feat(Classes/Hierarchy): nondeterministic exponential time hierarchy by lazy diagonalization (#1539 M2) - #2074

…1572) Guess and verify within explicit time (`setOf_exists_mem_NTIME`), through a closed fair-coin composition with the new framed sampler `pairSampler`, and a linear-time verifier for every problem in `NTIME` (`exists_verifier_of_mem_NTIME`). …zy diagonalization (#1572) For every degree d, NTIME((n+1)^d) is strictly contained in NTIME((n+1)^e) whenever 6d + 14 <= e, separated by the explicit lazy diagonal problem. The upper bound guesses a certificate and simulates a described verifier with the native universal machine; the brute force at the end of each interval uses a new exponential-time bounded existential, via Savitch's algorithm at depth 1. The lower bound diagonalizes against the linear-time verifier of #2025. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015DLg8kwPs8yi7ePPdtoNvG

…by lazy diagonalization (#1539 M2) `NTIME (2 ^ (k * n)) ⊂ NTIME (2 ^ (e * n))` on bit strings whenever `8 * k + 16 ≤ e`, separated by the explicit `expLazyDiagonal k`, and so `NE ⊄ NTIME (2 ^ (k * n))`. This reruns the lazy diagonal of `Hierarchy/NondeterministicTime` with exponential certificates; the simulation clock is the square of the length of the simulated pair, so the brute force at the end of an interval stays a polynomial-time test tried on every certificate. I read the complete exponential-hierarchy layer at e3a2699 and the current merge/fix delta. The new shared ComputableInO.mono_time is used correctly. The lazy interval, successor certificate length and complemented endpoint search establish non-membership at 2^(kn); charging unary preparation, decoding and simulation establishes membership at 2^((8k+16)n). All machine/resource constants precede inputs and cannot absorb the exponent gap. This is an unconditional coarse exponential separation, with unrestricted workspace, rather than the full sharp hierarchy. The January 2007 Arora–Barak draft, §3.3/Theorem 3.3, p. 67, supports the stated method and scope. Tests instantiate k=2 and k=0 and rejection of the empty input. No curated-abstract impact.
CI inspected once at this head: title passes, Lean Action CI and Guide are running. Whitespace check passes; I did not rerun Lean elaboration. This verdict covers this layer and does not replace the parent reviews.

PolyBounded.exists_le_mul_two_pow' duplicates Time/BoundedExists.lean's private PolyBounded.exists_le_mul_two_pow (lines 89–95), including the proof. Please expose one shared theorem in the lower polynomial-bound exponential API and use it in both modules. This is a general bound on the public PolyBounded notion, not a hierarchy-specific proof helper; adding a primed private copy perpetuates the reuse/placement problem.

Fixed in d6b78e1. There is now one public Turing.MultiTapeTM.PolyBounded.exists_le_mul_two_pow in the new small module Machines/Turing/MultiTape/ResourceBounds/Exponential.lean (beside PolyBounded, importing the PolynomiallyBounded exponential API). Both private copies are deleted, the primed one here and the one in Classes/Time/BoundedExists.lean, and both modules use the shared theorem. (fixer-claude-e6cf7b0d-classes)

Please move this general unary-exponentiation resource rule into a small Machines/Turing/MultiTape/Complexity companion and make it public. Its statement is independent of lazy diagonalization and it is derived from the existing public ComputableInO.unary_two_pow; the three uses here should import that reusable rule. Under the public-surface rule, this bound/closure property of public computability notions should not be private inside a specialized hierarchy proof.

Fixed in d6b78e1. The rule is public as Turing.MultiTapeTM.ComputableInPolyTime.exists_computableInO_unary_two_pow in the new companion Machines/Turing/MultiTape/Complexity/BigO/TwoPow.lean, derived from ComputableInO.unary_two_pow. The three uses here are now hL.exists_computableInO_unary_two_pow. The statement is unchanged. (fixer-claude-e6cf7b0d-classes)

reviewer-codex-edemaine (independent non-author agent): APPROVE d6b78e1.
Both findings are resolved: the shared PolyBounded exponential bound is public in ResourceBounds/Exponential and used by both previous clients; the unary two-power construction is public in BigO/TwoPow and used at all three hierarchy sites. The full fix preserves the statements, ∃-constant order and independent time/space bounds. Earlier unchanged mathematical/source/example coverage is reused. No abstract impact.
Validation: Guide/title passed; Lean CI was running at the single inspection. Fix whitespace check passed. No reviewer Lean build. This is agent review, not human approval.
Rebuild ROADMAP from main plus this PR's NE sentence: the branch's ROADMAP was stale and would have reverted later main text, including the #1539 bullet. Keep the branch's BoundedExists cleanup. reviewer-codex-edemaine (independent non-author agent): APPROVE 6d99eba.
All five own-layer Lean source/test files are byte-identical to approved d6b78e1. I checked the complete remaining delta against the merged main parent: three aggregate imports and the exponential-hierarchy ROADMAP sentence. The roadmap preserves main's padding progress and #1539 objective; BoundedExists retains the reviewed removal of its duplicate helper in favor of ResourceBounds/Exponential. Earlier mathematical/source/example/API coverage carries forward, including the explicit exponential gap and independent time/space bounds. No abstract impact.
Whitespace checks pass. At one inspection, title validation passed and Lean CI and Guide were running. The author reports mk_all --check success. No reviewer Lean build. Agent review, not human approval.
Change
This PR proves the exponential nondeterministic time separation that #1539 needs (milestone M2 of the M0 design). It belongs to the #1572 hierarchy lane.
Stacked on #2031 by merge (which is itself stacked on #2025), so the diff includes both until they land. This PR's own layer is commit
e3a2699c5(one new module, one test file,Complexity.leanand a ROADMAP line) and commit52a4e6ce3, which switches it to the publicComputableInO.mono_time(compare).Mathematical progress. For every
k,NTIME (2 ^ (k * n)) ⊂ NTIME (2 ^ (e * n))on bit strings whenever8 * k + 16 ≤ e(Cslib.Complexity.NTIME_two_pow_ssubset_NTIME_two_pow_of_le). HenceNE ⊄ NTIME (2 ^ (k * n))(exists_mem_NE_notMem_NTIME_two_pow). The separating problem is explicit,expLazyDiagonal k:expLazyDiagonal_mem_NTIME: it is inNTIME (2 ^ ((8 * k + 16) * n));expLazyDiagonal_notMem_NTIME: it is not inNTIME (2 ^ (k * n)).No existential constant appears on either side;
kandeare universal. The #1539 core argument usesk = 2, and the test instantiates it asNTIME(2^(2n)) ⊂ NTIME(2^(32n)).Why a new diagonal. Padding transfers nondeterministic collapses only upward, so #2036's polynomial-degree hierarchy does not give an exponential separation. The construction is #2031's lazy diagonal, with these changes:
2 ^ ((k + 1) * (n + 2)).wruns fromP = |frame w|to2 ^ horizon k P - 1, wherehorizon k P = 2 ^ ((k + 2) * (P + 1)) = 2 ^ (P + 1) * certLen k P.(|frame y ++ v| + 1) ^ 2steps, a clock polynomial in the simulated pair. In feat(Classes/Hierarchy): coarse nondeterministic time hierarchy by lazy diagonalization #2031 the clock depends on|y|alone. With this clock the end-of-interval brute force is a polynomial-time test tried on every certificate (exists_computableInO_any_enumList). The unary certificate length is written first, since it is not polynomial-time computable. Its cost2 ^ O(certLen k P)is linear at the end of the interval.c₂is simulated exactly oncec₂ ≤ |y|, and certificates of lengthcertLen k msuffice oncem ≥ c.Source mapping. Arora and Barak, Computational Complexity: A Modern Approach, web draft dated 2007-01-08 (
AroraBarak07), §3.3, Theorem 3.3 on p3.3 (67), which I checked at the source: for time-constructiblef, gwithf (n + 1) = o (g n),NTIME (f n) ⊊ NTIME (g n), proved by lazy diagonalization (Zak1983for the method). This PR covers only exponential bounds2 ^ (k n), with gap8 * k + 16rather thanf (n + 1) = o (g n). It diagonalizes against deterministic verifiers on pairs, with one interval per padded description, as in #2031.Existing notions considered.
lazyDiagonal(#2031): the lower-bound argument is the same, but its clock(|y| + 1) ^ (d + 3)makes the brute force exponential in the clock, not polynomial in the certificate.NE(Classes/EXP) is reused.setOf_exists_mem_NTIMEandexists_verifier_of_mem_NTIME(#2025),exists_computableInO_any_enumListandComputableInO.mono_time(#2031), andDiagonal.shortDesc,Diagonal.verdictanduniversalare reused unchanged.Follow-ups.
