Fixes #136

Problem

A JS filter callback that never settles left its request pending for the process lifetime wherever the SDK has no deadline of its own. Verified against Android SDK v7.4.2 and iOS SDK 7.0.0-beta7:

  • Android breadcrumb provider: no filter timeout (log/network have 10 s).
  • iOS log, network and breadcrumb: no timeout in the SDK; the bridge held the request and the event it retains forever.

Change

  • iOS: log, network and breadcrumb bridges arm a 9 s deadline that takes the pending request and answers the SDK's decision with nil (drop). One shared helper (BGSRNFilterDeadline) with unit tests using a fake decision block (fail closed, once only, timer cancelled on reply).
  • Android: BreadcrumbFilterBridge gets the same 9 s fail-closed deadline (injectable scheduler, tested).
  • Android log/network are unchanged: their bridges already stop waiting at 9 s and the SDK drops at 10 s.
  • Docs/comments state exactly what each platform does. Never passes the original through.

Behaviour change

Answers later than 9 s are now dropped on iOS log/network/breadcrumb and Android breadcrumb. The iOS breadcrumb SDK deliberately supports late answers, and the iOS network/log SDK would record them; a slow async filter (>9 s) that used to record now drops. This is the fail-closed behaviour #136 asks for.

Release note

Filter callbacks (log, network, breadcrumb) now have a 9 s deadline on iOS, and breadcrumb filters on Android. A callback that has not settled by then drops the item (fail closed), and a later answer is ignored. Previously iOS (and the Android breadcrumb provider) waited indefinitely and recorded late answers. If your filter does slow async work, keep it under 9 s.

Not fixable here (SDK follow-up)

The Android breadcrumb provider never recycles its pooled entry, even when the filter answers null (doLogBreadcrumb(null) returns). The wrapper deadline frees the wrapper's pending request but the pooled entry stays held for the session. That needs a fix in bugsee-android.

Tests

Both platforms refuse a reply once the deadline has passed even if the timer ran late (monotonic expiry per request). jest 2203 pass; lint/typecheck clean; Android *FilterBridgeTest (JVM); iOS BugseeRNSupport 334 pass; examples/bare iOS simulator build compiles BugseeModule.mm without warnings. Not run: a device-level hung-callback e2e.

…Android breadcrumb

The iOS SDK has no timeout for the log, network or breadcrumb filters, and
the Android SDK has none for breadcrumbs, so a JS callback that never
settled left its request (and the event it retains) pending for the life of
the process. The bridges now arm a 9 s deadline, the same number the Android
log and network bridges forget at, that drops the item and removes the
request; a late reply is a no-op. Never passes the original through.

Not fixable here: the Android breadcrumb provider never recycles its pooled
entry (not on a null answer either), SDK-side.

- iOS: one helper (BGSRNArmPendingFilterDeadline / BGSRNDropPendingFilter)
serves all three filters and is unit-tested with a fake decision block
(fail closed, once only); the module call sites and reply paths are thin
callers of it. The timer is cancelled when a reply takes the request.
- Android: Pending.deadline is volatile.
- Docs say precisely what each platform does (bridge drops at 9 s on iOS;
Android log/network bridges stop waiting at 9 s, the SDK drops at 10 s).

Code review: PR #160, fail-closed 9 s filter deadlines

I reviewed the whole diff and read the surrounding code in BugseeModule.mm, in particular the pending tables, the teardown paths and the reply methods. I did not build or run any tests; the test results below are from the PR description. This is a static review.

Findings

No P0–P2 issues found, so I posted no inline comments. I tried to break it along these lines, and each held up:

  • Reply versus deadline race.
    • On iOS, BGSRNTakePendingFilter removes the item under the lock, so only one of the reply and the timer can take it. The loser sees nil and does nothing, which means the SDK's decision block is called at most once.
    • On Android, reply and expire both go through pending.remove(...) on a ConcurrentHashMap, so the same guarantee holds.
  • Arming order.
    • Both platforms arm the deadline before the request is emitted to JS. A reply therefore can't arrive before item.deadline is set.
    • A teardown between insert and arm on iOS only means the token isn't stored. The timer then finds nothing and does nothing.
  • Failure paths on Android. If the scheduler throws (for example RejectedExecutionException), the existing catch removes the pending entry and drops the crumb. That fails closed. Emit failure and detach both cancel the deadline, and the tests cover both.
  • No pass-through. Every expiry path calls the decision or callback with nil. Nothing answers with the original item.
  • Android scheduler. It is one daemon thread with removeOnCancel, so a high crumb rate doesn't build up cancelled tasks.

P3, no action needed. The iOS BGSRNDrop*FiltersOwnedBy teardown helpers (BugseeModule.mm ~476, ~524, ~666) still call removeObjectForKey: directly. They don't use BGSRNTakePendingFilter, so they don't cancel the item's deadline. The header says "every reply path that takes the item also stops its timer", which isn't true for teardown. This is harmless: the timer fires after 9 s, finds nothing and does nothing. You could route teardown through the helper for consistency.

P3, maintainability. BGSRNTakePendingFilter, BGSRNDropPendingFilter and BGSRNArmPendingFilterDeadlineAfter (BGSRNFilterDeadline.m) reach into the pending classes by string through KVC ("deadline", "decision", "setDeadline:"). If a property were renamed, cancellation would silently stop working. The respondsToSelector: guard hides that. Nothing is broken today. A small protocol, or a typed property on a shared base class, would make the compiler enforce it.

Cosmetic. A few doc comments were re-wrapped badly:

  • BreadcrumbFilterBridge.java class javadoc, the drop at 10 s themselves.) A timer that passed the original crumb line
  • BreadcrumbFilterBridgeTest.java header
  • network/filter.ts ("…the SDK drops the event at 10 s. This function does not add a timeout…")
  • breadcrumbs/types.ts
  • index.ts (...supplies that deadline... through. A crumb)

Behaviour change, already stated in the PR. An answer later than 9 s is now dropped on iOS log/network/breadcrumb and Android breadcrumb. Because that is a visible change for slow async filters, it's worth a CHANGELOG or release-notes line. I didn't see one in the diff.

Known gap, also stated in the PR. The Android breadcrumb provider never recycles its pooled entry. That needs a fix in bugsee-android. Please keep the SDK follow-up tracked, since 40 hung or null-answered crumbs can exhaust the pool.

Test notes.

  • The iOS tests use real dispatch_after timers with 50–300 ms margins on a serial queue. Ordering is deterministic, so I'd expect them to be reliable, though they could be slow on a loaded CI runner.
  • The Android tests use an injectable scheduler, so they are deterministic.
  • There is no test that covers the BugseeModule.mm wiring itself, only the helper. The PR description already says that no device-level hung-callback e2e was run.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve once the author has taken a look at the P3 items. None of them block the merge.
  3. Most important items:
    • Add a release-note line for the 9 s late-answer behaviour change.
    • Track the Android pooled-entry SDK issue.
    • Optionally, route the iOS teardown helpers through BGSRNTakePendingFilter.
    • Optionally, replace the KVC access with a typed protocol.
  4. Positives:
    • Fail-closed everywhere, never passing the original through.
    • A single shared iOS helper, replacing three copies of the removal-and-drop code.
    • A deadline that is cancelled on every reply, emit-failure and detach path on Android.
    • Good tests for the once-only and cancel semantics.
    • Docs that say exactly what each platform does.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Network, log, and breadcrumb filtering requests now have 9-second deadlines across React Native on Android and iOS.
    • Unanswered or failed requests fail closed by dropping the affected item.
    • Late or duplicate callback responses are ignored.
    • Pending requests are cleaned up after completion, cancellation, failure, or detachment.
    • Network filtering now documents platform-specific timeout handling, including Android’s SDK-level timeout.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified timeout behavior and dropped-item handling across React Native filtering APIs.

The iOS bridge applies 9-second deadlines to network, log, and breadcrumb filter requests. The Android breadcrumb bridge applies a 9-second deadline. Expired requests are dropped, and late replies are ignored. Replies, failed delivery, detachment, and teardown cancel pending deadlines. Tests cover expiration, cancellation, cleanup, and reply handling. TypeScript documentation describes the deadlines and platform-specific timing.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 7af6a

The filter deadlines appear ready to merge after normal checks. The identified teardown race leaves only a redundant timer, not an accepted late reply.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7af6a

The deadlines improve failure containment by dropping unanswered items rather than recording their original contents. Slow filters will now lose telemetry that previously could be recorded. No new filtering bypass was established, but concurrent teardown and native SDK callback behavior remain incompletely verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated security-relevant scope is telemetry handled by the installing application's native-to-JavaScript filter bridge: iOS network events, logs, and breadcrumbs, plus Android breadcrumbs. The deadline controls whether those items are recorded; the inspected change does not establish additional cross-service, tenant, or credential authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Timeout handling does not fall back to the original telemetry item. iOS invokes the existing decision block with nil, and Android invokes the callback with null. Accepted replies still pass through the existing replacement-application checks; failed replacement drops the item rather than preserving unredacted content.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Android initiation can capture an old sink before detach and insert its pending request after detach's scan. This ownership race predates the PR, and the module and JavaScript routing files are unchanged. The added timer provides eventual cleanup after scheduling, but whether an invalidated module can deliver that stale event into a replacement runtime remains unproven; this is not retained as an introduced architecture concern.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Serialize iOS deadline metadata publication with pending-item takeover, and exercise teardown during arming. Metadata is currently written outside the table lock, allowing teardown to miss cancellation and leave a redundant timer queued. This would strengthen cleanup invariants; it is not evidence of a demonstrated normal-reply filtering bypass because production emits requests only after arming returns.

Review of PR #160 after the latest push (84f4aba): no new findings

This is a static review. I did not build or run any tests, and the test numbers come from the PR description. I re-read the Android BreadcrumbFilterBridge, the iOS BGSRNFilterDeadline helper, the BugseeModule.mm wiring and the JS docs. I also checked the earlier review against the new commits.

Earlier findings

Earlier item Status
P3: iOS BGSRNDrop*FiltersOwnedBy teardown removed entries directly and left the deadline running Fixed. Teardown now collects the owned keys under the lock, then takes each one through BGSRNTakePendingFilter, which cancels its timer.
Cosmetic: badly wrapped doc comments Looks fixed. The Android javadoc, network/filter.ts, breadcrumbs/types.ts and index.ts now read cleanly.
P3: BGSRNTakePendingFilter, BGSRNDropPendingFilter and BGSRNArmPendingFilterDeadlineAfter use KVC for deadline and decision Still there, still P3. A property rename would silently stop cancellation. Nothing is broken today, and the cost is one extra 9 s no-op timer per request. I'd add a small protocol or a shared base class when convenient.
CHANGELOG line for the 9 s late-answer change Retracted. The repo has no CHANGELOG file and release notes come from the GitHub release. Please put the behaviour change in the release notes there. The PR body already describes it.

Adversarial pass

I found no new P0–P2 issues. Each of these held up:

  • Reply versus deadline, iOS. Both paths remove the entry under the lock, so only one of them gets the decision block. A deadline timer that finds nothing is a no-op.
  • Reply versus deadline, Android. The ConcurrentHashMap.remove(id) calls in reply, expire and detach make it once-only. A reply that loses the race is a no-op.
  • Arming order. On iOS the deadline is armed after the entry is inserted and before the emit. On Android it is the same, with the deadline assigned before the emit. A reply can't arrive before the token is stored. A teardown in that window only leaves a timer that finds nothing.
  • Emit failure. Both platforms remove the entry, cancel the timer and answer nil/null. A scheduler throw on Android lands in the same catch, so it fails closed.
  • No pass-through. Every expiry path answers with nil/null, never with the original item.
  • JS manual-add flow. The reply for a deadline-dropped request is a no-op on native. The JS side's owed slot is released on settle as before, and I found no new leak there.
  • Load.
    • Android uses one daemon thread with removeOnCancel, so cancelled tasks don't accumulate.
    • On iOS, dispatch_after does not remove a cancelled block early. At a high log rate you hold roughly 9 s × rate of small blocks (table, lock and request id) until they fire. It's bounded and small, so I'm not reporting it.
  • Docs. The Android network and log "bridge stops waiting at 9 s, SDK drops at 10 s" wording matches NetworkFilterBridge.BORROW_MS and LogFilterBridge.BORROW_MS, both 9 000 ms.

Known gaps, unchanged and already stated in the PR

  • The Android breadcrumb provider never recycles its pooled entry, so the SDK needs a fix in bugsee-android. Please keep that tracked. About 40 hung or null-answered crumbs can exhaust the pool.
  • No device-level hung-callback e2e was run, and there is no test for the BugseeModule.mm wiring itself, only for the helper.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve. Nothing blocks the merge.
  3. Most important items, all non-blocking:
    • Put the 9 s late-answer behaviour change in the release notes.
    • Track the Android pooled-entry SDK issue.
    • Optionally replace the KVC access with a typed protocol.
  4. Positives:
    • The deadline is fail-closed everywhere and never passes the original through.
    • One shared iOS helper, now used by the teardown paths too.
    • The timer is cancelled on every reply, emit-failure and detach path.
    • The tests cover once-only and cancel semantics.
    • The docs match what each platform does.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Enforce the deadline when taking a pending filter.

If the expiration block waits behind work on its queue, a JavaScript reply received after nine seconds can still pass through BGSRNTakePendingFilter. The network, log, and breadcrumb reply methods then apply the reply and call the SDK decision block. This violates the documented fail-closed deadline.

Record a monotonic expiration time when arming the request. At the shared take boundary, remove expired items, call their decision with nil, and return nil. This fixes all three filter paths without relying on the expiration block running on time.

Review of PR #160 after 3417c20: the Android race is fixed, iOS still has the same gap

This is a static review. I did not build or run any tests. I re-read BreadcrumbFilterBridge.java, its test, BGSRNFilterDeadline.m, the BugseeModule.mm diff and the iOS test names.

Earlier findings

Item Status
Android: a late scheduler lets reply accept an answer after 9 s (CodeRabbit, 13:43) Fixed. Pending.expiresAtNanos is set in ask. reply claims the entry, cancels the timer, then drops if nanoClock.getAsLong() - expiresAtNanos >= 0 (BreadcrumbFilterBridge.java:227). The subtraction form is overflow-safe. Tests aReplyAfterTheDeadlineIsRefusedEvenIfTheTimerHasNotRun and aReplyJustInsideTheDeadlineIsAccepted cover both sides of the boundary.
iOS teardown helpers bypassed the shared take Fixed in 84f4aba.
KVC use in the iOS helper Still P3, unchanged.
Release note for the 9 s late-answer change Still open and non-blocking. The repo has no CHANGELOG.

New finding

P3 / Low: iOS doesn't enforce the deadline when a reply claims the entry, so it is now inconsistent with Android.

  • Location: packages/react-native/ios/Support/Sources/BugseeRNSupport/BGSRNFilterDeadline.m:20-35 (BGSRNTakePendingFilter).
  • Problem: The take only removes the entry and cancels the token. It doesn't check elapsed time. Whether a reply is accepted depends on whether the dispatch_after block has run, not on whether 9 s have passed. This is the same gap CodeRabbit raised in its outside-diff comment.
  • Impact: The docs in BugseeModule.mm and the JS types say a reply after BGSRNFilterDeadlineMs is a no-op. If the timer block runs late, a reply that arrives after 9 s can still be applied and sent to the SDK. Android now refuses it.
  • Scenario: The timer runs on dispatch_get_global_queue(QOS_CLASS_UTILITY, 0), so thread starvation or heavy load can delay it. A JS reply arriving in that window takes the entry first and gets recorded.
  • Why only P3: The late value is the filter's own redacted output, so it isn't an unfiltered-data bypass. The delay needs a starved utility queue. Accepting late answers was the old behaviour.
  • Fix: Store a monotonic expiry on each pending item when arming. For example, use clock_gettime_nsec_np(CLOCK_UPTIME_RAW), which stays consistent with dispatch_time. In BGSRNTakePendingFilter, treat an item past its expiry as expired: remove it, call decision(nil), and return nil. Add a test with a deliberately blocked queue and an overdue reply. CodeRabbit's diff is a workable start, but compare against a monotonic clock value rather than casting a dispatch_time_t to NSNumber, since dispatch_time_t is not a wall-clock timestamp. If you'd rather not add this, say in the PR text and the comments that iOS enforces the deadline on a best-effort basis.

Known gaps, unchanged and already stated in the PR

  • The Android breadcrumb provider never recycles its pooled entry, so the SDK needs a fix in bugsee-android. Please keep it tracked.
  • There is no test of the BugseeModule.mm wiring itself, and no device-level hung-callback e2e.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve. Nothing blocks the merge. I'd either apply the iOS expiry check for parity with Android, or relax the wording.
  3. Most important items:
    • Check expiry when an iOS reply takes the entry (P3).
    • Add the release-note line for the 9 s late-answer behaviour.
    • Track the Android pooled-entry SDK issue.
  4. Positives:
    • Both platforms are fail-closed and never pass the original through.
    • The Android race is fixed with an injectable clock and boundary tests.
    • The iOS helper is shared, and its teardown paths now cancel timers.

Review of PR #160 after 7af6a44: the iOS expiry gap is closed, no new findings

This is a static review. I did not build or run any tests. The test results come from the PR description. I re-read BGSRNFilterDeadline.m, the iOS test file, the three reply methods and arm sites in BugseeModule.mm, and BreadcrumbFilterBridge.java.

7af6a44 is an empty commit. Its message says the change was included in the preceding merge commit, so I reviewed the code at HEAD instead.

Earlier findings

Item Status
Android: reply accepted an answer after 9 s if the scheduler ran late Fixed in 3417c20. Pending.expiresAtNanos is checked in reply after the claim, using an overflow-safe subtraction.
iOS: BGSRNTakePendingFilter didn't check elapsed time, so a late timer block let a late reply through (P3) Fixed. BGSRNArmPendingFilterDeadlineAfter stores expiresAt on the item. It uses CLOCK_UPTIME_RAW, which is the same time base as dispatch_time(DISPATCH_TIME_NOW, …). BGSRNTakeRaw reports overdue. An overdue item is answered nil and BGSRNTakePendingFilter returns nil, so the reply call sites see item.decision == nil and return. testAReplyPastTheDeadlineIsRefusedEvenIfTheTimerBlockHasNotRun covers this by blocking the queue, and testAReplyInsideTheDeadlineIsStillTaken covers the other side.
iOS teardown helpers bypassed the shared take Fixed in 84f4aba.
KVC use in the iOS helper (deadline, expiresAt, decision) Still P3. A property rename would silently disable cancellation or the expiry check. The new expiresAt adds one more string-keyed field. A small protocol or a shared base class would let the compiler check it.
Release note for the 9 s late-answer change Still open and non-blocking. The repo has no CHANGELOG, so this belongs in the GitHub release notes.

Adversarial pass on the new code

I found no P0–P2 issues. Each of these held up:

  • Ordering inside arm. expiresAt is stored after deadline, and both are stored after the entry is inserted and before the emit, so a reply can't observe a half-armed item. If teardown takes the item in that window, expiresAt is nil, so it is not treated as overdue. That path answers nil anyway, so the result is the same.
  • Race between a refused reply and the timer. Both take the item under the lock, so only one gets it. The loser sees nil and does nothing, which keeps the decision once-only.
  • Teardown and emit-failure. BGSRNDropPendingFilter ignores the overdue flag and always answers nil, which is correct for these paths.
  • Clock consistency. CLOCK_UPTIME_RAW and dispatch_time(DISPATCH_TIME_NOW, …) both stop during sleep, so the stored expiry and the timer measure the same time.
  • Fail-closed. Every path calls the decision with nil. Nothing passes the original through.

Known gaps, unchanged and already stated in the PR

  • The Android breadcrumb provider never recycles its pooled entry, so the SDK needs a fix in bugsee-android. Please keep it tracked. About 40 hung or null-answered crumbs can exhaust the pool.
  • There is no test of the BugseeModule.mm wiring itself, and no device-level hung-callback e2e.

Summary

  1. Overall risk: Low.
  2. Merge recommendation: Approve. Both platforms now enforce the 9 s cutoff when a reply claims the entry, and nothing blocks the merge.
  3. Most important items, all non-blocking:
    • Put the 9 s late-answer behaviour change in the release notes.
    • Track the Android pooled-entry SDK issue.
    • Optionally replace the KVC access with a typed protocol.
  4. Positives:
    • The Android and iOS behaviour now match.
    • The expiry is checked against a monotonic clock, not the timer block.
    • The new tests cover a starved queue and the in-time case.
