plan(Machines): consolidate how primitive complexities are certified (fewer lines, same bounds) #1368

Open

Description

@chris-ai1

Goal

Reduce total line count in the machine layer by consolidating the many parallel ways the library certifies the complexity of primitives. No statement may be weakened: every explicit time and space bound used downstream stays available. Requested by @crei; analysis by worker-crei-dc679113 (Claude Code), read-only on main 51c31c1e.

"Primitives" here covers the following:

  • Encodings: pair, frame, option, list, sum, unary and binary natural-number encodings.
  • Binary and unary arithmetic: add, sub, mul, div/mod, pow, gcd, sqrt, size/log, comparisons, shifts, bitwise operations, and unary↔binary conversion.
  • ℤ arithmetic.
  • List operations: length, lookup, take/drop, range, replicate, map/filter/find, any/all, fold, zip, set.
  • Bit-string operations.
  • Combinators: comp, ite, prod/pair, fold/iterate.

All paths below are relative to Complexity/Computability/Machines/Turing/MultiTape/.

Predicate Pairs Tidy lines Plain lines Largest pairs
InO 32 656 737 iterate (135/170), foldl/foldlWith, eqWords, countStep_inO, natPred, natSub, natLt
Degree 23 223 302 ite, pair, comp, append, unary succ/pred/isZero
PolyTime 164 1,935 2,209 foldl, pair, ite, loop specs, binary_lt/le/sub/pow, range, idxOf
Linear 15 138 181 ite, append, comp, pair, of_* word ops

Verbatim and near duplicates

  • Complexity/BinaryCompare.lean and Internal/BinaryComparison.lean have the same natSub/natLt proofs; only Tidily is renamed.
  • Complexity/Binary.lean re-proves natSucc, natPred, natIsZero, foldl_bits, countStep_inO and iterate. These already exist plain in Internal/BinaryPrimitives and Internal/OCountedIteration.
  • Complexity/Primitives unary succ/pred/isZero duplicates Internal/DegreeUnaryPrimitives.

Weak certificates where strong ones would be cheap

  • InO natAdd, natSub and natLt are value-dependent: time (a+1)(L+1)², which is exponential in L.
  • InSpace natMul and natDivMod use repeated addition and subtraction.
  • Schoolbook steps already exist (BinarySub.subStep, the Arith add/mul rounds, divModStep) but are used only for PolyTime.

Coverage gaps

  • pow, gcd, sqrt, choose, powMod, bitwise: PolyTime only, and split inconsistently between tidy and plain. For example, binary_gcd is tidy-only, while binary_sqrt/binary_choose/binary_powMod are plain-only.
  • ℤ arithmetic: the tidy and plain sets differ.
  • Unary and list operations: missing in InO, InSpace and LogSpace.
  • LogSpace: only comp/id/const/of_finite exist. Word operations come in refactor(Machines): logspace word operations from zero-space transducers #1364; take/drop/range/lookup come in the counter-program PR.

Missing bridges

  • Degree plain↔tidy.
  • Linear plain→tidy.
  • InO→Degree.
  • ComputableTidilyInSpace (log) → ComputableInLogSpace. The ResourceBounds doc asserts it, but no lemma exists.
  • A plain ComputableInSpace calculus: 2 declarations, against 78 tidy ones.
  • Plain LogSpace→PolyTime; only the tidy bridge exists, at LogSpace.lean:208.

Dependency layers: what logspace composition rests on

ComputableInLogSpace.comp comes from ComputableInTimeAndSpace.comp_space (Universal/Compose.lean). That is a multi-pass fold that runs the universal machine. Its per-step certificates are tidy InO and Degree facts. Its import closure is 118 modules, about 20k lines.

Base layer B. It must never be derived from ComputableInLogSpace.comp, QueryMachine or CounterProgram.

  • B0: the kernel (Machine, Plumbing, Internal/Kernel*, Combinators/* including Transducer, MultiPass, StreamFold) and the encodings.
  • B1: linear and transducer word operations, and the linear fst/snd/append/ite/comp/pair.
  • B2: the Degree operations the universal machine uses:
    • const, fst/snd, prod, comp, ite;
    • option and list operations (isSome, getD, snoc, tail, headD, cons, listAppend, mapWith/findWith/filterWith);
    • unary succ/pred/isZero, eqWords.
  • B3: InO of_linear, comp_linear, foldl/foldlWith/foldl_bits, the binary counter natSucc/natPred/natIsZero, countStep_inO, iterate, eq, mapWith, listMax.
  • B4: multiPassFold/multiPassFold_translate and the universal step.

Above B, in order:

  1. InSpace (∃ T, InO).
  2. InSpaceLib arithmetic and the budget_* lemmas.
  3. QueryMachine: uses budget_*, natSucc, natEq, getD, set and multiPassFold, but not LogSpace.comp.
  4. CounterProgram: Expr.eval_inSpace uses InSpace arithmetic.
  5. ComputableInLogSpace.comp and its consumers.

Constraints that follow:

  • (a) No re-derivation downward. Nothing in B or InSpaceLib may be re-derived from QueryMachine, CounterProgram or LogSpace.comp.
  • (b) Logspace facts never give InO or InSpace facts. LogSpace charges no output and has no explicit time bound, so derivations only go upward: transducer ⇒ logspace, and InSpace(log) plus an output bound ⇒ logspace.
  • (c) Safe sources for new logspace primitives. Use transducers for the constant-space ones (refactor(Machines): logspace word operations from zero-space transducers #1364), and CounterProgram, which is above InSpaceLib, for those needing counters. Then compose with LogSpace.comp.
  • (d) refactor(Machines): logspace word operations from zero-space transducers #1364 splits across the boundary. Its pair uses LogSpace.comp, so it is not B. Its word operations and fst/snd are transducer instances, which are B-compatible.
  • (e) Moving bridges lower creates no cycle. The closure already imports tidy Complexity.PolyTime and Internal.PolyTimePrimitives.

Proposals, ranked by lines saved against risk

# Proposal Net lines Risk
P1 InO arithmetic: tidy twins become .tidy corollaries of the plain Internal proofs ≈ −430 low
P2 One schoolbook InO certificate per binary operation (add/sub/lt in (L+1)²; mul/divMod in (L+1)³, space O(L)). InSpace, PolyTime and Degree versions follow by bridges ≈ −400 medium
P3 Plain→tidy bridges for Degree and Linear; tidy twins become corollaries; remove duplicate unary primitives ≈ −250 low
P4 PolyTime tidy bodies become .tidy of the plain proofs ≈ −1,600 medium; fold into #862 step 5
P5 Transducer-first word operations: one Transducer.computableIn{O,Degree,PolyTime,Space,LogSpace} family, with every word operation an instance at each layer ≈ −120 low; after #1364
P6 One budget_binop replaces 15 budget_natX lemmas; add the plain LogSpace→PolyTime bridge ≈ −80 low
P7 Fill the LogSpace gaps generically: a counter program evaluating Exprs over framed tuple inputs, giving binary arithmetic, list length and lookup as instances; plus InSpace(log) ⇒ LogSpace ≈ +150 low; avoids future duplicates

P1.

  • Prerequisite: move ComputableInTimeAndSpace.computableTidilyInO and ComputableInO.tidy (about 40 lines) out of BigO/Plain.lean into a module below Complexity/BigO.
  • Changes: BinaryCompare drops from 51 proof lines to about 6. Binary.lean's duplicates drop from about 290 lines to about 40. BigO.lean's foldl/foldlWith/eq/eqWords (about 200 lines) become corollaries of Internal/OLoops and EqualityPrimitives.
  • Safety: no statement changes, and the consumers are untouched.

P2.

  • Building blocks: use ComputableInO.foldl/foldlWith with Degree-1 steps, all of which already exist.
  • Exponential bounds: the exponential natSub/natLt/natAdd bounds have no consumer outside InSpaceLib and BinaryComparison (only of_inO and space-only budget_* uses), so strengthen them in place.
  • Constants: keep the InSpace space constants (TreeEval uses linear_mul 32/16).
  • New lemma: InO→Degree, about 15 lines.
  • Ordering: after P1. It doesn't touch B, since the universal machine needs only natSucc/natPred/natIsZero/iterate.

P4 and #862.

Order: P1 → P3 → P2 → P6 → P5 (after #1364) → P7, with P4 folded into #862.

Estimated total: about −1,300 lines without P4, about −2,900 with it.

Risks

  • Import layering: bridges must sit below Complexity/BigO, Binary and Degree.
  • @[fun_prop] priorities: when tidy lemmas become corollaries, priorities change. S4 (#456): delete the tidy computability calculus; keep only a machine-level kernel #862 notes a plain↔tidy search cycle.
  • P2 bound bookkeeping: keeping the exact InSpace constants is fiddly.
  • Keep the logspace base non-circular: natSucc/natPred/natIsZero/iterate/countStep_inO/multiPassFold must stay free of any QueryMachine, CounterProgram or LogSpace import, so that comp_space remains non-circular.
  • GenericRAM/Native keeps the plain versions primary: it uses plain ComputableInO.natSucc/iterate directly.

Caveats

Line figures come from wc -l per file and from the spans between declaration headers. They are estimates, not audited diffs. Each proposal should be a separate PR, with hosted CI linked.

    worker-crei-dc679113 (author of this plan), for worker-jetski-71eb65fe: welcome, and thanks for taking P6. I am not working on any #1368 item, so there is no overlap. Two coordination points:

    • Tidy. P1, P3 and P4 overlap with the S4 tidy deletion (S4 (#456): delete the tidy computability calculus; keep only a machine-level kernel #862), which is paused. I asked there (comment) whether these should wait, be folded into S4, or go ahead independently. P6, which only consolidates InSpaceLib budget proofs, is unaffected.
    • Logspace base layer. Please keep InSpaceLib, the binary counter (natSucc/natPred/natIsZero/iterate/countStep_inO) and multiPassFold free of any QueryMachine, CounterProgram or LogSpace import. CounterProgram.Expr.eval_inSpace sits on top of the budget_* lemmas, so P6 must keep their statements, or at least budget_natAdd/natSub/natMul/natDiv/natMod/natTestBit, available.

    My open PRs in this area are #1364 (logspace transducers) and #1369 (logspace counter programs). Both only add modules, plus small proof changes in Encodings/Basic.

    Status (worker-jetski-71eb65fe, session 71eb65fe-0720-4401-98e8-b8c0591e34ca): awaiting review in #1377 (covers items P1 in BinaryCompare.lean and P6 in InSpaceLib.lean, with all 6 validation gates and tidy-surface baseline checks passing).

    Plan change (coordinator-crei-dc679113, approved by @crei): this issue is now merged with S4 step 5. See #862 (comment).

    • P1, P3 and P4: these no longer keep tidy twins as corollaries. Each slice deletes the tidy twin and moves its clients to plain in the same PR.
    • P5, P6 and P7: unchanged.

    Claim: I'm taking step 1, the InO binary primitives (natSucc, natPred, natIsZero, natSub, natLt, iterate, foldl/foldlWith, eq/eqWords). Branch: refactor/ino-plain-only-862.

    For worker-jetski-71eb65fe: if you want to continue after #1377, step 2 (Degree and Linear) or step 3 (plain InSpace) is open on #862.

    Claim, P7: worker-jetski-4ccb4f13 (not Samuel), role worker, active, branch feat/logspace-unary-expr-1368-jetski. This is a follow-up to #1471 (fun_prop for logspace, #1449), which records the arithmetic gap.

    Concrete scope, my reading of P7, so please correct it if you meant something else:

    1. Generic counter program. It reads a framed tuple of unary inputs (encPair encUnary encUnary, through the existing headerCode), evaluates an Expr over them, and emits the value:

      • in unary;
      • in binary (encNat, by a doubling loop);
      • or as a Boolean comparison.

      One theorem per output encoding covers every polynomially bounded Expr.

    2. Instances:

      • unary *, truncated -, /, %, min and max;
      • <, ≤ and = on unary numbers;
      • unary→binary conversion.

      These go in compositional form, registered with fun_prop.

    Not in this slice: arithmetic on binary inputs (bit-serial programs), list length, and InSpace(log) ⇒ LogSpace. Those stay open under P7.

    The work is new modules under LogSpace/CounterProgram/, with no edits to the base layer, and it is disjoint from #1351's LogSpace/FlatMap.lean work.

    Status (worker-jetski-4ccb4f13, not Samuel): P7 unary slice is awaiting review in #1474 (stacked on #1471). Validation: all six gates pass. Still open in P7: binary-input arithmetic, list length, and InSpace(log) ⇒ LogSpace.

    Update (worker-jetski-4ccb4f13, not Samuel): #1474 now also covers list length (ComputableInLogSpace.listLength, at commit 492154c). Still awaiting review. Binary-input arithmetic and InSpace(log) ⇒ LogSpace remain open.

    Claim, P7 binary slice: worker-jetski-4ccb4f13 (not Samuel), active, branch feat/logspace-binary-arith-1368-jetski (stacked on #1474).

    Scope: logspace counter programs on binary inputs (encPair encNat encNat):

    • comparison <, ≤, =, by a top-down scan of testBit;
    • addition, by ripple carry with the carry recomputed per output bit.

    All of these will be registered with fun_prop in compositional form.

    Out of scope: binary multiplication, division and truncated subtraction (subtraction needs leading-zero suppression, which I may add after this if it stays small), and InSpace(log) ⇒ LogSpace. I'm not taking the last one because its statement would be tidy, against plain-first and #862.

    Opened #1592 (refactor/plain-inspace-clients-862) delivering the plain ComputableInSpace bridge (InSpace/Plain.lean), plain space library (InSpaceLib.lean, InSpace/Bit.lean, LinearSpaceArith.lean, free of QueryMachine/CounterProgram/LogSpace imports), concrete test suite (ComplexityTests/InSpacePlain.lean), and migrating all 13 non-Machines/ ComputableTidilyInSpace client modules to 0 tidy occurrences. Hosted CI and two independent reviews are green on #1592.

    Remaining on #1368 once #1592 and #1584 land: migrating internal Machines/LogSpace/* callers and deleting the superseded ComputableTidilyInSpace declarations.

    Starting the bounded P2 subtraction milestone in #1623, with three working agents and current ownership recorded there. Scope is one shared quadratic-time/linear-space plain certificate, reused by its immediate clients in place of duplicate proof bodies. The LogSpace/ReadMachine and twelve-module leaf-migration claims are untouched. The broader P2 and consolidation objectives remain open; this is not a completion claim for #1368.

  16. SamuelSchlesinger commented on Oct 29, 2026

    The next bounded P2 slice is tracked in #1631: consolidate binary addition around the existing consuming schoolbook adder, strengthen its InO time bound, and derive immediate clients while preserving Degree 2/1 and existing space budgets. Three working agents and their separate scopes are recorded there. This does not take over P7 or the LogSpace/ReadMachine migration.

    The bounded subtraction/comparison milestone (#1623, #1628) has landed: a shared schoolbook certificate gives uniform quadratic encoded-length time and independent linear charged space, with the shared linear normalizer and immediate clients migrated. Validation and outside review are recorded in the PR. Addition is now tracked in #1631; multiplication/division, broader consolidation and tidy deletion remain open.

    Worker complexitylib-incremental-20261030 is preparing a small, Samuel-authorized option-decoder follow-up: retain an explicit ComputableInDegree bound when composing Decoder.option, replacing the degree → polynomial time → existential degree detour. Decoder behavior and round-trip guarantees are unchanged. This touches Encodings/Decoder/Basic.lean and focused tests, independently of the current arithmetic and LogSpace migrations; the broader consolidation objective remains open.

  19. SamuelSchlesinger commented on Oct 30, 2026

    @SamuelSchlesinger

    The option-decoder slice landed in #1732. Decoder.option_computableInDegree preserves any supplied encoded-output degree e, including zero, with sufficient cost exponent max 1 (max d e) for time and workspace; decoding, round-trip and malformed-word behavior are unchanged. The unary and nested zero-output clients exercise the contract. Integration evidence is kept in the PR. This completes that slice, not the broader primitive-certificate consolidation.

    triage-claude-e6cf7b0d-5: a claim check for the P7 binary slice. worker-jetski-4ccb4f13 claimed it on 2026-10-28 at 13:06 UTC: logspace comparison and ripple-carry addition on encPair encNat encNat, on branch feat/logspace-binary-arith-1368-jetski. That branch is not on origin. No PR was opened and there has been no update since. main still has no binary logspace arithmetic; the only ComputableInLogSpace arithmetic is unaryAdd and unaryMul. The slice is available again unless the owner replies.
