Type of change:

  • CI/CD or Tests

What this PR does / why we need it:

Port of apache/apisix-ingress-controller#2907. Every e2e and conformance job fails before any test runs, on master since 2026-10-27 and on PRs since 2026-10-23:

make kind-load-adc-image
Command Output: ctr: rpc error: code = NotFound desc = content digest sha256:08d3b285700dffd91925e9d6328690d3336ac3adf6539aab94988bcecd727715: not found

ubuntu-latest moved to ubuntu-26.04 (Docker 29, containerd image store). With that store, docker save exports the whole multi-platform index of a pulled image although only the host platform's content is present, and kind load docker-image imports with ctr images import --all-platforms, so it fails on the missing platform. Upgrading kind does not help: v0.33.0 and main import the same way.

  • Makefile: load every image through a kind-load-image helper. Under the containerd image store it saves only the Docker server's platform with docker save --platform and loads it with kind load image-archive; otherwise it keeps kind load docker-image (docker save --platform needs Docker 28+). This covers the EE gateway/dashboard images as well.
  • adc extraction: ghcr.io/api7/adc:dev is now a distroless image whose entrypoint is a single /adc binary, so copying main.cjs fails. Copy /adc and set ADC_BIN to it in both e2e workflows.
  • MQTT e2e: ubuntu-26.04 hosts ship an AppArmor profile for /usr/sbin/mosquitto that path-attaches inside kind pods and denies reading /mosquitto/config/mosquitto.conf (exit 3, apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" profile="mosquitto"). That config file has no active lines, so start /usr/sbin/mosquitto without -c.

Validation: the same changes pass all 25 checks on apache/apisix-ingress-controller#2907, which ran on ubuntu-26.04. The Makefile helper was also verified locally on Docker 29 (containerd store) and Docker 27 (overlay2) with kind v0.27.0.

Pre-submission checklist:

  • Did you explain what problem does this PR solve? Or what new features have been added?
  • Have you added corresponding test cases?
  • Have you modified the corresponding document?
  • Is this PR backward compatible?

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated development and end-to-end test workflows to use the ADC executable from the development container.
    • Improved image loading for Kind clusters using Docker’s containerd snapshotter, while retaining the existing approach for other configurations.
    • Updated the MQTT test deployment to start Mosquitto with an explicit command, improving consistency in Kind environments.

Walkthrough

The PR updates ADC dev-binary extraction in two E2E workflows, routes Kind image loading through a helper that handles Docker’s containerd snapshotter, and sets the Mosquitto test container to invoke its executable directly.

Changes: E2E setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
ADC dev binary in workflows
.github/workflows/apisix-e2e-test.yml, .github/workflows/e2e-test.yml
When ADC_VERSION is dev, both workflows copy /adc, verify it with --version, and set ADC_BIN to its path.
Kind image-loading helper
Makefile
A shared macro uses an image archive when Docker uses the containerd snapshotter and direct Kind loading otherwise. Image-loading targets use this macro.
Mosquitto test command
test/e2e/crds/v2/streamroute.go
The Mosquitto test container is configured to run /usr/sbin/mosquitto directly.

Possibly related issues

  • The ADC image executable-interface issue reports that newer images no longer provide the expected main.cjs path. This PR instead copies and runs the packaged /adc binary.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 99225

The change fixes the CI image loading for Docker 29 with the containerd image store. Local setups running Docker 27 with the containerd store may fail at image loading, so add a fallback or document Docker 28 as the minimum version. No other blocking risk remains.

Full details: E2e Test Quality Review

Explanation

No explicit E2E-quality failure is introduced. The MQTT case remains a real end-to-end flow: it creates a Kubernetes Deployment and Service, configures an ApisixRoute, and connects an MQTT client through the APISIX TCP endpoint. The diff adds no mocks, hidden test-order dependency, complex assertions, new unchecked Go errors, or concurrency changes. The Makefile and workflow edits directly address the reported Docker/containerd, ADC image, and AppArmor CI failures.

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

No security issue was introduced by the reviewed changes. Category 1: No issues found; the diff does not log or return credentials, headers, or configuration secrets. Category 2: No issues found; it adds no database persistence. Category 3: No issues found; it changes no API endpoint or permission check. Category 4: No issues found; it adds no resource lookup or ownership operation. Category 5: No issues found; it changes no TLS security setting. Category 6: No issues found; it changes only CI image loading and an isolated MQTT test deployment. Category 7: No issues found; it adds no environment or secret-reference resolution. The changed code copies and runs the ADC binary, selects a Docker image platform for Kind loading, and changes the MQTT test command.

Use an ARM64-compatible fixture for httpbin.

The documented local ARM64 test path runs make kind-load-images, but its pull-infra-images prerequisite first runs docker pull kennethreitz/httpbin:latest. This tag is a single linux/amd64 image, so a native ARM64 Docker daemon fails during the pull, before docker save --platform runs. Replace the fixture with a multi-platform image or define an explicit emulation path. No inspected CI workflow uses an ARM64 runner.

## 27.2

Release notes for Docker Engine version 27.2 releases.

### 27.2.1

2024-09-09

#### Bug fixes and enhancements

  * containerd image store: Fix non-container images being hidden in the `docker image ls` output. moby/moby#48402
  * containerd image store: Improve `docker pull` error message when the image platform doesn't match. moby/moby#48415
  * CLI: Fix issue causing `docker login` to not remove repository names from passed in registry addresses, resulting in credentials being stored under the wrong key. docker/cli#5385
  * CLI: Fix issue that will sometimes cause the browser-login flow to fail if the CLI process is suspended and then resumed while waiting for the user to authenticate. docker/cli#5376
  * CLI: `docker login` now returns an error instead of hanging if called non-interactively with `--password` or `--password-stdin` but without `--user`. docker/cli#5402

You can still use the old method of logging in with a username and password or access token, but device code login is more secure and doesn't require you to enter your password in the CLI.

Image: device-code-loginDevice code login

To use the old method, use `docker login -u <username>`.

##### Multi-platform support for `docker image ls`

Experimental

This is experimental and may change at any time without any backward compatibility.

With the containerd image store enabled, the `docker image ls` command (or `docker images` shorthand) now supports a `--tree` flag that now shows if an image is a multi-platform image.

#### API

  * `GET /images/json` response now includes `Manifests` field, which contains information about the sub-manifests included in the image index. This includes things like platform-specific manifests and build attestations.

The new field will only be populated if the request also sets the `manifests` query parameter to `true`.

Experimental

This is experimental and may change at any time without any backward compatibility.

#### Bug fixes and enhancements

  * CLI: Fix issue with remote contexts over SSH where the CLI would allocate a pseudo-TTY when connecting to the remote host, which causes issues in rare situations. docker/cli#5351
  * Fix an issue that prevented network creation with a `--ip-range` ending on a 64-bit boundary. moby/moby#48326
  * CLI: IPv6 addresses shown by `docker ps` in port bindings are now bracketed. docker/cli#5365
  * containerd image store: Fix early error exit from `docker load` in cases where unpacking the image would fail. moby/moby#48376
  * containerd image store: Fix the previous image not being persisted as dangling after `docker pull`. moby/moby#48380

#### Packaging updates

  * Update BuildKit to v0.15.2. moby/moby#48341
#### New

  * containerd image store: Add `--platform` flag to `docker image push` and improve the default behavior when not all platforms of the multi-platform image are available locally. docker/cli#4984, moby/moby#47679
  * Add support to `docker stack deploy` for `driver_opts` in a service's networks. docker/cli#5125
  * Consider additional `/usr/local/libexec` and `/usr/libexec` paths when looking up the userland proxy binaries by a name with a `docker-` prefix. moby/moby#47804

#### Bug fixes and enhancements

  * `*client.Client` instances are now always safe for concurrent use by multiple goroutines. Previously, this could lead to data races when the `WithAPIVersionNegotiation()` option is used. moby/moby#47961
  * Fix a bug causing the Docker CLI to leak Unix sockets in `$TMPDIR` in some cases. docker/cli#5146
  * Don't ignore a custom seccomp profile when used in conjunction with `--privileged`. moby/moby#47500
  * Deprecate pkg/dmesg. This package was no longer used, and will be removed in the next release. moby/moby#47999
  * Deprecate `pkg/stringid.ValidateID` and `pkg/stringid.IsShortID` moby/moby#47995
  * runconfig: deprecate `SetDefaultNetModeIfBlank` and move `ContainerConfigWrapper` to `api/types/container` moby/moby#48007
  * runconfig: deprecate `DefaultDaemonNetworkMode` and move to `daemon/network` moby/moby#48008
  * runconfig: deprecate `opts.ConvertKVStringsToMap`. This utility is no longer used, and will be removed in the next release. moby/moby#48016
  * runconfig: deprecate `IsPreDefinedNetwork`. moby/moby#48011

#### API

  * containerd image store: `POST /images/{name}/push` now supports a `platform` parameter (JSON encoded OCI Platform type) that allows selecting a specific platform-manifest from the multi-platform image. This is experimental and may change in future API versions. moby/moby#47679

    *     *   *   *   *   *   * # containerd image store with Docker Engine

The containerd image store is the default storage backend for Docker Engine 29.0 and later on fresh installations. If you upgraded from an earlier version, your daemon continues using the legacy graph drivers (overlay2) until you enable the containerd image store.

containerd, the industry-standard container runtime, uses snapshotters instead of classic storage drivers for storing image and container data.

> Note
>
> The containerd image store is not available when using user namespace remapping (`userns-remap`). See moby#47377 for details.

## Why use the containerd image store

The containerd image store uses snapshotters to manage how image layers are stored and accessed on the filesystem. This differs from the classic graph drivers like overlay2.

The containerd image store enables:

  * Building and storing multi-platform images locally. With classic storage drivers, you need external builders for multi-platform images.

Handle Docker versions without save --platform.

Docker 27 can use the containerd image store, and the repository documents Docker 17.03 or later. When the containerd snapshotter is detected, this helper always calls docker save --platform. Docker added that option in Docker 28, so Docker 27 can fail before loading any image.

Detect support for save --platform and use a compatible fallback, or document Docker 28 as the minimum version for this workflow.

Review comment at @Makefile at line 211:
Update the image-save helper around the docker save command to avoid
unconditionally using --platform on Docker versions that do not support it;
detect option support and use a compatible fallback, while preserving the
existing platform-specific behavior when supported.
