Replay settled provider-executed decisions returned by the context handler.
When the context handler returns a settled provider-executed approval that was not in stored or search, finishApprovals keeps its tool-call but strips its tool-approval-response. The replay loop reads only plan.replay, so the final model prompt contains the provider-executed call without its decision. Add settled provider decisions from returned to the replay map before stripping the returned history.

why are tool request/approvals being treated differently than other message content? It seems like there's a general pattern of some AI providers having specific semantics about what a valid set of messages looks like (e.g. requiring a tool call to immediately precede a tool response, or that all requests are handled).
- One option is to make it structurally impossible to represent invalid states, at the cost of internalizing all of those constraints from various different providers, and as those constraints change over time, trying to figure out whether to fix past messages.
- Another option is to just filter them out or resolve them dynamically: e.g. removing un-approved tool calls dynamically, or adding a dynamic rejection of them.
- The approach here seems to be to not allow customizing the context as it pertains to tool approval: is that due to a lack of trust? Or because we're trying to enforce the structure at rest, or have a more predictable way to resolve them dynamically or both?

this seems a little strange to me. I thought the context handler was supposed to have full control over the context. e.g. if users are trying to log all of the messages that are sent to the LLM, they will no longer have a complete picture in this callback?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Right, it misses them today. Exploring giving the handler the full context and resolving approvals after it returns, though the continued decisions would still be appended after it.

what does "As for the AI SDK, an approval decision answers its call" mean?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
A saved approval decision counts as the call's answer, like in the AI SDK, so the call isn't dropped as orphaned.
|
Approval parts aren't context to the SDK, they're commands: it runs the decisions in the final tool message and strips requests and local decisions before the provider call. A handler that moves them can run a tool twice or fail after one ran. Enforcing structure at rest means internalizing every provider's rules, and we kept hitting new ones. Resolving dynamically seems better: the handler shapes everything, then we drop unanswered calls, put results next to their calls, and append the stored decisions being continued. Meant to open this as a draft. Converting now. |
Fixes #411. #404 checked a context handler's output against only the messages the agent fetched, so a handler returning older history looked like it was adding earlier turns' approvals, and the next continuation threw. Approval requests and decisions are now protocol, not context: they're stripped from what the handler sees and returns, and the stored call and decision being continued are appended last, so only saved decisions can run a tool. Pending approvals are now left out of other generations' context instead of auto-denied.
