Arif Hossen, Insurance Systems Engineer. Underwriting engines and the insurance ledger beneath them.

Arif Hossen

Insurance Systems Engineer. I build the underwriting engine and the insurance ledger beneath it: rules, referrals and premium calculation, through to financial statements that balance.

Most of my work starts as a business rule in someone else's words, an underwriter's referral criteria, a finance lead's month-end checklist, HR's payroll spreadsheet, and ends as software that people run the business on.

What I have built

An underwriting engine for an East African insurer. The rules engine and rule evaluation, questionnaires, referrals and underwriting evaluations, in one pull request of 81 files. Then premium recalculation with a breakdown, plus facultative and co-insurance actions on the quote screen, working alongside the lead engineer who built the quotations module.

The insurance ledger underneath it. An IFRS-17-style chart of accounts coded to two funds, and the general ledger that policy contributions, claim payments and treaty cessions post into, alongside the lead engineer who built the policy and claims side. I rebuilt the balance sheet, trial balance and profit and loss so they roll up, carry prior years and balance per fund.

Controls finance can trust. Periods close and lock on schedule, and reopening needs approval. Maker-checker on rates, covers, products and discounts runs through one approval engine I centralised, now driving 78 approval types.

Statutory payroll from a spreadsheet. I turned the HR team's payroll spreadsheet into a calculator with rules HR edits themselves, then wrote roughly 2,030 automated test cases for HR and payroll in five weeks. Anything that touches money ships with tests.

A secure policyholder channel. The API customers use from their phones, hardened with two-factor login, device control, abuse limits, virus-scanned uploads and expiring document links, handed to the mobile team as a published 113-path contract backed by about 750 automated checks.

Products for founders, from a blank project. A trucking dispatch and shipment-tracking MVP as the only developer. Three concurrent consumer web platforms as sole full-stack developer, including a relaunch on a live database without losing members or search rankings. A compliance-audit and recurring-inspection platform for food manufacturers, built from its first week of engineering and owned as sole engineer once the founder stepped back from code.
