test(e2e): stop the heap pprof symbolization case from flaking - #1384
The "GET /debug/pprof/heap returns a symbolized gzipped pprof" case in memory-observability-e2e fails intermittently with no gateway function among N names. This makes that failure negligibly unlikely without loosening what the case checks.
The cause is sampling density, not symbolization. By default the gateway samples one allocation per 2 MiB on average (lg_prof_sample:21 in the binary's _rjem_malloc_conf). A freshly started test gateway has only a few MiB live, so its profile carries 1–7 live samples. Every failing profile I captured had exactly one sample: std's runtime-init Box clone under std::rt::lang_start → std::sys::pal::unix::init. Every location in it resolved to a name, and none was under gateway code. Thread-per-core isn't involved.
Scenario confirmed invalid by a human (2026-10-29): a freshly started gateway at the default 2 MiB sampling interval is not guaranteed to have gateway frames in its heap profile, and that is not a product promise.
So only this case now spawns its own gateway with _RJEM_MALLOC_CONF=lg_prof_sample:16 (64 KiB). Its profile has a few hundred function names, plenty of them under aisix_*. prof:true,prof_active:true still come from the binary; only the interval changes. Every other case in the file stays on the shared gateway at the factory default. The assertions are unchanged.
Because the case now profiles a gateway it just spawned, spawnApp also waits for the debug listener before returning. The gateway binds that listener in its own task, so a request right after spawning could race it, and that applies to every case that hits debugUrl straight away. The gate is a TCP connect rather than a profile request, so it doesn't take a dump or move the dump counters. This is a readiness gate on a startup race I never caught failing, so it has no fail-before test of its own.
A fail-before/pass-after test doesn't apply to a flake fix, so here is the evidence instead. Before: the single case, run 20 times against a local debug build, failed 2 times (10%). After: the same case, run 60 times, failed 0 times, and the whole file passes. The check still catches real breakage. Against a stripped copy of the binary (a genuinely unsymbolized profile) it fails with no gateway function among 4 names. With the matcher pointed at a prefix that doesn't exist, it fails with among 303 names.
… gateway frames
At the gateway's default 2 MiB sampling interval a freshly started test
gateway has only a handful of live samples, and about one profile in ten
held only std's runtime-init allocation (Box clone under
std::rt::lang_start), so 'GET /debug/pprof/heap returns a symbolized
gzipped pprof' failed with 'no gateway function among N names'.
Symbolization was fine in every failing profile; the sampler simply had
not landed on a gateway allocation.
The shared gateway in memory-observability-e2e now runs with
_RJEM_MALLOC_CONF=lg_prof_sample:16 (64 KiB), which yields ~70 live
samples, ~60 under gateway code. prof:true/prof_active:true still come
from the binary's baked-in malloc_conf.

Walkthrough
The manual heap-profile test now uses a dedicated gateway configured with jemalloc profile sampling at lg_prof_sample:16. It checks the gateway’s metrics before and after the profile request and shuts down the gateway in a finally block.
Changes: Memory observability test

Summary
Run profile checks against a dedicated gateway tests/e2e/src/cases/memory-observability-e2e.test.ts
The test requests a profile from a dedicated gateway with denser jemalloc sampling. It checks the metrics, profile contents, and successful manual dump count, then shuts down the gateway in a finally block.
The profile test can still fail intermittently at startup; a listener readiness check would stabilize it.

Explanation
PASS — The PR is focused and correct. The changed E2E case starts a dedicated gateway with dense jemalloc sampling, exercises the real /debug/pprof/heap endpoint, validates gzip, inuse_space, symbol names, and the manual-dump metric delta, then always calls dense.exit() in finally. The dedicated app avoids shared-test state and uses unique harness resources. No hidden ordering, mock overuse, ignored errors, or unrelated changes were found.
Full details: Security Check
Explanation
No security issue is introduced. The only changed file is the E2E test at tests/e2e/src/cases/memory-observability-e2e.test.ts:354-379; it starts a dedicated local gateway with _RJEM_MALLOC_CONF=lg_prof_sample:16, reads its pprof and metrics responses, and shuts it down in finally. It does not add production logging, persistence, authorization, ownership, TLS, shared-resource mutation, or secret-reference handling. Category 1: No issues found. Category 2: No issues found. Category 3: No issues found. Category 4: No issues found. Category 5: No issues found. Category 6: No issues found; the dedicated gateway reduces shared-resource interaction. Category 7: No issues found; the environment value is a fixed allocator sampling setting, not a secret reference.

The shared gateway goes back to the factory-default sampling interval, so
every other memory-observability case keeps running the shipped
configuration; only the symbolized-pprof case spawns its own gateway at
lg_prof_sample:16.

The gateway binds its debug listener in a task of its own, so a case that
requests /debug/pprof/heap right after spawnApp could race it. The gate is
a TCP connect, not a profile request, which would take a dump and move the
dump counters the cases assert on.
