: Changelog and release preparation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and scaffold the changelog
.releaserc.json, CHANGELOG.md
The changelog plugin configuration sets the title to # Changelog. The changelog adds introductory statements and an [Unreleased] heading, and removes the duplicate introductory block from the end.
Place release notes and control script execution
scripts/prepare-release.mjs, tests/unit/prepare-release.test.ts
The exported insertReleaseNotes helper places notes relative to existing content and recognized release headings. The release workflow runs through main() only when the script is invoked directly. Unit tests cover note placement for empty changelogs, scaffolds, and release headings.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in CHANGELOG.md: Adds the changelog title, documentation and versioning format statements, and an empty [Unreleased] section.
  • observed — Modified behavior in CHANGELOG.md: Removes the trailing blank line after the [0.1.0] release links.
  • observed — Modified behavior in scripts/prepare-release.mjs: Added exported insertReleaseNotes(notes, existing). It returns the notes alone when the changelog is empty; when no recognized ## [digit… or # digit.digit.digit heading exists, it appends notes after existing content; when the first heading is at index 0, it prepends notes; otherwise it keeps the preceding scaffold above the notes and the release entries below them. This replaces unconditional prepending.
  • observed — Modified behavior in scripts/prepare-release.mjs: Moved the release workflow from top-level execution into asynchronous main(). It retains the no-release exit and output, package version update, and release output writes, but writes the changelog using insertReleaseNotes rather than unconditional prepending.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title accurately identifies the release-related changelog fix and the added changelogTitle configuration. It does not mention the supporting insertion logic, but it clearly describes the primary objective.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #49 is closed and provides historical context only. It imposes no active coding requirements for this pull request. The current changes implement the stated changelog header and release-insertion fix, but no issue acceptance criteria require assessment.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

No active directly linked issue defines a scope boundary. The reviewed changes remain connected to the stated changelog fix: .releaserc.json sets changelogTitle, CHANGELOG.md restores the header, insertReleaseNotes preserves the header during the dry-run release flow, and tests cover the insertion behavior.

Full details: Changelog Entry

Explanation

The PR changes release configuration and runtime release behavior. .releaserc.json adds changelogTitle, and scripts/prepare-release.mjs adds header-aware changelog insertion. These changes fix a user-visible changelog bug. CHANGELOG.md only moves the existing scaffold; the ## [Unreleased] section remains empty, with the next line being the existing ## [1.1.2] heading. No new entry was added beneath ## [Unreleased].

Resolution

Add a corresponding entry beneath ## [Unreleased] in the Fixed section for changelog header orphaning and header-aware release-note insertion.

…ease.mjs

The prior commit on this branch added changelogTitle to .releaserc.json,
but this repo's real release mechanism (prepare-release.mjs, invoked by
release.yml's PREPARE-mode step) calls semanticRelease({ dryRun: true }),
which skips semantic-release's own prepare lifecycle step entirely -- so
@semantic-release/changelog's changelogTitle-aware insert logic never runs
here. changelogTitle was inert; the header-position fix would have been
undone on the very next release through this pipeline.

insertReleaseNotes() now detects an existing title/preamble/Unreleased
scaffold (by finding the first real release heading -- "## [<digit>" or
a bare "# X.Y.Z " -- and treating anything before it as scaffold to
preserve above new notes) and inserts new release notes below that
scaffold instead of at column zero. Falls back to the original unqualified
prepend for any repo/state with no such scaffold, so this is a no-op for
every other case.

Verified against this exact file (not a parallel reimplementation): ran a
real test importing insertReleaseNotes from this script with
semantic-release actually installed, covering 6 cases (no-header-repo
parity with the original prepend, header+Unreleased, header-without-
Unreleased, header-only/no-releases-yet, brand-new-repo/no-existing-file,
and a repeated-release idempotence check) -- all pass. Also ran this exact
script directly (node scripts/prepare-release.mjs) against this branch to
confirm the refactor (wrapping main() behind an import.meta.url guard so
insertReleaseNotes is importable without triggering a real dry run) didn't
change the script's own real behavior.

Found via CodeRabbit's CHANGES_REQUESTED on the prior commit -- flagging a
real gap in the fleet-wide changelogTitle sweep's original diagnosis.

- Line 49: Update headingRe in insertReleaseNotes to recognize linked one-level
release headings beginning with “# [” and a digit, while continuing to recognize
existing release headings and exclude “## [Unreleased]”. This keeps release
insertion order consistent with the downstream extractor.
- Line 101: Update the entry-point guard in the release script to compare
import.meta.url with pathToFileURL(process.argv[1]).href, and retain a check
that process.argv[1] exists before converting it so imports without an
entry-point path remain safe.

CodeRabbit catch on the previous commit: the direct-execution guard
compared import.meta.url (URL-encoded -- a space becomes %20, a #
becomes %23) against a naively file://-prefixed process.argv[1] (a raw
filesystem path, never encoded). A checkout path containing either
character would make the comparison silently false and never invoke
main() at all. Reproduced directly (a path with a space: encoded
comparison -> false, fileURLToPath-based comparison -> true) before
applying the fix, not just read-and-trusted. CI's own checkout path
doesn't contain either character today, so this was latent, not a live
failure -- fixing it anyway since the safe form costs nothing.
