Why

GitHub Trending mixes old and new projects and has no categories. GitHub search can rank by stars but knows nothing about momentum. GitHub Stars Radar puts three questions side by side, each split by category and language:

  • New: which repositories created this week, month or year got the most stars?
  • Hot: which repositories, of any age, gained the most stars today, this week or this month?
  • All-time: which repositories are the biggest overall?

Features

🌱 New Repositories created in the last 7, 30 or 365 days, ranked by stars
🔥 Hot Repositories of any age ranked by stars gained today, this week or this month
🏆 All-time The most-starred repositories overall
🗂️ Categories AI dev skills, AI tools, AI agents, mobile, web, plus 14 languages

🔗 Shareable views Every view has its own link, e.g. #/hot/week/lang/rust
📱 Responsive Table on desktop, compact cards on phones

How it works

flowchart LR
    cron["⏰ GitHub Actions<br/>every 6 hours"] --> fetch["scripts/fetch.mjs"]
    fetch -- "new + all-time<br/>sort:stars" --> api[("GitHub<br/>Search API")]
    fetch -- "hot<br/>stars gained" --> trending[("github.com<br/>/trending")]
    fetch -- "hot: repo details" --> gql[("GitHub<br/>GraphQL API")]
    fetch --> json["site/data/repos.json"]
    json --> commit["commit to main"]
    commit --> pages["🚀 GitHub Pages"]
    pages --> user["👩‍💻 You"]

  • New and all-time use the Search API. scripts/fetch.mjs runs one search per topic or language (and per period for new), merges the results and keeps the top 50 of each list. The search API cannot OR topics together, which is why it runs one query per topic.
  • Hot uses GitHub Trending, the only public source of stars gained in a period. The script reads the daily, weekly and monthly pages for every language, fetches topics and details for those repositories in a few GraphQL calls, and sorts each category by stars gained. Trending lists about 25 repositories per page, so hot lists are shorter than the others.
  • The site is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript: no framework, no bundler, no build step.

Run it locally

Requirements: Node.js 18+ and, optionally, the GitHub CLI for a token.

git clone https://github.com/dab246/github-stars-radar.git
cd github-stars-radar

# 1. Fetch fresh data (about 8 minutes because of the search rate limit)
GITHUB_TOKEN=$(gh auth token) node scripts/fetch.mjs

# 2. Serve the static site
python3 -m http.server -d site 8000   # open http://localhost:8000

Tip

Only working on the UI? Skip step 1. site/data/repos.json is already committed.

Contributing

Contributions of every size are welcome, from fixing a typo to adding a new category. Ideas to get started:

  • 🗂️ Add a category or language. Add an entry to CATEGORIES / LANGUAGES in scripts/fetch.mjs and a label to I18N in site/app.js.
  • 🌐 Add a translation. Copy the en block in I18N and translate it.
  • 🎨 Improve the UI. Light theme, sorting by forks, a "new this week" badge…
  • 🐛 Fix a bug or improve accessibility.

Read the contributing guide for the workflow, and browse the good first issues.
