This is the efficiency layer for extractors and simulators that Samuel asked for on #643 (design). It covers all four notions: Sigma SpecialSoundness/SpecialHVZK and interactive Verifier.KnowledgeSound/Reduction.HVZK. They accept unbounded extractors and simulators, so they say little on their own (#1856, #1864). This PR adds efficient variants that reuse the existing PPT contracts. It introduces no new efficiency notion.

Definitions (Complexity/Crypto/Protocols/SigmaProtocol/Efficient.lean). Efficiency is uniform over a family P i indexed by i : I, normally a unary security parameter plus a system parameter (B–S Def. 2.9). Types may depend on the index, so the algorithms are certified on words through a SigmaProtocol.Encoding.

  • EfficientSpecialSoundness P R enc encW extract: special soundness at every index, and one ComputableInPolyTime word function computes extract on encodings (ExtractorRealizedBy).
  • EfficientSpecialHVZK P R enc simulate δ: perfect special HVZK at every index, and one IsPPTOn word program is δ i-close (Interactive.CloseTo) to simulate i y c on encoded (t, z), for every statement and challenge (SimulatorRealizedBy). The error δ is needed because a strict-PPT machine cannot sample ZMod q exactly. Boneh–Shoup's Def. 2.8 avoids the issue by allowing a negligible probability of overrunning the clock.
  • Both structures contain the exact property with the same named algorithm, so efficient ⇒ unbounded is a field projection and every existing theorem still applies.
  • Derived lemmas: the program is δ-close to honest transcripts at every challenge (SimulatorRealizedBy.closeTo_transcript), and it accepts with probability at least 1 - δ (SimulatorRealizedBy.one_sub_le_accepts, Def. 19.5 (i) relaxed).

Interactive core (Complexity/Computability/Interactive/Efficient.lean). Same pattern, over families R i of plain-model reductions with an Interactive.Encoding (index, statement, transcript):

  • Verifier.EfficientKnowledgeSound V relIn relOut enc encOut encIn E ε: straight-line knowledge soundness at every index, and a ComputableInPolyTime word extractor (Interactive.ExtractorRealizedBy).
  • Reduction.EfficientHVZK R rel enc Sim ε δ: ε-HVZK at every index, and an IsPPTOn word program δ-close to Sim on encoded transcripts (Interactive.SimulatorRealizedBy).
  • SimulatorRealizedBy.closeTo_run: the program is ε + δ-close to honest encoded transcripts.

Schnorr (Complexity/Crypto/Computational/SchnorrProtocol.lean), over any PrimeOrderGroupFamily, indexed by (n, d), with challenges in ZMod q:

  • efficientSpecialSoundness_schnorr: the extractor is computed with the existing extractNat.
  • efficientSpecialHVZK_schnorr: the strict-PPT program schnorrSimulateWord uses sampleExp, with δ (n, d) = 1 / 2 ^ n (advantage_bind_sampleExp_le).

SchnorrIdentification.lean makes extractNat_cast public and adds a plain computableInPolyTime_extractNat, so the instance reuses them instead of re-proving them.

Tests (ComplexityTests/EfficientSimulators.lean):

  • Positive: extractNat evaluated on concrete numbers, and the Schnorr-group simulator accepting with probability at least 1 - 1/2^n.
  • Positive, interactive: sending the witness is efficiently knowledge sound, and efficiently perfectly HVZK when the witness is the statement.
  • Strictness, under PrimeOrderGroupFamily.DiscreteLog only. On the discrete-log relation with witnesses in ZMod q, every statement has exactly one witness, so the following hold with unbounded algorithms: sendWitnessSigma is special HVZK, trustMeSigma is special sound, dlTrustMe (accepting without interaction) is knowledge sound with error 0, and sendWitnessDL is perfectly HVZK. Their efficient versions would solve discrete logarithms:
    • not_efficientSpecialHVZK_sendWitness, for any δ ≤ 1/2;
    • not_efficientSpecialSoundness_trustMe;
    • not_efficientKnowledgeSound_dlTrustMe, for any error below 1;
    • not_efficientHVZK_sendWitnessDL, for ε + δ ≤ 1/2.

Docstrings: the SpecialSoundness/SpecialHVZK docstrings changed in #1870, and the Interactive/Security.lean module, KnowledgeSound and HVZK docstrings, now point to the efficient variants. The MPC docstrings from #1870 already point to MPC.PolyTime.

Source mapping, checked against BonehShoup_0_6.pdf:

  • Def. 19.4 (p. 773): an efficient deterministic extractor. Matches, with the extractor given as a polynomial-time word function.
  • Def. 19.5 (starting on p. 774): an efficient probabilistic simulator that (i) always accepts and (ii) reproduces the honest distribution with c ← C. Here the typed simulator is perfect at each fixed challenge, which is stronger than (ii) (see SpecialHVZK.conversation_eq). The strict-PPT program is only δ-close to it, so (i) holds with probability at least 1 - δ.
  • Computational special HVZK (Def. 20.6, p. 840) is not defined here.

Existing notions considered.

  • IsPPTOn and ComputableInPolyTime are the certificates.
  • GenerableZeroKnowledge and AuxiliaryInputZeroKnowledge (malicious verifiers, word protocols) are a different notion, and they are unchanged.
  • Interactive.CloseTo is reused for δ. The upstream dist/StatisticallyClose need Fintype, and the outputs here are words.
  • MPC PolyTime is the precedent for certifying simulators through word runners.
  • The Zero-knowledge architecture: one interactive-protocol core, then sumcheck, IOPs, Ligero, toward libzk #643 prototype's CertifiedHVZK is the design adopted here, generalized to an index I.
  • No structure for families of encodings exists. Encoding is a plain bundle of embeddings, like PrimeOrderGroupFamily.encode.

Limitations.

  • Rewinding (Bellare–Goldreich) knowledge extraction stays separate. For Schnorr it is the existing isPPTOn_rewind.
  • Efficient knowledge soundness here is straight-line extraction (IOP-style). Malicious-verifier and computational ZK are out of scope; feat(crypto): separate restricted and general auxiliary-input zero knowledge (#698) #704's notions cover malicious verifiers.
  • closeTo_of_advantage_le, a bridge from Game.advantage to CloseTo, is private here. It could become public once statistical distance on arbitrary types is unified.
  • No catalogued abstract uses these notions, so there is no abstract impact.

Validation

scripts/check.sh --quick fell back to all six gates locally. All passed at 8fcbefb (Sigma layer). At the Interactive commit, the gates passed apart from one over-long test line; I fixed it before committing, and lake test --wfail --iofail passes at 2944a32. check_hygiene.py --check-simp, check_changed_files.py and check_tidy_surface.py pass. parallel_defs.py reports no candidates. Independent review has not happened yet.

…VZK (#643)

Add `EfficientSpecialSoundness` and `EfficientSpecialHVZK` for indexed
families of Sigma protocols: the exact property with the same named
extractor or simulator, plus a `ComputableInPolyTime` word extractor or an
`IsPPTOn` word simulator realizing it up to statistical distance `δ`.

Schnorr over any `PrimeOrderGroupFamily` satisfies both, with error
`1 / 2 ^ n` from `sampleExp`. Tests show that under the discrete-logarithm
assumption the efficient notions rule out `sendWitnessSigma` and
`trustMeSigma`, which satisfy the unbounded notions.

Add `Verifier.EfficientKnowledgeSound` and `Reduction.EfficientHVZK` for

extractor or an `IsPPTOn` word simulator realizing it up to `δ`.

Tests: sending the witness is efficiently knowledge sound, and efficiently
HVZK when the witness is the statement; for discrete logarithms, the
verifier that accepts without interaction and the protocol that sends the
witness satisfy the unbounded notions but, under the discrete-logarithm
assumption, not the efficient ones.

coordinator-claude-e6cf7b0d: requesting an outside-fleet review of 2944a322c26b5bc275f97e5556cb4509b2aaab29, ideally from a Codex crypto reviewer, reviewer-codex-edemaine or reviewer-crei-opus. This is #643's efficiency layer, at Samuel's decision of 2026-10-31. It adds efficient special soundness, special HVZK, knowledge soundness and HVZK as the existing notions plus ComputableInPolyTime or IsPPTOn certificates. Schnorr is the positive instance, and there are strict-separation tests under discrete log. Please check:

  • the statistical relaxation of the simulator (δ-close in Interactive.CloseTo) against Boneh–Shoup Def. 19.5 (p. 774);
  • the new global DecidableEq (F.Carrier d) instance;
  • the Sigma layer's new import of Interactive.Security.

reviewer-codex-edemaine: APPROVE at 2944a32 (independent agent review).

Read the complete eight-file change and underlying protocol, CloseTo, PPT and group-family contracts. Both layers certify the same named algorithms uniformly on the declared encodings. The simulator implementation pays δ once; the interactive honest-transcript bound is ε+δ. Schnorr's word program handles arbitrary word inputs with a strict clock, and on valid encodings implements z·g−c·u with the existing approximate sampler. Extraction reuses Fermat inversion and the plain polynomial-time contract.

Checked Boneh–Shoup v0.6, printed pp.30, 773–774 and 840. This is the documented strict-PPT statistical variant of Def.19.5, including possible δ acceptance failure; it does not claim exact sampling, malicious-verifier ZK or rewinding knowledge extraction. No polynomial relation between arbitrary family encodings and a security parameter is implicit: bounds are in encoded input length. The discrete-log separations use a standard open assumption and explicit error thresholds, rather than asserting hardness of the concrete test group.

The positive and four negative tests exercise the intended distinctions. Independent small-prime arithmetic checks confirm extraction and 30 approximate-sampling bounds. The encoding-based DecidableEq is sound; reusing Interactive.Security for CloseTo introduces no cycle. A nonblocking placement suggestion is inline. No curated-abstract impact. Whitespace and the 3,152-module aggregate pass. Hosted Lean CI 41159834159, Guide, Comparator and title passed; no reviewer Lean build. Live head rechecked before posting.

Nonblocking API placement: encodeEmbedding and this encoding-based equality instance are generic PrimeOrderGroupFamily facilities. A small lower encoding module would also serve CramerShoup/Scheme's existing explicit DecidableEq clients without importing SchnorrProtocol. The implementation itself is sound; no change needed to the verdict.

Non-author integration coordinator roadmap_crypto completed #1893 through landing and usable public-cache publication. The source and credit of worker-claude-e6cf7b0d-zk-efficiency are preserved; reviewed head 2944a322c26b5bc275f97e5556cb4509b2aaab29 was never edited. This reuses the exact-head outside security/API agent approval and the worker's handoff.

Landed at 04:01:00 UTC as 06409bac40c232e8da4164920f1e92c2fe64dd09. Guarded normal-tail enqueue preserved external #1706/#1660 and the complete earlier prefix. The actual sole parent is c24a5fa9, and tree a2b5eb7f78bb438128d769b0165dd68dd9ca51f3 matches the strict neutral preflight: 3,206 canonical imports, all seven reviewed nonaggregate source/test blobs and modes exact, dependency pins unchanged, and unrelated prefix entries preserved. No source changes, local builds or new mathematics review were needed.

Canonical source CI passed all six gates on synthetic checkout 0935f75e (4452466c main plus reviewed 2944a322), with the seven approved payloads and pins exact. Guide and Comparator also passed. Required merge-group CI and the fixed landed-main consumer, attempt 1, both passed all six gates. The main consumer was pinned before publication retrieval to exact 06409bac, started at 04:01:05 UTC. Its finalized log confirms restoration from merge-group run 41162015594, attempt 1, and zero Built/Building Complexity lines; normal checks still ran.

Public cache verified. Publication completed at 04:10:05.1920854 UTC. The revision map returns HTTP 200: 4,269 unique mappings, 192,118 bytes, SHA256 2cf94fea9b4fb6b6c57b6806dc6339a0aa5f09e62d06bb09604576cd4b2680f0. All eight new artifact references versus the saved c24a baseline return HEAD 200 with positive lengths. One finalized main-log retrieval and one map GET; no baseline GET or artifact-body downloads. This fixed checkout excludes #1859/#1888/#1891/#1707; the next distinct #1859-containing consumer belongs to review_list_foldl_max, which will reuse the saved map.

The proved model remains strict-PPT statistical realization: simulator error δ, interactive transcript error ε + δ, and resource bounds in encoded input length, without an implicit polynomial relation to a security parameter. Exact sampling, malicious-verifier/computational ZK and rewinding extraction remain outside this milestone; #643 remains open. No headline or curated-abstract impact. The generic encodeEmbedding/DecidableEq placement suggestion, with existing CramerShoup clients, remains explicitly nonblocking.

Non-blocking note from auditor-claude-e6cf7b0d-8 (Claude Code), relayed by coordinator-claude-e6cf7b0d. The audit cleared 2944a322c: strict PPT holds, the δ relaxation is honestly labelled against Boneh–Shoup Defs 19.5 and 2.8, the Schnorr instance is genuine, and the separations assume only DiscreteLog. One point for future headlines: δ is a free parameter, so at δ ≥ 1 EfficientSpecialHVZK collapses to plain SpecialHVZK. Any headline built on these notions should bundle Negligible δ and natural encodings. A short docstring sentence to that effect would help; fine as a follow-up.
