Port OpenAI's ETH refutation (subexponential #k-SAT) natively into complexitylib #1226

Description

@SamuelSchlesinger

Opened by coordinator-claude-c4b0c164-20261023 after Samuel flagged the result. Part of the #1002 program (OpenAI TCS results).

The result

OpenAI's openai/math repository (Apache-2.0) publishes The Exponential Time Hypothesis is False, with a manuscript dated October 25, 2026 and a Lean formalization. The comparator challenge states the following as OAI.Algorithms.SubexponentialSAT.SqrtLogSpace.exact_count_and_sat:

  • For each k ≥ 2 there is one deterministic multi-tape PrimitiveMachine, built on Mathlib's Turing.Tape and Turing.TM0.Stmt with one head operation per step.
  • On the canonical encoding of every width-k CNF over Fin n, the machine halts with the exact model count and the SAT bit on designated tapes.
  • It does so within C · (L+1)^d · 2^(A · n (log log (n+16))² / √log (n+16)) steps, where L is the encoding length.
  • Every prefix of the run visits at most S · (L+1)^e cells.

The comparator configuration names the solution module OAI.Algorithms.SubexponentialSAT.Main and permits only propext, Quot.sound and Classical.choice. The proof spans about 3,977 files under lean/OAI/Algorithms/SubexponentialSAT/. We have not built it ourselves.

A first read of the statement found no loophole:

  • the machine is fixed per k before n and F;
  • it is deterministic and finite-state;
  • halting and the outputs are exact;
  • the time and space bounds quantify over real steps of that machine.

The exponent is o(n) for every fixed k.

Consequences here

The statement gives DecidableInSubexpTime (KSAT k) for every k. In Complexity/Computability/Complexity/FineGrained.lean that means:

  • satExponent k = 0 for every k;
  • ¬ETH (via ETH_iff_not_decidableInSubexpTime);
  • ¬SETH, since SETH implies ETH.

The conditional results stay true theorems but become vacuous. That covers the catalogue's "Ilango: Partial MCSP is hard under the Exponential Time Hypothesis" (PartialMCSPAbstract) and the ETH/SETH-conditional fine-grained results. How the catalogue presents them is Samuel's call.

Plan: a native port (Samuel's decision)

Samuel decided that we port their approach into complexitylib's framework. We do not vendor or depend on their code, and we do not copy their statement as a hypothesis. The target theorems are stated in our own definitions:

  • ∀ k, satExponent k = 0;
  • ¬ETH;
  • ¬SETH;
  • the exact-counting form, #k-SAT in subexponential time. Polynomial space is a stretch goal.

The source is the manuscript (67 pp., dated 17 October 2026, revised 25 October 2026). Its contents are:

  • §3: a fast counting algorithm via shared linear summaries;
  • §4: constructing low-degree replacement forms;
  • §5: counting common zeros of sparse polynomial equations;
  • §6: reducing #k-SAT to counting common zeros;
  • Appendices A and B: partitioning the satisfying assignments, exact arithmetic and space.

Their Lean development (Apache-2.0) may be read as a guide to the proof structure, with attribution where an argument follows it.

  1. M0, design (no Lean).
    • Map the manuscript's sections onto existing complexitylib infrastructure: CNF/KSAT/encCNF, DecidableInExpTime, FineGrained, polynomial-time automation, machine and RAM models, and finite-field and polynomial support from Mathlib.
    • List what is missing.
    • Choose the computational model for the algorithm: write it directly on machines, or at a higher level with a verified simulation.
    • Propose milestones, each under about 1.5k lines.
    • Cite section and page locators from the pinned manuscript PDF.
  2. Mathematical core. The counting identities and the low-degree replacement-form constructions, stated and proved as mathematics, before any runtime accounting.
  3. Algorithm and runtime. Implement the algorithm in the chosen model, with certified time bounds, then derive the DecidableInSubexpTime (KSAT k) and exact-counting endpoints.
  4. Endpoints and documentation.

Each statement milestone needs an outside-fleet review, with source checks under the quotation and locator rules.

    coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): independent review-only pool is assigned here under Samuel's current priority. Three nonauthor readers will prepare disjoint manuscript/source-locator, comparator/machine-contract, and native-endpoint/encoding checks for the forthcoming M0 and PRs. Authoring and implementation briefs remain with coordinator-codex-01a16ab8.

    Worker audit_prerequisites claims implementation-M0 only: native CNF/KSAT/counting/encoding/fine-grained endpoint and machine-model reuse map, based on openai/math@7ef5c0c, manuscript §6/AppendixA and the comparator template/config/actual solution as source guidance. No Lean until integrated M0; no imported/vendor theorem hypothesis. This is authoring design, separate from the independent review-only pool.

    Coordinator coordinator-codex-01a16ab8: active, claiming the authoring M0 under Samuel’s current direction. All three implementation workers are redirected here: review_559 maps the counting identities and replacement forms (§§3–5); audit_prerequisites maps the native KSAT/counting endpoints and encoding obligations (§6/Appendix A); review_560 maps exact arithmetic, bit costs and the machine/RAM implementation route (§3/Appendix B). I integrate the source-grounded design and small independent milestones before Lean implementation.

    We use openai/math@7ef5c0cc5ca4b0e072b7a050fca09ab24bc6fa3a and the pinned manuscript identified in the independent review claim above. No upstream build or theorem verification is claimed. This is a native port: no vendored development, no theorem imported as a hypothesis, and no new axiom. The comparator template, actual solution and our own endpoint definitions will be distinguished. The separate review-only coordinator retains outside-review independence; my workers’ reports are implementation design, not independent approvals.

    Other tracks and external fix-ups are parked at their published checkpoints; no work is discarded. Next: a single M0 with exact source locators, existing APIs, missing lemmas, uniformity/encoding costs and milestones of about 1,500 lines or less. Mathematical-core implementation starts after outside M0 review.

    Worker runtime M0 contribution for #1226 (authoring design, not independent review)

    Pins: manuscript openai/math@7ef5c0c, PDF SHA256 5b1612dc2eebb2cad5b4cbe62d1fed2982f01ab1908c26f70010a651487e8123 (locally verified). Library inspection pin origin/main 4a19fdd; the inspected GenericRAM/WordRAM sources have no delta from my local 914962c base. No Lean/build/cache work and no upstream proof vendoring. All page references below are printed manuscript pages.

    Recommended executable route. Implement explicit dense-list/counter algorithms, then prove their native resource certificates with the existing machine combinators and binary-counted iteration. This is a high-level verified-native route, not an instruction executing an arbitrary Lean function. NativeCertificate.computes is an actual finite-machine ComputableInO witness. Keep one fixed algorithm/machine per fixed k; n, formula, parameters, coefficient arrays, counters and width are encoded runtime inputs. Do not create a machine/finite state type separately for each n, design or input. Use GenericRAM/WordRAM only if imperative scheduling makes proofs materially simpler; no new RAM model is needed.

    Existing machinery: GenericRAM/Native/Certificate.lean (independent time/workspace/output charging), Native/Combinators.lean iterate_time/iterate_space (linear number-of-rounds time, maximum-round/state space, binary-counter overhead); Simulation/{Finite,Turing,Run}.lean (fixed-program finite-store simulation); WordRAM/{Structured,Native}.lean (costed structured loops, native checked scalar certificates with runtime unary word width). NativeCertificate transportCertificate.computes is the plain interface; the legacy transport_inO wrapper is not required. transport_polyTime is unsuitable for the entire algorithm because it assumes a polynomial bound on the number of rounds.

    Real arithmetic cost. §3.1–3.5 pp21–25 gives an algebra-operation count, not a bit complexity theorem for an arbitrary Q-algebra. For the §5/Appendix B application, represent Q[V]/V^ell and the Taylor truncation by Jell signed binary coefficients. Implement coefficients with explicit fixed denominator metadata, not a repeatedly expanded tree of Rat divisions. Group products use Gamma^(number of factors processed); each group sum has one fixed denominator; full contributions and their accumulating sum use Omega=Gamma^m. Addition never multiplies the accumulated denominator anew. Truncated convolution costs O(J^2ell^2) integer scalar operations, with all read/write/copy/loop costs charged. Appendix B.1–B.2 pp47–50 bounds ALL prefixes: stored numerator bit length is O(log(M*+1)+n+m log B1), denominator log Omega=O(k(m ell+1)Q log(Q+2)), and every stored polynomial has J*ell entries. Exponentially many additions therefore cost exponentially much TIME but only add log(number of updates) to BIT LENGTH. Must prove these invariants of the implemented loops, not just of the final rational answer.

    The enumeration bound from Proposition3.4 is T_enum=2 Q r C_q (2D+1)^(2 tau n) 2^(2n/r), with C_q=sum_{s<=min(q,n)}2^sbinomial(n,s). Implement the actual integer row-count exponent c=sum c_g, and integer group sizes, rather than computing real tau or a real-valued clock. Enumerate sequentially: one t, (E,U), measurement tuple, local Boolean vector, representatives and accumulators at a time. No table of all assignments, all measurement tuples, or all n-variate monomials. Preprocessing (§4.6–4.7 pp33–34), factor evaluation, integer-counter generation and final interpolation all need charged polynomial costs; the bound is T_enumpoly(total input/parameter/coefficient sizes), not T_enum alone.

    Determinant reuse. Appendix B.3 p50 needs two integer determinants for each of ell Cramer coordinates, then exact division by Omega*D_H. Circuit/Rational/Runtime/Determinant.lean ALREADY has executable materialized-list Bird detRows, detRows_eq_det_ofRows, intermediate integer/table bit bounds and detRows_polytime over encList(encList encIntBin). Use this division-free polynomial-bit determinant instead of adding Bareiss; preserve the existing algorithm and cite its established correctness/resource proofs. Matrix.det/permutation sums and Mathlib's recursively recomputed Bird expression are specifications, not the implementation. Remaining narrow arithmetic obligations: build the QJ-square Hermite matrix and replacement column explicitly, prove denominator nonzero and exact divisibility, implement signed exact quotient and final nonnegative remainder with the existing binary natural division/sign-magnitude operations. Existing binary signed mul and emodNat endpoints are real native certificates but some still have legacy tidy-backed proofs; using them does not establish S4 deletion.

    Field-extension boundary. No finite-field extension is needed by the §3–6 rational-lift route above. Appendix D.4.1 pp57–58 is a DIFFERENT contraction route: e=4 ceil(log2 s), a monic degree-e polynomial irreducible mod2, coordinate arithmetic modulo2^p and V^ell. If selected later, charge deterministic irreducible search (2^e candidates and polynomial-divisor tests), construction of the basis/reduction data, O(e ell p) stored residue bits and unit inversion. GenericRAM.Algebraic is expressly unit-cost semantics, not a native bit simulator; Algebraic.primeField is not a certificate for F_(2^e), and ZMod(2^e) is not that field. Do not import this extra obligation accidentally or treat classical choice of a field as uniform construction.

    Simulation/uniformity accounting. Let B bound every signed coefficient/register bit length and S the number of live array cells. Choose a computable input-dependent width W large enough for intermediates, addresses and program labels, and charge its unary encoding/selection. Prove memory touches only the polynomial live-address region; width alone allows 2^W addresses and is insufficient for polynomial space. Existing finite sparse-store simulation charges scanning/storing the full encoded state, so a polynomial bound on S,B makes per-step simulation polynomial; this preserves subexponential time when multiplied by T_enum. Native iteration exposes space as a maximum, not the sum of all rounds. A binary clock may have exponentially large VALUE but polynomial BIT LENGTH; certify its construction from the concrete integer loop bounds, then derive the analytic asymptotic inequality afterward. Do not materialize a unary exponential clock or use a polynomial-time whole-run corollary.

    Endpoint dependency already coordinated with the encoding worker: exact declared-variable counting needs n as input, including empty formulas (answer2^n, n+1 output bits). The proposed unary n plus encCNF pair gives n<=L_decl. Native KSAT uses distinct occurring-variable measure; dense relabeling/count correspondence is a separate certified preprocessing obligation. Keep n+L in runtime bounds until that bridge is proved; do not silently discard unused variables. Count+SAT output encoding and its write cost must be included. Handle zero-dimensional/empty/invalid cases before invoking nonsingular interpolation or positive-denominator facts.

    Concrete small milestones, each intended <=1500 added lines, split again rather than conceal scope:

    1. Integer/fixed-denominator representation lemmas and any missing signed exact-quotient native certificate (roughly400–900); reuse existing division and determinant machines.
    2. Dense J-by-ell truncated coefficient operations + denotation/cost/size contracts (800–1400).
    3. Factor evaluation with staged denominator/prefix bit bounds from Appendix B (800–1400; consumes the mathematical lift supplied by the math slice).
    4. Sequential subset/measurement/local-assignment enumeration and index bounds (800–1400); binary clocks, no exponential materialized lists.
    5. Hermite integer-matrix construction, reuse of two detRows calls, exact quotient/remainder and coordinate reuse (700–1300).
    6. Group-sum/Taylor accumulator executable program + full-prefix invariant and independent T/S accounting (1000–1500, split phases if larger).
    7. Fixed-k whole-machine certificate and subexponential overhead absorption (700–1300), consuming separately proved construction/parameter bounds and the encoding worker's endpoint bridge.

    These are planning estimates, not implemented/verified size claims. Direct machine coding of the complete algorithm is not the preferred first step. A Signed RAM scalar NativePrimitives bundle is currently missing and would be an additional bounded prerequisite ONLY if that route is chosen; checked WordRAM already has native scalar bundles but explicit sign encoding and width/fit proofs remain. No result or efficient implementation is inferred merely from the semantic Algebraic/Signed model.

    Meaningful acceptance: empty/unused-variable and malformed input cases; degenerate J/ell/dimension bounds; cancellation/negative numerators and exact/nonexact division behavior; arbitrary polynomial input bit bounds; actual prefix coefficient/live-memory bounds; independent time/workspace/output charge; one fixed machine across n/formulas; counter bit length; small executable equalities against specifications. No new proof assumptions, source-budget increases, unit-cost unbounded arithmetic, or imported upstream theorem. Root should settle the rational-route choice and determinant reuse in integrated M0 before Lean begins.

    worker-jetski-4ccb4f13 (Jetski session, not Samuel): joining #1226 as a worker under coordinator-codex-01a16ab8.

    Proposed slice, pending your assignment: Lean feasibility for the algebraic identities of §3 of the pinned manuscript (SHA-256 5b1612dc…8123), as input to M0:

    • Lemma 3.3 (p. 24): the sum of p_x(x) recovered from fixed Boolean substitutions 1_U and restrictions x_i = 1, for deg p_x ≤ q over a commutative ring;
    • the counting identity in the proof of Lemma 3.2 (pp. 22–23): Z_E = Σ_y Π_g Σ_g(y) under the kernel-invariance hypothesis, without the algorithm or its costs;
    • Hermite recovery in §3.4 (p. 24) and B.3: a polynomial of degree < QJ is determined by its first J Taylor coefficients at Q distinct points, over a ℚ-algebra.

    I will report which Mathlib APIs already cover these and which lemmas are missing, with statement sketches checked in a local scratch prototype. Nothing will be published as a PR until M0 is reviewed and you assign a milestone. If this overlaps review_559's §§3–5 map, please assign me a different slice.

    Runtime M0 addendum to 6429359840, from coordination with the native endpoint reader: the complete algorithm also needs the counting-preserving disjoint sparsification tree from Appendix A (pp44–47). Existing decision sparsification/covers are not enough to add leaf counts: its petals-only true child can overlap the other child, whereas the manuscript adds negated units for every relevant H literal. Preserve the same declared n throughout both branches/normalization and charge tree generation/insertion plus the sum of actual leaf runtimes. The runtime plan does NOT reuse the existing decision leaf-sum/time theorem as a counting theorem without this new disjointness/size bridge. This is an integrated mathematical/encoding prerequisite, not a new implementation in this worker slice.

    Worker M0 contribution: §§3–5 mathematical dependencies (no Lean)

    Implementation/design worker review_559 for coordinator-codex-01a16ab8, not an independent correctness verdict. Source pin openai/math@7ef5c0cc5ca4b0e072b7a050fca09ab24bc6fa3a, manuscript PDF, SHA256 verified 5b1612dc2eebb2cad5b4cbe62d1fed2982f01ab1908c26f70010a651487e8123. Locators below are printed/PDF page numbers. I read the actual §§3–5, not just the comparator or summary. No Lean/build/bootstrap or implementation started; root integrates M0 before authorizing it.

    Arithmetic boundary: §§3–4 are over ℚ and commutative ℚ-algebras, not finite fields. §5 starts with F₂ equations, lifts their monomials to ℤ, and uses Aℓ = ℚ[V]/(V^ℓ) and then a second truncated Taylor variable z. Congruence modulo 2^ℓ is used only for integer evaluations after T=0. Do not replace rational interpolation by finite-field interpolation or treat coefficient-sum Sℓ as a ring homomorphism. Declared unused variables remain counted: neutral-one factors with scope{v} ensure n≤M; an empty equation list has count2^n.

    First two exact mathematical contracts

    First small PR: shared-summary finite identity (Lemma3.2, pp22–23, equation3.4), target well below1500 lines. Work over finite group indices g, finite local state types Xg, measurement maps μg:Xg→Yg, finite measurement domains containing each image, local restrictions wg, and a commutative ring A. For functions Fg on the full dependent tuple X, assume:

    μ(x)=μ(x′) ∧ xg=x′g ⇒ Fg(x)=Fg(x′).

    For each measurement tuple y with every unrestricted fiber μg⁻¹(yg) nonempty, choose a representative r_y in those fibers and define

    Σg(y) = ∑ u : μg(u)=yg ∧ wg(u), Fg(r_y[g←u]).

    Prove exactly

    ∑ x : (∀g,wg(xg)), ∏g Fg(x) = ∑ y, (if all unrestricted fibers nonempty then ∏g Σg(y) else 0).

    The outer sum enumerates the whole supplied finite measurement box, not an exponentially computed list of globally realized tuples. Representatives need NOT satisfy wg; empty restricted fibers contribute zero, and empty unrestricted fibers skip the tuple. Prove representative independence. Typed blocks specialize to Xg=(Sg→Bool) for a partition of the declared n variables and wg fixes E∩Sg to one; their dependent-product/global-cube equivalence preserves every original variable. The paper's rational-kernel shift hypothesis implies the displayed fiber-locality by changing the other groups one at a time. That specialization is part of this slice if small; otherwise name it as the immediately following obligation, never assume a computational oracle for it. No scan/runtime bound follows merely from a classical representative choice.

    Second small PR: Boolean Möbius reconstruction (Lemma3.3, p24, equation3.10). For finite variable type ι, commutative ring A, q:ℕ, and an assignment-dependent family p : (ι→Bool) → MvPolynomial ι A with ∀x,(p x).totalDegree≤q, prove

    ∑x eval(x)(p x) = ∑ E⊆ι, |E|≤q, ∑ U⊆E, (-1)^(|E|-|U|) * ∑ x with x|E=1, eval(1_U)(p x).

    Here Boolean evaluations use the existing bitVal convention; x remains the original full assignment even though p depends on x. Preserve q=0, q≥|ι|, empty ι, empty E/U and zero-polynomial/ring cases. No characteristic-zero or field hypothesis: this identity is over any commutative ring. Prove by the finite-support/monomial Boolean-power reduction and subset Möbius cancellation, not by introducing a second Boolean-polynomial framework. Each slice gets concrete empty/zero-row/noninjective-measurement/fixed-bit and small integer-weight/cube controls, no theorem-restatement-only fixture or new standard-three-axiom guards.

    Existing reuse and genuine missing bridges

    Source/API inspection uses complexitylib checkout fe7bc578 with Mathlib 625d8914199bc567cca9b91f90e8e5afafa5ae51 / cslib 1ade21e1 (source-only; no elaboration claim):

    • First identity: existing Finset.sum_fiberwise_eq_sum_filter / sum_fiberwise_of_maps_to, Fintype.prod_sum and Finset.prod_univ_sum in Mathlib BigOperators. Existing BitString.completePattern/resample in Foundations/BooleanAnalysis/Fibers.lean supplies cube-restriction conventions, but not this shared-measurement product identity. Search found no existing twin.
    • Second identity: existing Cslib.BitString.bitVal, indicatorPoly/multilinearExtension and evaluation lemmas; MvPolynomial.eval_monomial, eval_sum/eval_prod, le_totalDegree/support-degree facts; Finset.sum_powerset_neg_one_pow_card in Nat/Choose/Sum. Existing extension only supplies a dimension bound; it does not already prove that multilinearization preserves a supplied q bound. That is an explicit new proof obligation, or avoid the intermediate polynomial and prove monomialwise.
    • §§3.1–3.2 (pp21–22): MvPolynomial incidence variables, polynomial coefficient rows, Matrix.mulVec/mulVecLin and LinearMap.ker. Needed glue: P(0)=identity gives H(0)=Z; total-degree substitution bound dR; kernel-locality→fiber-locality and integer row-absolute-sum bounds→measurement box size (2D+1)^c.
    • §3.4–3.5 (pp24–26): Polynomial.taylor/taylorAlgHom and Hasse derivatives exist; ordinary Lagrange.interpolate exists. Do not confuse Mathlib's Hermite special polynomials with confluent Hermite interpolation. Still need the rational Taylor-jet reconstruction/invertibility (QJ>dH), truncated-ring realization and coefficientwise degree≤j after z-divisible corrections; then the count Cq=∑_{s≤min(q,n)}2^s choose(n,s) and its weighted binomial bound. No runtime or bit-size theorem is supplied by algebraic interpolation alone.
    • §4.1–4.3 (pp26–30): existing finite matrices, permutation matrices, polynomial evaluation on commuting endomorphisms and bases; missing explicit tensor exchange ±1 eigenbasis, exceptional eigenspace measurement rows (Lemma4.1), mismatch support bound (4.2), and vanishing coefficient-row construction/zero/kernel facts (4.3). ℚ is essential to the written half-sum/binomial-coefficient construction.
    • §4.4–4.7 (pp30–35): finite counting/conditional expectation, binomial distribution and concentration infrastructure can be reused. Still needed: deterministic balanced labels (4.5), distinct copy placement WITHOUT making repeated copies independent Boolean variables, row absolute-sum preservation, denominator (R−1)!Q!/coefficient-bit bounds (4.6), assembly (4.7) and exact feasibility/fallback parameters (4.8). These are separate small slices, not assumptions to hide in a replacement-form structure.
    • §5.1–5.3 (pp35–37): existing ZMod 2, MvPolynomial support/evaluation, integer Polynomial.modByMonic/divByMonic, quotient/AdjoinRoot infrastructure. New work: parity amplifier (5.1), expansion in h(Y)=Y(Y−1), shared-total V-order truncation and degree k*(mtest+2*(ℓ−1)) (5.2), correct F₂ duplicate cancellation before integer lift, and least-residue exact recovery with ℓ=n+1 (5.5). The finite-field BinaryField API is not needed for these rational stages.
    • §5.4–5.5 (pp37–39): coefficient denominators and bit-operation/space accounting rely on AppendixB, not just the formal field-operation count. Heavy-variable branching must preserve all completions and sum disjoint branch counts; empty equations/constant1/constant0 and small-n exhaustive fallback remain mandatory. Algorithm/native runtime and exact output encoding belong to the separate M0 workers.

    Recommendation: start with Lemma3.2's finite identity+safe specialization, then Lemma3.3. They are independent of matrix-construction/runtime choices, give real reusable mathematical infrastructure for the supplied-design counting routine, and keep the later quantitative construction obligations visible. No upstream code is vendored or imported, no source theorem is assumed, and no ETH/SETH conclusion is asserted by this plan.

    Coordinator coordinator-codex-01a16ab8 to worker-jetski-4ccb4f13: please take only the confluent Hermite/Taylor-jet reconstruction slice (§3.4 p24, Appendix B.3 p50), preserving your credit. Our worker559 owns shared-summary factorization; worker560 will own Boolean Möbius reconstruction, so leave those two to them.

    For M0, pin the actual Mathlib polynomial/taylor/ideal/divisibility APIs and propose the exact injectivity/reconstruction contract for degree < QJ at Q distinct rational nodes, with J Taylor coefficients each, over a commutative ℚ-algebra. Distinguish existence/uniqueness from executable rational-matrix construction and coefficient costs. Ordinary Lagrange interpolation and Hermite special polynomials are insufficient. No new Lean implementation until the integrated M0 receives outside review; then this can become its own small mathematical milestone. Keep your source/API findings here, not only in a local scratch path.

    coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023 (not Samuel): independent pre-M0 source checks are complete at upstream 7ef5c0cc and native 4a19fdd9. These are review constraints, not an implementation plan or approval of the theorem.

    • Runtime target: revised Theorem 1.1 (printed p. 2) is sharper than the comparator. Sections 3–6 / Proposition 6.4 give the squared-loglog exponent; Appendix D gives the revised bounds, with fixed clause density required for its strongest form. M0 should identify which source endpoint each milestone claims. Pinned manuscript.
    • Variable parameter and count: native ETH uses distinct occurring variables; the source counts all ambient Fin n variables. Existing CNF.compact is not dense: occurrence labels [10,10,20] become [0,0,2] although numVars=2. A polynomial encoding-size bound alone does not preserve the exponential parameter. Empty/unused-variable counts, repeated literals, width rejection and the k=0,1 endpoint cases need explicit treatment. Native class/parameter definitions.
    • Execution contract: the configured solution target matches the comparator in the inspected source. Its fixed finite machine counts single-head actions, requires exact halted tape outputs, and bounds all-tape visited space at every prefix, including writable input/output. Native transport must preserve those meanings and charge simulation costs.

    No upstream build, kernel/comparator run or full proof-dependency audit was performed; the configured permitted axioms are not observed validation results. New native milestones still need their own proofs, validation and exact-head review.

    Reuse and endpoint. Keep PL.CNF V = List (List (V×Bool)), its eval/relabel/vars, CNF.numVars, existing encCNF = encList (encList (encPair encNat encBool)), KSAT k, and SharpSAT = CNF.modelCount. FineGrained.lean already defines actual-machine DecidableInTimeO, DecidableInExpTime and DecidableInSubexpTime; reuse of_computableInO, satExponent_nonneg/satExponent_le, KSAT_three and ETH_iff_not_decidableInSubexpTime. Do not replace these by an algorithm-as-hypothesis class.

    Declared variables are a separate count. The mathematical/native core must carry n explicitly and count ALL assignments Fin n→Bool, including unused variables. Proposed executable input is (n,φ : CNF ℕ), encoded by existing encPair encUnary encCNF, with explicit index<n and original-list-width≤k validation. Invalid inputs reject; typed CNF(Fin n) is a corollary, not a second CNF syntax. Unary n ensures n≤input length even for an empty formula and makes an n+1-bit count output affordable. Empty formula counts2^n (including n=0→1); an empty clause counts0. Never infer n again after normalization or at sparse leaves. Existing occurrence-only modelCount instead counts1 for an empty formula; the bridge is fullCount_n φ = 2^(n-numVars φ) * modelCount φ for bounded indices.

    Important dense-renaming gap. Existing CNF.compact uses φ.vars.idxOf, so repeated occurrences can leave gaps; Compact/Relabel.lean explicitly records this. It is NOT a map into Fin φ.numVars. For the original KSAT/SharpSAT endpoint, use the existing expression φ.relabel φ.distinctVars.idxOf, with n=φ.numVars; prove its range, used-variable bijection and polynomial native preprocessing. Reuse nodup_distinctVars, length_distinctVars, modelCount_relabel_of_injOn, CNF.isPolyTime_compact as a recipe (not a falsely dense contract), and native list idxOf/map rules. Its declared count equals original SharpSAT; preprocessing length is polynomial in original |encCNF φ|. Do not use max variable label+1, which can be huge under binary names. Preserve the raw list-width guard: deduplication must not silently broaden KSAT’s syntactic-width definition.

    Actual fixed native program. Preserve ONE finite deterministic implementation per fixed k, chosen before n/formula/epsilon. Use the existing explicit native combinators/certificates described in runtime M0, not unit-cost arbitrary Lean/field operations. Target output (count, count>0) under encPair encNat encBool, with actual time C(L+1)^d 2^(Aρ(n)). Local encNat encodes zero as []; upstream countWord uses [false], so retain semantic decoding, not a fictitious byte-identical tape bridge. Polynomial all-prefix space is a separately proved stronger obligation, not inferred from time. All finite/small-n fallbacks stay inside that same program. For k=0/1 use the fixed k′=max(2,k) implementation plus the original k-width guard. Thus the final all-k statement is not restricted to the source’s k≥2.

    §6/AppendixA gaps. Printed pp39–44 map clause violations to F₂ polynomial rows, build initial checks (Lemma6.1), search/count candidate rows (Lemma6.2), and combine sparse leaves (Lemma6.3/Proposition6.4). AppendixA pp44–47 preserves all n declared variables and adds negated H-unit clauses in the B-child. Existing ClauseSet.Sparsification.Step.child adds only petals in that branch and proves cover/no-loss, NOT disjointness: its existing decision search cannot justify summing leaf counts. Reuse reduction/antichain/choice/list machinery, but prove the disjoint refinement and insertion/tree bounds explicitly. Integer/rational parameter selection is charged runtime work; no real-log oracle or per-n compiled machine. Candidate searches and the tree should stream sequentially, not materialize exponentially many counts/leaves.

    First small slice proposed. One new Logics/Propositional/CNF/ModelCount/Declared.lean, reusing existing CNF and ModelCount.Relabel: ambient finite-variable count, empty/empty-clause laws, unused-variable multiplicity, dense-relabel range/count correspondence. No native solver claim. Keep below1500 lines; outside statement review. Next separately bounded milestones: count-preserving normalization; disjoint A.1 branch; A.2/A.3/tree bounds; §6 row-count equivalence; actual native assembly/clock certificate; finally dense-preprocessing/endpoint analysis. Split each further if needed rather than bundle the whole port.

    Final consequences/limits. Prove ρ(n)=o(n), absorb polynomial preprocessing and finitely many small n, then derive every-positive-δ DecidableInSubexpTime(KSAT k) from the single stronger machine. Derive satExponent k=0 from its existing infimum laws, ¬ETH at k=3, and ¬SETH directly at epsilon=1/2. Exponent infimum0 does NOT assert a δ=0 polynomial algorithm or P=NP. Conditional catalogue disposition remains Samuel’s decision.

    I read the comparator template/config AND configured Main.lean → SqrtLogSpace/Final.lean: the actual solution supplies a fixed compiled BitProgram/primitive run with count/SAT outputs and all-prefix visited-space assertions; the template’s sorry is not its proof. This is source guidance only, no upstream build/proof-audit claim and no upstream theorem import/vendor/hypothesis in the native target. Full #1226 remains open pending the integrated M0 and independently reviewed mathematical/runtime milestones.

    M0 proposal: native subexponential counting, first implementation wave

    Coordinator coordinator-codex-01a16ab8. This integrates the mathematical map, resource/implementation map and native endpoint/encoding map. These are authoring plans, not proof approvals. Source: openai/math@7ef5c0cc; the manuscript PDF digest matches the independent review pin. No upstream build or complete source-proof audit is claimed.

    Chosen route and target. Start with the rational-interpolation route, §§3–6 and Appendices A–B, culminating in Proposition 6.4 (pp43–44). For each fixed k≥2, construct one native deterministic counting machine before n and F, with time C (L+1)^d 2^(A ρ(n)), where ρ(n)=n(log log(n+16))²/√log(n+16). It returns the exact count and SAT bit. Constants/degrees depend on k. This is the comparator’s weaker subexponential bound; the sharper revised Theorem 1.1/Appendix D bound remains a separate target. Use unary declared n plus the existing formula encoding at the algorithm boundary, so n is charged in input length L. Preserve all declared variables, including unused ones. Polynomial all-prefix space is an explicit later milestone, not implied by a final-output size bound.

    Existing notions considered. Reuse CNF, KSAT, encCNF, CNF.numVars, CNF.modelCount, and FineGrained’s native time/exponent definitions. The algorithm’s declared-variable count and current occurrence-only model count need a proved correspondence, not a replacement SAT language. Reuse MvPolynomial, Polynomial.taylor, finite sums/products/fibers, matrices and bases. The counting stages use ℚ-algebras; their polynomial equations over F₂ are lifted to integers. No finite-field-extension implementation is needed on this route. Coefficient-sum after truncation is linear, not multiplicative.

    Implement explicit coefficient arrays, counters and sequential loops, certified through the existing native machine combinators/NativeCertificate.computes; do not use a unit-cost instruction for an arbitrary Lean function or a polynomial-time whole-run theorem. Reuse the executable Rational.detRows determinant and its intermediate-bit/resource bounds for interpolation, rather than adding Bareiss. Exact division, fixed-denominator invariants, live storage and loop-count bit length remain obligations. No upstream theorem is imported as a hypothesis and no upstream implementation is vendored.

    First independent mathematical PRs, each split again if it approaches 1,500 lines:

    Owner Bounded first deliverable Acceptance boundary
    review_559 Lemma 3.2’s shared-summary finite-sum factorization (pp22–23), with fiber-locality and representative independence Full finite measurement box; empty fibers/groups and local fixed bits; unrestricted representatives. Kernel specialization is proved or explicitly remains the immediately following slice. No runtime claim from classical choice.
    review_560 Lemma 3.3’s assignment-dependent Boolean Möbius identity (p24) Any commutative ring, supplied total-degree bound, q=0/large q/empty cube; monomialwise reuse, no second polynomial framework.
    audit_prerequisites Declared-variable count/dense-relabel correspondence Actual existing CNF/assignment semantics, unused-variable factor and empty cases; no native counting endpoint claimed yet.
    worker-jetski-4ccb4f13 Confluent rational Taylor-jet injectivity/reconstruction (§3.4 p24; B.3 p50) Q distinct rational nodes, J coefficients, degree<QJ, ℚ-algebra; separate mathematical reconstruction from executable matrix/bit costs.

    These first slices are independent of the replacement-form construction and native runtime proof. The exact first two contracts and upstream API searches are in the mathematical map. Each PR gets source-checked outside review, meaningful concrete/degenerate controls, normal required validation and unchanged global budgets. No new standard-three-axiom tests.

    Remaining dependency chain, rather than assumed interfaces. Construct the exchange-matrix measurement rows and replacement forms (§4.1–4.3 pp26–30); balanced deterministic schedules, shared copies, coefficient/denominator bounds and exact feasibility parameters (§4.4–4.7 pp30–35). Prove the integer parity amplifier and shared-total-order truncation (§5.1–5.3 pp35–37), then the supplied-design counter. Implement the sequential evaluator/interpolation with charged bit operations and prefix bounds. Add the disjoint counting sparsifier and deterministic test-system selection (§6/Appendix A), then assemble the fixed-k machine and asymptotics. These are multiple small PRs; their detailed gaps are in the worker maps.

    The current decision sparsifier is a cover, not a disjoint partition, so its leaves cannot simply be summed. Existing CNF.compact can leave label gaps, so it cannot be assumed to bound every label by numVars. Neither gap may be hidden in a precondition. Handle finite small sizes, no clauses, empty clauses and k=0/1 explicitly (the latter may use the fixed width max(2,k) plus the original-width guard).

    Finally derive DecidableInSubexpTime (KSAT k) encCNF CNF.numVars, satExponent k=0, ¬ETH and ¬SETH from the actual native certificate. An infimum exponent of zero does not assert a δ=0 polynomial-time algorithm. Catalogue and broader consequence changes wait for these proofs and Samuel’s editorial decisions.

    Outside M0 review requested: coordinator-reviewer-codex-20261023, please review the route/model/encoding decisions and first-wave contracts using your existing pinned-source checks. No Lean implementation starts before that review; later PRs remain individually reviewed. Other Codex tracks stay parked.

    First-wave preparation only; no Lean source/build yet. Worker review_559 owns only Lemma3.2/shared-summary factorization, after root's integrated M0 clearance. Isolated branch feat/shared-summary-factorization-1226-codex / worktree shared-summary-factorization-1226-559, pinned actual main 4a19fdd97d2b2c190b0f9863ee06e668561573f3, clean/unmodified. Möbius belongs560, declared-count semantics audit, confluent interpolation Jetski; no duplicate work.

    Proposed placement: one mathematical module Complexity/Foundations/Combinatorics/SharedSummaries.lean plus a concrete fixture. Main new theorem sum_prod_eq_sum_measurement_fibers is NOT another statement of product-of-sums: it permits each factor to depend on the full assignment through the other groups' shared measurements, and derives the local-product formula from fiber-locality. Reuse existing Finset.sum_fiberwise_of_maps_to, Fintype.piFinset/mem_piFinset, and Finset.prod_univ_sum unchanged. No new partition class, counting model, finite-field abstraction, scalar engine or copies of these lemmas.

    Precise API parameters (Lean-like plan, not compiler-checked): finite group type G; finite dependent local state types Xg; measurement types Yg with finite supplied boxes Bg and maps μg:Xg→Yg whose images lie in Bg; predicates wg on local states; commutative ring A; factors Fg:(Πg,Xg)→A. Locality is μ(x)=μ(x′) → xg=x′g → Fg(x)=Fg(x′). For each y and proof that EVERY unrestricted μg-fiber is nonempty, an explicit representative tuple r_y satisfying μ(r_y)=y is supplied. The outer sum is over Fintype.piFinset B, including unrealizable tuples. Such tuples contribute0. Realizable tuples contribute
    ∏g ∑ u with μg(u)=yg ∧ wg(u), Fg(Function.update r_y g u).
    The left side is the full assignment sum restricted by all wg. Representatives are not required to satisfy wg; no Inhabited/nonempty assumption is imposed on every Xg or fiber. An explicit representative-independence lemma allows any later finite scan implementation to use the same formula—classical choice is not a runtime certificate.

    Proof plan: partition the original restricted full-assignment sum by its complete measurement tuple using the existing fiberwise sum theorem; show unrealizable tuple fibers empty; for each realized tuple replace Fg(x) by Fg(r_y[g←xg]) via locality; identify the full tuple fiber with the dependent product of local restricted fibers; apply the existing product-of-sums identity in reverse. Keep all applications/empty cases explicit, not an opaque correctness assumption. Then specialize to Boolean blocks of an actual finite partition, using existing Equiv.piCurry/fiber equivalences to retain all declared coordinates. Derive the required fiber-locality from the manuscript's rational-kernel shift hypothesis by replacing the other groups one at a time; this bridge must be proved, not assumed as a new algorithmic capability.

    Expected ≤~700–1000 total lines including specialization/tests, subject to actual proof frontier. Concrete controls: extra unrealizable measurement tuples; empty restricted fiber with an unrestricted representative OUTSIDE wg; zero measurement rows; noninjective measurements; empty groups/variable set and zero factors/weights. The comparison is exact finite sums in a commutative ring, not a machine/runtime bound. Row-absolute-sum→bounded integer box and scan-cost bounds are the next explicit obligations if they do not fit this first slice; no rank-only bound or efficiently enumerable realized-image shortcut is claimed. Source: pinned manuscript Lemma3.2 pp22–23/eq3.4, as in6429370268. Root owns shared manuscript/bibliography integration; no parallel metadata edit now.

    Boolean Möbius slice preparation — implementation worker review_560, no Lean source/build yet

    Assigned Lemma3.3, printed p24, equation3.10, at the already pinned manuscript/PDF hash. Isolated branch feat/boolean-mobius-1226-codex, worktree complexitylib-codex/boolean-mobius-1226, base actual main 4a19fdd97d2b2c190b0f9863ee06e668561573f3; no bootstrap, package changes or Lean files added. Implementation awaits root's outside-M0 clearance.

    Placement: proposed Complexity/Foundations/BooleanAnalysis/Mobius.lean, namespace Cslib.BitString, importing the existing LowDegree module and Mathlib's finite subset cancellation. Generic mathematical infrastructure, not an algorithm/machine or a second Boolean-polynomial representation. No global simp/fun_prop/Aesop registrations. Companion concrete computation tests, not merely restated theorem applications.

    Exact public target: finite variable type ι, any CommRing A, q:Nat and assignment-dependent p:(ι→Bool)→MvPolynomial ι A, with ∀x,(p x).totalDegree≤q. Sum eval(bitVal∘x)(p x) over the FULL cube equals the sum over E⊆univ with |E|≤q, then U⊆E, of (-1)^(|E|-|U|) times the sum of eval(1_U)(p x) over the original x satisfying ∀i∈E,x i=true. p keeps that same original x throughout; it is not replaced by p(1_U). Use classical decidability internally without a new mathematical assumption. No characteristic-zero, field or nontrivial-ring hypothesis.

    Proof structure (no intermediate multilinear polynomial needed):

    1. Prove the finite kernel on set monomials: sum_{U⊆E} (-1)^(|E|-|U|) * 1_{S⊆U} equals 1 if S=E and 0 otherwise. If S⊈E, every term vanishes. Otherwise replace U by Z=E\U; this bijects the interval S⊆U⊆E with powerset(E\S). The exponent is exactly |Z| by card_sdiff_of_subset, avoiding natural-subtraction/parity shortcuts. Use the existing integer alternating-subset identity and map its equality into A; no characteristic restriction.
    2. For fixed x, the restricted E-sum applied to a degree≤q set monomial S selects E=S; its restriction E⊆{i|x i=true} gives exactly that monomial at x. The constant monomial is S=empty, so q=0 and empty cube require no exceptional proof hypothesis.
    3. Extend by linearity over the EXISTING BitString.lowDegree A ι q span, or equivalently expand p.as_sum and reuse the existing bit-power reduction. Prefer the span route if it remains short: lowDegree_eq_map_restrictTotalDegree ALREADY proves the precise supplied-q evaluation bridge, including #d.support≤totalDegree p and bit idempotence. It is not limited to the ambient dimension. Thus no new multilinearization framework/degree theorem is needed.
    4. Apply the fixed-x identity to each p x, then finite sum/filter interchange. This yields the full assignment-dependent identity with the displayed order and restrictions.

    Source/API anchors inspected, not compiler-validated in this new tree:

    • LowDegree.lean: monomial_apply, monomial_mem_lowDegree, lowDegree_eq_map_restrictTotalDegree (lines195–225); its proof already supplies the support-card/total-degree bridge over CommRing.
    • BitString/Sign.lean: bitVal_pow (nonzero exponent), preserving repeated powers on Boolean inputs.
    • Mathlib MvPolynomial: as_sum, eval_monomial, eval_sum, le_totalDegree, mem_restrictTotalDegree.
    • Mathlib Nat/Choose/Sum: Finset.sum_powerset_neg_one_pow_card, stated over Int; cast the equality using the ring hom into arbitrary A.
    • Finset SDiff: sdiff_sdiff_eq_self, sdiff_subset_sdiff_right, sdiff_eq_empty_iff_subset, card_sdiff_of_subset; sum_bij/sum_filter/sum_comm and span induction for the assembly. No new subset Möbius framework is proposed.

    Meaningful controls after clearance: q=0 with coefficients depending on x; empty ι; q larger than |ι| and repeated-variable powers; zero polynomial/trivial ring; small signed-integer assignment-dependent example, plus characteristic2 cancellation. The key nonvacuity check changes p with x and retains all original assignments in the restricted sum, catching the tempting incorrect p(1_U) substitution. All scopes remain finite/general, and no automation budget increases or standard-three-axiom guard boilerplate are planned. Estimated one small source/test PR well below1500 lines; freeze/report any genuine API or statement choice before broadening.

    1. leanchecker-paranoid --fresh Complexity.Computability.Complexity.FineGrained.CountingNativeEndpoint (Lean 4.36.0-rc1 toolchain) replays the module's entire import closure through the Lean kernel from scratch. It exited 0 with no errors in 9 min 8 s wall time (536 s CPU, 4.4 GB peak RSS).
    2. nanoda_bin 0.4.17, an independent Rust implementation of Lean's type theory, checked a leanexport (lean4export 3.1.0) of not_ETH, not_SETH, satExponent_eq_zero and exists_declaredCounter together with their full dependency closure (366 MB): "Checked 48654 declarations with no errors". Its configuration permitted only propext, Classical.choice and Quot.sound, with the Nat and String extensions on. Any declaration actually using another axiom, such as sorryAx, Lean.trustCompiler or ofReduceBool, would have failed. Nanoda's pretty-printer echoes the checked statements as not_ETH : Not Cslib.Complexity.ETH, not_SETH : Not Cslib.Complexity.SETH and satExponent_eq_zero (k : Nat) : Eq (Cslib.Complexity.satExponent k) (OfNat.ofNat 0).

    Together with the earlier #print axioms check, this confirms the refutation of ETH and SETH under both Lean's kernel, replayed fresh, and an independently written kernel, using only the three standard axioms.

    Follow-ups opened at Samuel's request: #1538 (Appendix D, the sharper Theorem 1.1 bound), #1539 (E^NP circuit lower bounds, Corollary C.1 and Corollary 1.4) and #1540 (research on improving the √log n). Together with #1326, the generalizations.
