feat: use installed wheels offline, quieter clang-tidy output, repair split --checks - #302
Conversation
… split --checks - Use a clang-format/clang-tidy wheel that is already installed in the hook environment (e.g. from additional_dependencies) when it matches --version, or when no --version is given, without contacting PyPI. The hook now works offline and on pre-commit.ci, and an unpinned run no longer upgrades the installed wheel. - Pass -quiet to clang-tidy and drop status lines such as "522 warnings generated." and "[1/2] Processing file ..." unless --verbose is given. - Join --checks/--warnings-as-errors lists that YAML split at the commas, remove quotes inside the value, and explain that --checks=.clang-tidy has no effect. The notes are added to the hook output.
On macOS without a compilation database, clang-tidy cannot find stdio.h, so testing/main.c always reports "Error while processing".

- Line 218: Update the clang-tidy execution flow in the serial and parallel
invocation paths to use the executable path returned by the resolver instead of
the bare “clang-tidy” name. Preserve the resolved-path behavior when reusing the
installed wheel, including environments where PATH ordering differs or the
scripts directory is absent.
- Line 218: Update run_clang_format to use the executable path returned by
_find_installed_wheel when constructing the subprocess command, rather than
resolving clang-format by name; preserve the existing behavior for cases where
no wheel path is found.
- Line 177: Update the executable resolution around shutil.which in the tool
resolver so a process-PATH fallback is not accepted solely with the wheel
metadata version. Verify the fallback executable’s actual version against the
requested version before assigning it that version; otherwise return None or
continue through normal resolution, while preserving reuse of the
wheel-installed executable when it is verified in the scripts directory.

- Accept an installed wheel only when its executable is in this environment's scripts directory; a tool elsewhere on PATH can be a different version. - After pip installs a wheel, prefer the executable in the scripts directory. - Both hooks run the resolved executable path instead of the bare name.

importlib.metadata.version() parses the wheel's whole METADATA file, which CodSpeed counted as a large regression on every hook run. Listing site-packages for <name>-<version>.dist-info is about ten times cheaper, and the environment paths are looked up once per process.

Three small fixes found while measuring how the clang-tidy hook behaves in real configurations.
1. Use the installed wheel, work offline
Before, every run asked pypi.org which version to use:
--versionset and no network, the hook failed even when the right wheel was already installed (pre-commit.ci runs hooks without network access).--version, each run installed the newest wheel. A run in an environment that hadclang-tidy==21.1.6fromadditional_dependenciesupgraded it to 23.1.3.Now the hook first looks for a wheel already installed in the hook environment. It finds the version from the
<name>-<version>.dist-infodirectory in site-packages, and it needs the wheel's executable in that environment's scripts directory. It uses that wheel without contacting PyPI when it matches--version(exact or prefix), or when no--versionis given. Otherwise nothing changes: the version is resolved on PyPI and installed. Both hooks now run the executable they resolved, instead of whatever
clang-formatorclang-tidycomes first onPATH.The README gets an "Offline and pre-commit.ci" section that installs the tool through
additional_dependencies.Behavior changes:
--version, the hook keeps the wheel it installed on the first run until pre-commit rebuilds the environment, for example after arevoradditional_dependencieschange, or afterpre-commit clean.--version=21keeps an installed 21.x wheel instead of moving to a newer 21.x patch.2. Quieter clang-tidy output
Unless
--verboseis given, the hook now does two things:-quietto clang-tidy, unless the user already set-quietor--quiet.N warnings generated.(clang-tidy 18 and older print it even with-quiet)Suppressed N warnings (...)Use -header-filter=...[1/N] Processing file ...Diagnostics,
Error while processing ...and the compile database messages stay. With--verbose, the output is unchanged.3. Repair the old README patterns
In a sample of 24 public configurations that use this clang-tidy hook, 13 still carry patterns from the README before #285:
[...]. YAML splits[--checks=-*,bugprone-*]at the commas. clang-tidy then treatsbugprone-*as a source file and fails on every commit withno such file or directory. The hook now joins the pieces again, for both--checks=and--warnings-as-errors=, and adds a note with the quoted form.--checks="boost-*", the quotes reach clang-tidy as part of the glob, so the glob matches nothing. The hook removes them and adds a note. Those checks now actually run, so affected users may see new warnings.--checks.--checks=.clang-tidy(and the.clang-ditytypo) has no effect, since clang-tidy reads.clang-tidyby itself. The hook leaves the option in place and adds a note. The notes are appended to the hook output, which pre-commit shows when the hook fails.
testing/*.yamlused--checks=.clang-tidytoo, so it is removed there.Tests
uv run pytest: 278 passed (211 before), with new unit tests for all three parts and one end-to-end test that runs the real tool with a split--checks.bash testing/run.sh: 5 passed, 0 failed.unshare -n, under both pre-commit and prek, using--version=21,additional_dependencies: [clang-format==21.1.8]/[clang-tidy==21.1.6], and an unquoted--checks=-*,readability-braces-around-statements:main(20a6884)Could not find any stable versions of clang-format on PyPICould not find any stable versions of clang-tidy on PyPIreadability-braces-around-statementswarning, plus a note about the split--checks
