feat(remote): add --params-file and --params-stdin to cliamp remote call - #641
RenanBezerraGuima wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
Params passed via --params '<json>' appear in /proc/<pid>/cmdline and in ps output, exposing potentially sensitive metadata (search queries, track titles, station URLs) to other local users. Add --params-file <path> to read parameters from a file, with - meaning stdin, and --params-stdin as a readable alias for --params-file -. The three flags are mutually exclusive. Input is limited to 1 MiB, must be a JSON object, and is rejected when stdin is a TTY. Fixes bjarneo#571

Select and validate parameter input commands.go, commands_test.go |
The command adds file and stdin parameter options. It rejects conflicting sources, terminal stdin, empty or oversized input, invalid JSON, and non-object JSON. Tests cover default parameters and input validation. |
Verify and document parameter submission commands_test.go, docs/remote-control.md |
Integration tests check that file and stdin parameters reach IPC with the requested operation. Documentation adds file and stdin examples and describes all parameter options. |

Explanation
The title names the main change: adding --params-file and --params-stdin flags to the cliamp remote call command. The raw summary, PR objectives, and linked issue
#571all center on supplying remote call parameters without exposing them in the process argument list. The title is specific and matches the changeset, so it passes.

Explanation
[
#571] requires a way to pass remote call parameters without argv exposure. The head adds--params-file <path>(with-for stdin) and--params-stdinincommands.go. Both are mutually exclusive with--params. Each input source is checked for a single JSON object. The 1 MiB limit (maxRemoteParamsSize) applies to file and stdin input. Empty input is rejected. A TTY stdin fails before any read throughterm.IsTerminal. With no flag, parameters default to{}.--paramsremains available. The previous FAIL for JSONnullis resolved.readRemoteCallParamsFromnow returns the errorparameters must be a JSON objectwhen the unmarshalled map is nil (obj == nil). This check runs after all three sources, so it covers file and stdin input as well as--params. The test table incommands_test.goadds aparams flag JSON nullcase. The maintainer's requested fixes are present.--params-stdin=falseusesc.Bool("params-stdin")and does not read stdin (tested). The--paramserror text names the JSON object requirement. The helper consolidation was optional and was not done. Integration testsTestRemoteCallParamsIntegrationcover file and stdin delivery over IPC. Limits: the TTY guard has no unit test, and no test coversnullthrough file or stdin. The shared post-read check still applies to those paths. Tests were not executed in this review. The docs change is supporting material and is not a coding requirement.

Explanation
All changes support
#571.commands.goadds the new flags, the source-selection and validation helper, the size constant, and theremoteStdintest seam.commands_test.gotests parsing and the IPC path for the new flags.docs/remote-control.mddocuments the new flags. The--paramssize check and theusagetext are small consequences of the same feature. The--paramssize check is not stated in the PR description, which mentions a limit only for file and stdin input. It stays within the issue's request for a reasonable size limit. The file path is trimmed withstrings.TrimSpace, which is a minor edge-case choice and not an unrelated change. No unrelated behavior was found in the diff.

- Line 1298: Update the `hasStdin` assignment to use the boolean value of
`params-stdin` rather than whether the flag was explicitly set. This ensures
`--params-stdin=false` neither reads stdin nor triggers the mutual-exclusion
check.
- Around line 1367-1370: Update the JSON validation in the code path tested by
TestReadRemoteCallParams to reject a nil map after unmarshalling, so JSON null
is not accepted as a parameters object. Keep the existing error behavior for
invalid inputs and add the requested “params flag JSON null” test case.

Use the boolean value of --params-stdin for input selection and reject JSON null as a parameter object. Clarify the --params error and cover both regressions. Verified with go test ./.
Problem
cliamp remote call <op> --params '{"query":"my secret playlist"}'exposes the JSON payload in/proc/<pid>/cmdlineand inpsoutput, making it visible to other local users on a shared machine.Fixes #571
Solution
Two new flags — mutually exclusive with each other and with the existing
--params:--params-file <path>-to read from stdin.--params-stdin--params-file -).The existing

Summary by CodeRabbit
remote callaccepts JSON parameters inline, from a file, or through stdin. If no parameters are provided, it uses an empty object.
