Problem

@semantic-release/changelog's prepare.js step never recognizes an existing title/header line in CHANGELOG.md when changelogTitle is unset (the default). Every release prepends new notes at column 0, so the Keep-a-Changelog-style header (title + preamble + ## [Unreleased]) silently gets pushed further down the file on every release. On main as of this PR, that header had drifted all the way to the bottom of the file.

Same root cause and same fix shape as WYRE-AI/node-domotz#49, which is the precedent this PR follows.

Fix

  1. .releaserc.json: set changelogTitle explicitly on the @semantic-release/changelog plugin so future releases insert below the existing header instead of above it:
    -"@semantic-release/changelog",
    +["@semantic-release/changelog", { "changelogTitle": "# Changelog" }],
  2. CHANGELOG.md: moved the orphaned header block (title + preamble + ## [Unreleased] + its original content) verbatim from the bottom of the file back to the top. No wording was changed or copied from node-domotz — this is this repo's own original header text. Unlike a sibling repo in this same fix batch, this repo only had one ## [Unreleased] section, so the move was a clean, unambiguous relocation.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Organized the changelog with an introduction and an Unreleased section describing the API client’s features and security capabilities; existing version history remains.
  • Chores
    • Set the generated changelog heading to “Changelog.”
    • Improved release note placement to preserve the introduction and any Unreleased section, placing new entries before existing version history.

Correction (2026-10-16, warden, verified independently): the "same pattern/fix as node-domotz#49" line above is wrong and should not be read as implying domotz already has equivalent header-aware logic. node-domotz#49 is a smaller, earlier, config-only fix (.releaserc.json +1/-1, CHANGELOG.md +9/-0) — it has no scripts/prepare-release.mjs change at all. This PR (and the other 10 in this batch) carries real logic in scripts/prepare-release.mjs that #49 never needed, because domotz is the one repo in this fleet still running a real npx semantic-release direct-push pipeline where @semantic-release/changelog's own changelogTitle option genuinely works — the other 11 repos use a dryRun+PR-based flow where that config option is inert and the fix has to live in a custom script instead. Does not affect this PR's own correctness; see task_1791494181526_78986701 for the full writeup.

📝 Walkthrough

The release configuration now sets the changelog title. The changelog introduction and [Unreleased] content appear at the start of the file. The release script adds a helper to place new notes around existing changelog headings and runs release processing only when invoked directly.

Changes: Release changelog

Layer / File(s) Summary
Changelog configuration and content
.releaserc.json, CHANGELOG.md
The changelog plugin receives a changelogTitle option. The introduction and [Unreleased] content move from the end of CHANGELOG.md to the start.
Release note placement
scripts/prepare-release.mjs, tests/unit/prepare-release.test.ts
The script adds insertReleaseNotes to place new notes around existing changelog headings. Release processing moves into main() and runs only when the file is invoked directly. Unit tests cover note placement for empty and populated changelogs.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: asachs01

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 23eb5

Release notes are now placed below the changelog header and scaffold. Two minor issues remain: a documentation link points at the wrong Keep a Changelog version, and one linked heading form could make notes appear out of order. Neither blocks the release workflow, so this is safe to merge with follow-up.

…ease.mjs

The prior commit on this branch added changelogTitle to .releaserc.json,
but this repo's real release mechanism (prepare-release.mjs, invoked by
release.yml's PREPARE-mode step) calls semanticRelease({ dryRun: true }),
which skips semantic-release's own prepare lifecycle step entirely -- so
@semantic-release/changelog's changelogTitle-aware insert logic never runs
here. changelogTitle was inert; the header-position fix would have been
undone on the very next release through this pipeline.

insertReleaseNotes() now detects an existing title/preamble/Unreleased
scaffold (by finding the first real release heading -- "## [<digit>" or
a bare "# X.Y.Z " -- and treating anything before it as scaffold to
preserve above new notes) and inserts new release notes below that
scaffold instead of at column zero. Falls back to the original unqualified
prepend for any repo/state with no such scaffold, so this is a no-op for
every other case.

Verified against this exact file (not a parallel reimplementation): ran a
real test importing insertReleaseNotes from this script with
semantic-release actually installed, covering 6 cases (no-header-repo
parity with the original prepend, header+Unreleased, header-without-
Unreleased, header-only/no-releases-yet, brand-new-repo/no-existing-file,
and a repeated-release idempotence check) -- all pass. Also ran this exact
script directly (node scripts/prepare-release.mjs) against this branch to
confirm the refactor (wrapping main() behind an import.meta.url guard so
insertReleaseNotes is importable without triggering a real dry run) didn't
change the script's own real behavior.

Found via CodeRabbit's CHANGES_REQUESTED on the prior commit -- flagging a
real gap in the fleet-wide changelogTitle sweep's original diagnosis.

Recognize linked single-# release headings.

If the newest release starts with # [1.1.0](...), headingRe skips it. The helper then inserts the new release after that entry, or at the end when no later heading matches. Include # [version] in the release-heading pattern. The repository’s release-note extractor already treats that heading as a version boundary. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

CodeRabbit catch on the previous commit: the direct-execution guard
compared import.meta.url (URL-encoded -- a space becomes %20, a #
becomes %23) against a naively file://-prefixed process.argv[1] (a raw
filesystem path, never encoded). A checkout path containing either
character would make the comparison silently false and never invoke
main() at all. Reproduced directly (a path with a space: encoded
comparison -> false, fileURLToPath-based comparison -> true) before
applying the fix, not just read-and-trusted. CI's own checkout path
doesn't contain either character today, so this was latent, not a live
failure -- fixing it anyway since the safe form costs nothing.

109-109: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Normalize process.argv[1] before comparing it with the module path.

fileURLToPath(import.meta.url) returns a resolved absolute path. process.argv[1] is the path as the user typed it. If someone runs node ./scripts/prepare-release.mjs or uses a symlinked path, the strict comparison can differ. main() then does not run, and the script exits silently with no release result. The CI invocation node scripts/prepare-release.mjs is resolved by Node to an absolute path in argv[1], so CI is not affected today. Local runs with unusual paths can still be affected.

Use resolve(process.argv[1]) for the comparison. Use realpathSync on both sides if symlinks must be supported.

Proposed fix
-if (process.argv[1] && fileURLToPath(import.meta.url) === process.argv[1]) {
+if (process.argv[1] && fileURLToPath(import.meta.url) === resolve(process.argv[1])) {

Add the import at the top of the file:

+import { resolve } from "node:path";
