feat: add npm/GitHub plugins with sandboxed and trusted execution - #542
Third-party tools currently need core command changes or must guess offckb’s environment. Add a generic plugin host with static package declarations, versioned context and owned foreground execution. Users can install an npm package or GitHub repository and immediately run its declared command; application adapters remain independently maintained and released.
These are placeholder package/repository names. Packages must implement the offckb declaration and provide a built JavaScript entry. Local plugin link/list/unlink remain available for development; list includes execution mode and resolved npm version/Git commit.
Install into a fresh managed directory using a pinned external npm CLI. Validate declarations, entry paths, engines, grants and command conflicts before an atomic registry switch. Pre-commit update failures preserve the previous package; ownership transfers immediately at registry rename, so later lock/temporary/old-package cleanup errors cannot delete the new registered package; live tools cannot be replaced/removed. Local links are never deleted by removal. Updates require explicit execution-mode/capability grants again.
Disable install/build scripts by default, independently of trusted runtime execution. GitHub source builds can use npm’s standard prepare hook with explicit --trust --allow-scripts; this enables dependency scripts too, with the caller’s permissions/environment outside the runtime sandbox. Rollback cannot undo their external side effects. Installation requires Node 20.17+ (20.x) or 22.9+, the optional npm dependency and Git for GitHub sources. Pin npm 11.21.1 because the Node 20/npm 10 fixture executed Git preparation despite --ignore-scripts; never fall back to ambient npm. The npm dependency adds approximately 17 MB unpacked.
Default execution uses an OS sandbox on macOS/Linux, requiring Node 22.21+ (22.x) or 24.5+ and the backend prerequisites. Explicit per-package --trust runs natively on Windows/macOS/Linux without WSL or sandbox setup; linked trusted packages support Node 20+. Trusted execution has the current user’s OS permissions, without filesystem/network isolation. Sandbox failure never silently enables trusted execution.
Persist trust against canonical directory and package name/version; changes require reauthorization. Filter runtime environment credentials/preload hooks and export minimal context. Capabilities grant bounded host interfaces: read-only RPC, project deployment reads and authenticated loopback HTTP. Original RPC credentials stay in the host. In trusted mode these grants cannot restrict independent OS access. Plugin stdout belongs to the delegated tool; argv, exit status and signals propagate.
Retain data/cache by the SHA-256 of the full package name, independent of command/version/installation ID. Removing A and installing a different package B with the same command gives B separate storage. Existing command-keyed experimental directories are never automatically adopted; package names are a local namespace, not publisher authentication. Bound each read-RPC broker to 16 connections, four concurrent requests and a five-second total lifetime; abort upstream reads on disconnect/shutdown and reject excess work rather than queue it.
Core commands win collisions and invalid registrations remain removable. Listings diagnose unsupported sandbox platform/Node requirements without loading the optional sandbox runtime. Foreground cleanup targets only the owned current child/group; Windows uses live-tree taskkill /T /F, not stored/exited PIDs. Synthetic fixtures exercise the host without application-specific code, upstream pins or preferred plugins.
Limits: no background services, inter-plugin dependencies, automatic upgrades, resource quotas or native Windows OS sandbox. Crash recovery is manual and Windows process-tree cleanup is best effort, not Job Object containment. Trust records are not content signatures; same-version package/dependency changes remain possible. The pinned sandbox runtime still uses Zod 3 with GHSA-mrhx-c7xc-m3w5; only host-generated policy is parsed before plugin startup, but the dependency is not patched. GitHub repositories must themselves implement the plugin package/build contract; arbitrary tool repositories are not adapted automatically.
Local full coverage suite: 63 suites, 634 passed, 7 platform skips. Typecheck, build, formatting and diff checks pass. Lint has one pre-existing warning in src/node/install.ts.
Added regressions for package storage across remove/reuse/upgrade, atomic ownership transfer, injected close/unlink/temporary/old-package cleanup failures, pre-commit rollback, sandbox listing diagnostics, RPC concurrency/connection caps, slow headers/bodies, stalled upstreams and shutdown cancellation.
Native macOS production sandbox smoke passes, including denial of retained A data to a different package B using the same command and successful same-package upgrade. Production trusted-mode and real local npm/Git installer smoke also pass on Node 20.20.2. Fixtures do not validate public GitHub authentication/availability or real application integrations.
Current-head CI is all green. The sandbox matrix now includes Ubuntu / Node 22.21.0 in addition to macOS/Linux / Node 24. Runs: Changeset Check; Plugin sandbox; Nodejs CI; Test.

Added experimental local plugin support, including commands to link, list, and unlink plugins, and to run linked tools through the CLI.
Plugins can receive devnet context and forward their output through the CLI. A prototype Explorer adapter and context-probe example are available.
Documentation
Added setup guidance, usage instructions, and limitations for local plugins and the Explorer prototype.
Bug Fixes
Improved plugin command argument handling and shutdown cleanup.
The CLI adds local plugin linking, listing, discovery, and foreground execution. It validates plugin metadata, provides a versioned invocation context, and manages plugin process shutdown. An Explorer adapter and an opt-in smoke test demonstrate the plugin interface. Registry installation and background plugins remain deferred.

Summary
Plugin contracts and lifecycle src/plugins/manifest.ts, src/plugins/store.ts, src/plugins/context.ts, src/scripts/private.ts, tests/plugins.test.ts
The plugin system validates package metadata and Node compatibility, stores links with locking and run leases, and writes temporary context files. Tests cover manifest, registry, and context behavior.
The CLI registers plugin management commands and delegates linked plugin commands. The runner starts a child process, forwards shutdown signals, and releases its lease. Tests cover argument forwarding, JSON handling, exit status, and cleanup.
Explorer adapter experiment examples/plugins/*, scripts/prepare-explorer-prototype.mjs, scripts/plugin-smoke.mjs, .gitignore
The Explorer adapter validates devnet context and RPC identity before starting the loopback server. The preparation script adapts a pinned checkout, and the smoke test exercises plugin and Explorer startup and cleanup.
Plugin documentation and release note README.md, docs/plugins.md, docs/plugin-system-proposal.md, .changeset/plugin-system-proposal.md
The documentation describes local plugin commands, protocol details, the Explorer experiment, and deferred features. The changeset declares a minor CLI release.

Plugin shutdown may require manual lease recovery, and Explorer preparation does not yet ensure the documented source revision. Address these before relying on the experimental workflow.
