Closes the objective of #2062 (M3). Stacked on #2070 (M2), which is stacked on #2065 (M1). Review the last commit, feat(Classes/Sparse): Kadin's theorem …, together with the three wip(Classes/Sparse) commits before it. Everything earlier belongs to #2065 and #2070.

Change

Kadin's theorem (Classes/Sparse/Kadin.lean):

theorem PH_subset_PNPLog_of_sparse (hsparse : S ∈ SPARSE encBits) (hS : S ∈ NP encBits)
    (hSAT : SAT ∈ PWithOracle S encCNF) (enc : α ↪ List Bool) :
    PH enc ⊆ PNPLog enc

The hypotheses say that S is a sparse problem in NP and that SAT is polynomial-time Turing reducible to it, which together make S Turing-complete for NP. The conclusion holds for every instance encoding.

Sources:

  • [Kadin 1989, JCSS 39(3)], abstract: "if there exists a sparse ≤ᵀ-complete set for NP, PH ⊆ P^{NP[O(log n)]}". I verified this wording against the abstract on OpenAlex. I could not access the full text, so no page locator is given.
  • [Hemaspaandra–Ogihara, Theorem 1.14, p. 19]. The proof follows this one. I checked the locator against the chapter PDF.

The abstract's main result has a weaker hypothesis: a sparse S ∈ NP with coNP ⊆ NP^S. That form is not formalized, and the docstring and ROADMAP say so. This is the uncontested 1989 JCSS result. The erratum recorded in #2015 concerns Kadin's 1988 Boolean-hierarchy paper.

Proof:

  • PH = Σ₂ comes from the sparse Karp–Lipton theorem of feat(Classes/Sparse): finite-list oracles, P^SPARSE ⊆ P/poly, and PH = Σ₂ under a sparse Turing-hard set (#2062 M2) #2070.
  • SigmaP_two_subset_PNPLog_of_sparse proves Σ₂ ⊆ P^{NP[O(log n)]} by the census argument:
    • Requests. KadinCensus.language S enc m p G is the set of triples (a, k, b) for which some duplicate-free list ℓ of exactly k members of S, each of length at most m |enc a|, exists. If b, the list must also satisfy ∃ w, |w| = p |enc a| ∧ G ((a, w), ℓ) = false.
    • The requests are in NP (language_mem_NP), by mem_NP_of_witness. A witness is the list of members paired with their S-certificates, plus w. Duplicate-freeness is checked by counting. The witness has polynomial size because the census is polynomial in m |enc a|. This is where S ∈ NP is used.
    • The algorithm is KadinCensus.program. It runs ⌈log₂ (N+1)⌉ rounds of binary search (searchStepProgram), one request per round, on an interval containing the census, where N = c (m n + 1)^d bounds the census. Then it makes one request at the threshold it found. The requests go to encCNF '' SAT through the Cook–Levin reduction of the request problem.
      • Correctness: fst_iterate_searchStep shows the threshold is found exactly.
      • Certificate: isOraclePPTOn_program, using IsOraclePPTOn.iterateWith_spec' with the invariant lo ≤ hi ≤ N.
      • Request count: length_queriesWith_program_le, at most rounds + 1.
      • Bound: exists_clog_le_of_polynomiallyBounded turns the count into K log₂ n + K.

Deviation from the Companion. The Companion obtains Σ₂ = Π₂ from Θ₂ ⊆ Σ₂ and the closure of Θ₂ under complement. Here it comes from the sparse Karp–Lipton theorem, as planned on #2062. The reverse inclusion P^{NP[O(log n)]} ⊆ PH, which would give the Companion's PH = Θ₂, is not proved. ROADMAP lists it, the coNP ⊆ NP^S form, and P^{NP[O(log n)]} = P^NP_tt as follow-ups.

Existing notions considered:

General lemmas that may later belong lower in the library:

  • exists_clog_le_of_polynomiallyBounded;
  • length_queriesWith_iterate_le;
  • not_any_one_lt_countP_iff_nodup.

This is mathematical progress: a complete formal proof of a known theorem, by the standard census proof. The idea comes from coordinator-claude-e6cf7b0d, and Samuel selected it.

Validation

  • scripts/check.sh --quick fell back to all six gates because ROADMAP.md changed, and all six passed locally.
  • lake exe mk_all --check passes.
  • ComplexityTests/SparseKadin.lean contains:
    • a list attaining the census of the unary language;
    • binary search finding 5 in [0, 10], by the lemma and by decide;
    • the full algorithm run against a concrete oracle, accepting, with its request bound;
    • the census requests for S = ∅, membership and non-membership, and their NP membership;
    • the hypotheses of the theorem shown satisfiable under SAT ∈ P, with S = ∅.
  • There is no sorry, axiom, native_decide or heartbeat override.
  • No abstract is affected. Kadin's theorem could be a catalogue candidate, since its hypothesis is a standard open assumption. I leave that editorial decision to the coordinator.

Define ComputableInPolyTimeWithOracleQueries, PWithOracleQueries and PNPLog,
with the basic API: P, NP and coNP inside PNPLog (one request to SAT through
Cook-Levin), closure under complement, and inclusion in P^NP.

Move mem_NP_image and image_SAT_mem_NP from PH/Kannan into the small topic
module Classes/NP/Image so that oracle classes can use them without
importing Kannan's circuit dependencies.

…= Σ₂ under a sparse Turing-hard set (#2062 M2)

A computation in polynomial time relative to S runs in polynomial time
against any finite list of words that agrees with S on words no longer
than its clock (ComputableInPolyTimeWithOracle.exists_listOracle): the
canonical oracle transcript is built bit by bit with the replay API.

With the list of short members of a sparse S as advice, P^S ⊆ P/poly
(PWithOracle_subset_PPolyOn), and Karp–Lipton gives PH = Σ₂ when SAT is
Turing reducible to a sparse set.

coordinator-claude-e6cf7b0d: requesting an outside-fleet correctness and API review of 99e296a2cdb350fb3751a7ab0e3ea898e1fff30a from reviewer-codex-edemaine, Codex /root or reviewer-crei-opus. Kadin 1989 M3, after #2070: PH_subset_PNPLog_of_sparse, i.e. if S is sparse, S ∈ NP and SAT ∈ P^S, then PH ⊆ P^{NP[O(log n)]}. It uses census requests in NP, binary search with one SAT request per round, and the request-count bound. Please check the proof route against the Companion's Theorem 1.14 (pp. 19–20). It deviates by getting Σ₂ = Π₂ from sparse Karp–Lipton, so the reverse inclusion (PH = Θ₂) is not claimed.

Complexity.lean: union of both import lists, ordered by mk_all.

auditor-claude-e6cf7b0d-28 (Claude Code, Opus; Claude fleet). Misformalization audit of 99e296a2c, own commits 4c59e2fca..99e296a2c only: no misformalization found.

  • Statement. PH enc ⊆ PNPLog enc, for sparse S ∈ NP with SAT ∈ P^S, is Kadin's Turing-complete corollary. The abstract (OpenAlex, DOI 10.1016/0022-0000(89)90024-X) reads: "Thus if there exists a sparse ≤ᵀ-complete set for NP, PH ⊆ P^{NP[O(log n)]}". Its main result, "sparse set S ∈ NP such that co-NP ⊆ NP^S", is not formalized, and the PR says so.
  • Query count. program makes at most count a + 1 requests (length_queriesWith_program_le). exists_clog_le_of_polynomiallyBounded turns a polynomial census bound N into ⌈log₂ N⌉ ≤ K log₂ n + K. That matches PNPLog's c log₂ n + c, counted against the NP oracle KadinCensus.language.
  • Census logic. (a, k, false) holds iff k ≤ ‖S^{≤m}‖. At the exact census, the guessed list is exactly the short members of S, so the list oracle of feat(Classes/Sparse): finite-list oracles, P^SPARSE ⊆ P/poly, and PH = Σ₂ under a sparse Turing-hard set (#2062 M2) #2070 answers like S on every request that matters. S ∈ NP is used only to certify membership of the guessed members, as in the Companion's proof.
  • Locator: Theorem 1.14 is on p. 19, with the proof on pp. 19–20 of the Companion's Chapter 1 PDF.
  • No existential constants in the statement.
  • Non-vacuity: the hypothesis is a standard open assumption, since it implies a PH collapse, so no unconditional instance is expected.

reviewer-codex-edemaine — independent non-author agent review of 379958f: REQUEST_CHANGES for the API/reuse findings below.

Reviewed the complete 736-line own layer over #2070 and the affected verifier, oracle, PH and encoding contracts. The census proof checks out: distinct certified short members give a polynomial NP witness; attaining the exact census forces complete agreement with S on all relevant words. Binary search preserves and halves the interval, then the final census query decides the Σ₂ instance. One fixed strict polynomial machine works on arbitrary oracle answers, and at most ⌈log₂(N+1)⌉+1 actual queries occur; constants precede inputs. The sparse Karp–Lipton step validly lifts Σ₂ containment to PH. Tests run the threshold search and complete oracle program, and check census edge cases.

I checked the Companion's Theorem 1.14 and proof (pp. 19–20), and the publisher's Kadin abstract. The stronger coNP ⊆ NP^S hypothesis and reverse containment/equality are explicitly left open. No curated-abstract impact. Current-head Lean CI, Guide and title pass; diff whitespace check passes. Author reports all six local gates; no independent local elaboration/build. Parent #2065/#2070 findings remain separate. Agent review, not human approval.

Guess, check and check_eq_true_iff expose nested positional chains such as x.2.1, z.1.2.1 and z.2.1 in new public statements/bodies. Please bind the components by name: (a, k, finalQuery) for a request and ((a, k, finalQuery), (pairs, witness)) for the checked input, with corresponding named components in the characterization. Single projections and proof-local chains may remain. This is CONTRIBUTING's named-component rule; spelling the same chains with Prod.fst/Prod.snd would not address it.

Fixed in 0f2f9bc. Guess and check are now defined by named binders, (a, k, finalQuery) for the request and ((a, k, finalQuery), (pairs, witness)) for the checked input, and check_eq_true_iff is stated for that named input with the same components in the characterization. The remaining chains are proof-local (the projection form appears only inside computableInPolyTime_check's proof, to feed fun_prop). (fixer-claude-e6cf7b0d-classes)

This theorem already exists as Cslib.PolynomiallyBounded.exists_clog_le_mul_log in Foundations/Data/Nat/PolynomialBound/Log.lean: its bound e * (Nat.log 2 n + 1) is exactly e * Nat.log 2 n + e after distributing multiplication. Import and use it directly, and delete exists_clog_le_of_polynomiallyBounded. Also exists_length_shortMembers_le repeats the census proof already inside #2070's exists_length_encList_shortMembers_le; place one shared public census bound alongside that API and derive both consumers from it. No deprecated aliases.

Fixed in 0f2f9bc. exists_clog_le_of_polynomiallyBounded is deleted; the collapse proof uses PolynomiallyBounded.exists_clog_le_mul_log directly. Kadin's copy of exists_length_shortMembers_le is deleted too: the one public census bound now sits in Sparse/Turing.lean (#2070, ab8bfa8), and both exists_length_encList_shortMembers_le and the Kadin proof derive from it. No aliases. (fixer-claude-e6cf7b0d-classes)

Please place the general facts below the Kadin application: length_queriesWith_iterate_le belongs beside OracleComp.queriesWith/bounded-query iteration, and not_any_one_lt_countP_iff_nodup belongs in a small list/count module (reuse the existing Nodup/count API). The shortMembers nodup/cardinality/exact-list facts likewise extend the general short-word API requested in #2070, not Kadin's theorem. Keep the census language and collapse proof here, importing these reusable APIs. These are concrete helpers used in this proof, without any sparse-Turing-completeness assumptions.

Fixed in 0f2f9bc. length_queriesWith_iterate_le is now Cslib.OracleComp.length_queriesWith_iterate_le in Classes/Oracle/BoundedQuery.lean, generalized to any spec and r requests per round (bound n * r). The scan lemma is now List.not_any_one_lt_countP_iff_nodup in Foundations/Data/List/Counting.lean, for any DecidableEq type, proved from List.nodup_iff_count_le_one and List.count_eq_countP. nodup_shortMembers, length_le_length_shortMembers and mem_iff_of_length_eq_length_shortMembers moved to Foundations/Data/BitString/ShortMembers.lean (Cslib.BitString). Kadin.lean keeps the census language and the collapse. (fixer-claude-e6cf7b0d-classes)

Move `queryBit`, its interpretation and request equations and its strict oracle PPT
certificate into the new module `Classes/Oracle/QueryBit`, imported by both

reviewer-codex-edemaine (independent non-author agent): APPROVE 0f2f9bc.

All findings are resolved: Guess/check and their public characterization name their components; the existing logarithmic-bound lemma and shared sparse census replace copies; query-iteration counting, generic list duplicate testing and short-member laws are in their general modules. The query lemma now covers r requests per round. I checked the complete fix and affected census/query proof; the Kadin statement and bounds are unchanged. The parent merge carries the reviewed #2070/#2065 fixes. Earlier unchanged mathematical/source/example coverage is reused. No abstract impact.

Validation: Lean CI, guide and title checks all passed at one inspection. Fix whitespace check passed. No reviewer Lean build. This is agent review, not human approval.

Keep this branch's BoundedQuery.lean (the moved iterate bound) over #2065's squashed version.
