fix(auth): one inbound credential rule: empty headers are offered, no fall-through, case-insensitive Bearer - #1383
Every inbound gateway-credential reader now follows one rule. The first credential header present (x-aisix-api-key, then Authorization, then x-api-key) decides. If it is empty or unusable, the request gets a 401 that names that header, with no fall-through to the next header and no anonymous downgrade. The Bearer scheme name is matched case-insensitively.
Behaviour changes after upgrading:
Anonymous MCP clients. With MCP anonymous access enabled, a request to /mcp or /mcp/{server} carrying an empty x-aisix-api-key, Authorization or x-api-key header used to be served as the anonymous principal. It is now rejected with 401, like any other offered-but-invalid credential. A client relying on anonymous access must stop sending the empty header. Requests with no credential header at all are still admitted anonymously.
gateway_key passthrough routes. These had their own credential reader that fell through to x-api-key whenever Authorization held no usable bearer: an empty value, Basic ..., Bearer with no token, or non-ASCII bytes. They now read the credential exactly like /v1/*, so any present-but-unusable Authorization is a 401 even when x-api-key carries a valid key. A caller that needs Authorization for something else (for example an upstream's own Basic auth) should send the gateway key in x-aisix-api-key. That header is the only one read when present, and it leaves Authorization to the caller.
Bearer scheme. bearer <key> and BEARER <key> are now accepted wherever the gateway reads Authorization: Bearer for an inbound credential: /v1/*, /mcp, /a2a, the realtime handshake, passthrough routes (gateway_key, and the configured header of header_key routes) and the Admin API. Before, Authorization on /v1/*, /mcp, /a2a, realtime, header_key routes and the Admin API accepted only the exact spelling Bearer; gateway_key routes and x-aisix-api-key also took bearer. Per RFC 7235 the scheme name is case-insensitive. The key itself stays case-sensitive.
401 message. ProxyError::MissingAuth always rendered "missing or malformed Authorization header". So an empty x-aisix-api-key sent next to a valid Authorization (a 401, since the dedicated header is the only one read when present) told the caller to fix the wrong header. It now names the failing header: "missing or malformed x-aisix-api-key header" or "... x-api-key header". The HTTP status, error type and code, and the WWW-Authenticate challenge are unchanged. A request with no credential header keeps the old text.
The root cause of the MCP case was that credential_offered disagreed with its own doc. The doc said a present-but-unusable header counts as offered, but the code treated an empty or blank value as absent. It now treats any present credential header as offered.
Paths covered: every /v1/* endpoint, /a2a and /mcp authenticate through the shared extractor (header_credential). The realtime handshake reads header_credential too. gateway_key passthrough now calls it as well. credential_offered has one consumer, MCP anonymous entry. anonymous passthrough routes read no gateway credential. The Admin API reads its own admin key, with no anonymous path and no fall-through; it only gains the case-insensitive scheme.
Tests. The DP e2e mcp-anonymous-access-e2e gains three cases:
an empty credential header in each slot on /mcp/docs and /mcp gets 401;
an empty x-aisix-api-key with a valid Authorization, on /mcp/docs and /v1/chat/completions, gets a 401 naming x-aisix-api-key;
a valid x-aisix-api-key authenticates as its own key.
The existing no-credential case still covers anonymous admission. passthrough-route-e2e adds one case that pins, on a gateway_key route and on /v1/chat/completions, the following: lowercase and uppercase Bearer are accepted, an upper-cased key is refused, Basic ... or a bare Bearer next to a valid x-api-key gets 401, and x-aisix-api-key is the migration path. The behaviour-changing cases fail against the previous binary. Unit tests cover credential_offered (the old assertion that a blank Authorization is not offered is inverted), the per-header message, the MCP router's no-downgrade check, the passthrough reader, the scheme matcher, and the Admin API.
…ames it
`credential_offered` documented that a present-but-unusable credential
header counts as offered, but treated an empty or whitespace-only
`x-aisix-api-key`, `Authorization` or `x-api-key` as absent. With MCP
anonymous access enabled, such a request was served as the anonymous
principal instead of being rejected. Any present credential header now
counts as offered, so anonymous MCP entry answers it with 401.
`ProxyError::MissingAuth` always said "missing or malformed Authorization
header", even when the header that failed was `x-aisix-api-key` or
`x-api-key`. It now carries the failing header's name. Status, error
type/code and the auth challenge are unchanged; a request with no
credential header at all keeps the old text.
`gateway_key` passthrough routes read their credential with their own
helper, which let an empty `Authorization` fall through to `x-api-key`.
An empty `Authorization` is now a 401 there too.

Walkthrough
Authentication now treats supported credential headers as offered when present, including empty or malformed values. Missing-auth errors identify the selected header. Shared Bearer parsing accepts case-insensitive schemes, and gateway-key authentication does not fall through from an unusable selected credential.
ProxyError::MissingAuth now carries a header name. Error classification, auth-challenge handling, and attempt classification match the updated variant.

Supported credential headers count as offered based on presence. Bearer parsing accepts case-insensitive schemes, and parsing errors identify the selected header. MCP tests cover empty and whitespace-only values.
api7/aisix#1361: Adds x-aisix-api-key and shared gateway credential handling, which this change extends with selected-header behavior for empty or malformed values.

Full details: E2e Test Quality Review
Explanation
The PR adds real E2E coverage through the gateway, etcd, MCP upstreams, and an OpenAI-compatible upstream. The tests cover empty headers in all credential slots, no-credential anonymous access, invalid credentials, header-precedence combinations, named 401 messages, case-insensitive Bearer schemes, and case-sensitive tokens. Test names, variables, loops, and assertions are clear. The added tests do not introduce mocks, shared mutable test ordering, or concurrency hazards.
Full details: Security Check
Explanation
No security vulnerability was introduced in the reviewed diff. 1. Sensitive data exposure: No issues found. Authentication errors expose only fixed header labels, not credential values. The changed authentication paths do not add logging or serialization of tokens or headers. 2. Unencrypted secrets in databases: No issues found. The diff contains no production database model or persistence change. 3. Authorization or permission bypass: No issues found. Empty or malformed credentials now reject instead of falling back to anonymous access. Passthrough authentication also stops fall-through and still calls authenticate_token. 4. Cross-resource access: No issues found. The diff changes credential parsing only and does not change resource ownership checks. 5. TLS or cryptographic configuration: No issues found. The shared Bearer parser changes scheme matching only. Credential values remain unchanged and are still validated by the existing authentication path. 6. Shared resource safety: No issues found. The diff contains no shared-resource binding or deletion logic. 7. Secret reference resolution: No issues found. The diff contains no configuration secret-reference handling. Evidence: credential_offered now checks header presence in crates/aisix-proxy/src/auth.rs:493-500; MCP then uses the normal authentication extractor instead of anonymous access at crates/aisix-proxy/src/mcp.rs:153-183. ProxyError::MissingAuth carries only a static header label in crates/aisix-proxy/src/error.rs:164-169. The passthrough change at crates/aisix-proxy/src/passthrough_route.rs:1291-1299 rejects unusable credentials and invokes the existing token authentication function.

…scheme is case-insensitive
`gateway_key` passthrough routes now read the gateway credential through
the same `header_credential` as `/v1/*`, `/mcp`, `/a2a` and realtime: the
first credential header present decides. A present but unusable
`Authorization` (`Basic ...`, `Bearer` with no token, non-ASCII bytes) is
a 401 naming `Authorization`, and no longer falls through to `x-api-key`.
A caller that keeps `Authorization` for something else should send the
gateway key in `x-aisix-api-key`.
The `Bearer` scheme name is matched case-insensitively (RFC 7235) wherever
an inbound credential is read: `/v1/*`, `/mcp`, `/a2a`, realtime,
passthrough (`gateway_key` and the `header_key` header) and the Admin
API. `bearer <key>` and `BEARER <key>` now work everywhere; the key itself
stays case-sensitive.
