Summary

Podcast feeds now load the newest 300 playable episodes, newest first by publication date, whatever order the feed lists them in.

Before, resolve.Feed kept the first 300 episodes in feed order. Feeds don't promise an order, and long-running shows often list oldest first, so for a large feed the newest episodes were never loaded. The feed from #557 has about 2,500 episodes, oldest first, and only episodes from 2020 showed up.

  • The whole feed is read (still within the 32 MiB limit), then the episodes are sorted by publication date and the newest 300 kept.
  • The sort is stable: episodes with the same date keep their feed order, and undated episodes follow the dated ones in feed order.
  • An unparseable date counts as undated, so it sorts with the undated episodes.
  • q queues the episodes in this order, newest first.

Closes #557

How to test

  1. cliamp https://www.radiowroclaw.pl/podcasts/feed/197/Rozne-Punkty-Slyszenia
  2. The playlist starts with the newest episode (2026-10-16 today); on main it starts with 2020-01-29 and ends at 2020-12-02.
  3. go test ./resolve/ covers the order, the 300 limit on an oldest-first feed, ties and undated episodes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Enhancements
    • Podcast feeds now show up to 300 playable episodes, ordered newest first by publication date regardless of feed order. Episodes without valid publication dates follow dated episodes in feed order.
    • Queue actions in podcast search results and the subscribed-shows overlay now add episodes newest first. Existing queued tracks stay ahead, and playback starts if nothing is playing.
  • Documentation
    • Podcast documentation and feature descriptions now reflect the episode ordering and limit.

📝 Walkthrough

Podcast feed loading now selects up to 300 playable episodes and orders dated episodes newest first. Undated or unparseable episodes follow dated episodes in feed order. Tests and documentation describe the selection, ordering, body-size limit, and queue actions.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse, order, and validate feed episodes
resolve/feed.go, resolve/feed_test.go, docs/keybindings.md, docs/podcasts.md, docs/streaming.md, site/index.html
Feed sorts parsed episodes by full publication time and returns up to 300. It retains parsed episodes when the body-size limit is reached after an RSS channel is seen. Tests cover ordering, timestamp ties, undated episodes, and body-limit behavior. Documentation describes feed ordering and queue actions.

Explanation

Issue #557 requires podcast episodes to appear newest first instead of feed order. resolve.Feed reads parsed episodes, sorts playable episodes by publication time descending, preserves feed order for equal times, places undated or unparseable dates last, and returns at most 300 episodes. The tests cover oldest-first feeds, date ordering, ties, undated episodes, and the 32 MiB body limit.

Thanks for this fix. The newest-first order works well, and the tests are clear. I found 1 regression:

  1. Feed in resolve/feed.go now reads the whole feed. A feed larger than 32 MiB hits the io.LimitReader cap, and the decoder fails with unexpected EOF. On main, such a feed still loads its first 300 episodes. Can you keep the episodes parsed before the cap and sort those? When LimitedReader.N is 0, the cap stopped the read. Please add a test for a feed that hits the cap.

Then we review it again.

Thanks for the review. Fixed in 9049c95: Feed keeps a reference to the LimitedReader, and when parsing fails with N == 0 after the channel has started, it keeps the episodes parsed so far and sorts those. TestFeedBodyLimitKeepsNewestParsed covers a feed that hits the cap after 305 oldest-first episodes, and TestFeedBodyLimit now expects the episode before the cap instead of an error.

Bound retained episodes while scanning the feed.

The 32 MiB reader limits input bytes, but Feed stores every playable item before keeping 300. A feed with hundreds of thousands of compact items can exhaust the player's memory despite the body limit. Keep a bounded newest-300 selection while parsing. Preserve feed order for equal timestamps and undated items.
