Summary

Table has no built-in way to reorder rows. This adds a research example for reordering records with a drag handle, keyboard support, and screen reader announcements. The example lives under Guides > Accessibility > Table Patterns. It does not add reorder behavior to Table.

  • Pointer users drag a handle in the first column. Keyboard users pick the row up with Space or Enter, move it with the Up and Down Arrow keys, drop it with Space or Enter, and cancel with Escape.
  • Each handle is a TertiaryButton named Move row {employee name}. A muted tooltip shows "Move row" without replacing that name. The column header is the visually hidden text "Sort", and the employee name is the row header.
  • @dnd-kit supplies the pointer and keyboard interaction. Its default instructions and live-region messages are replaced with messages that include the employee name and position. The latest announcement is printed above the table so readers can see it without a screen reader. That visible text is plain content, so it is not announced twice.
  • A picked-up row stays in the table and only moves with a transform. It uses a popover surface, a level 5 depth shadow, and a small shift to the right so it stays distinct from the rows sliding around it. The handle cursor changes from grab to grabbing.
  • The Table docs, the table-patterns overview, and the MCP accessibility catalog link to the example. Those links are absolute Storybook URLs so they still resolve on the design site.
  • @dnd-kit/core, @dnd-kit/sortable, and @dnd-kit/utilities are root dev dependencies, used only by this example.

Release Note

Documentation only. Table does not gain reorder behavior. The pattern is a research example at Guides > Accessibility > Table Patterns > Draggable Rows.

Checklist

For the Reviewer

  • PR title is short and descriptive
  • PR summary describes the change (Fixes/Resolves linked correctly)
  • PR Release Notes describes additional information useful to call out in a release message or removed if not applicable
  • Breaking Changes provides useful information to upgrade to this code or removed if not applicable
  • Confirm this should stay a research example and not become Table API

Where Should the Reviewer Start?

modules/docs/mdx/accessibility/examples/Table/WithDraggableRows.tsx

Then the guide that explains it:

modules/docs/mdx/accessibility/tables/DraggableRows.mdx

Areas for Feedback? (optional)

  • Code
  • Documentation
  • Testing
  • Codemods

Please focus on the accessible names, the custom @dnd-kit announcements, and whether the picked-up row treatment is clear for a keyboard user. The visible announcement above the table is for the demonstration. It is not a second live region.

Testing Manually

  1. Open Guides > Accessibility > Table Patterns > Draggable Rows in Storybook.
  2. Drag a handle with the pointer and confirm the row lifts (popover surface, shadow, shift to the right) and the other rows slide to make room.
  3. Tab to "Move row Avery Johnson". Press Space, ArrowDown, then Space. Avery Johnson should move below Jordan Lee, and the text above the table should read "Avery Johnson row dropped at position 2 of 4."
  4. Pick up a row and press Escape. The row should return to its previous position.
  5. yarn cypress:run --spec cypress/component/Table.spec.tsx

Screenshots or GIFs (if applicable)

Add a short recording of a keyboard reorder, including the picked-up row and the announcement above the table.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added an accessible draggable-rows table example with pointer and keyboard reordering, row-action controls, and status announcements.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance covering draggable-row interactions, keyboard cancellation, and screen-reader feedback.
    • Expanded table accessibility documentation and updated table-pattern links to point to the relevant documentation pages.
    • Clarified that the table component does not provide built-in row reordering and documented considerations for reorderable table designs.

Give the drag handle and the menu their own columns, and correct the guide so the accessible names match the example.
