fix(sessions): hibernation must not strand a turn that got new input (#883) - #902
Symptom: a Claude session could receive a user message after hibernate-verify passed and before kill_session, then be killed and left stopped with the message unanswered.
Fix:hibernate-verify now returns a quiet fingerprint (transcript state, lease, watch, WhatsApp routing — not the registry entry or state file that parking itself rewrites). New hibernate-quiet command re-checks it. hibernate_one checks before the kill (skips a pointless kill) and after it (closes the remaining window, since the runtime is gone and cannot take more input). On movement it undoes our own stopped marker, so the supervisor resumes the exact same conversation, and returns 1 so the waiting spawn is not told a slot was freed.
Tests: two regressions in tests/test-session-capacity.py inject native input after verification and during the kill, beside the existing activation race test. Both fail on master; all 34 pass. Generated module, native expected and golden regenerated.
…e kill (#883)
Re-check transcript/routing quiescence just before and just after
kill_session; on movement, undo the stopped marker so the supervisor
resumes the same conversation.

Session hibernation now records a quiet-state fingerprint and rechecks it around runtime termination. If the fingerprint changes, the hibernation flow undoes its transition and returns failure. New tests cover input arriving during both recheck windows.
Changes: Hibernation quiet-state verification

Summary
Quiet fingerprint and candidate verification modules/agent-box.nix, modules/src/lib/session-hibernation.py, tests/golden/vm/payloads/agent-box-session-capacity/bin/agent-box-session-capacity
The probe adds a quiet fingerprint based on transcript, lease, watch, and WhatsApp evidence. Candidate verification can re-probe a stopped session in parked mode and rejects it when the fingerprint differs.
Quiet recheck and hibernation transition modules/src/session-capacity-cli.py, modules/src/session-cli.sh, tests/golden/vm/payloads/agent-box-session-capacity/bin/agent-box-session-capacity, tests/golden/vm/payloads/agent-box-session/bin/agent-box-session
The capacity CLI adds hibernate-quiet. hibernate_one checks the fingerprint before and after killing the session, and undoes its hibernation transition if a check fails.
Tests inject user input during session listing or session termination and verify that hibernation fails without leaving stopped or hibernation metadata set.
defangdevs/agent-box#916 — Updates hibernation_probe eligibility, which is also used by the new parked-session checks.

The hibernation fix is mergeable with a test follow-up, but the regression test does not yet prove that input arriving during termination reopens the same conversation.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: hibernation is fixed so it does not strand a turn that received new input. The raw summary confirms the quiet fingerprint, the hibernate-quiet recheck, and the undo on state change, which all serve that goal. The title is specific and uses the conventional prefix. It omits the quiet-fingerprint mechanism, which is expected for a short title.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is closely related to the changeset. It states the symptom (a user message arriving after verification and before kill), the fix (a quiet fingerprint, a hibernate-quiet re-check, checks before and after the kill, and undoing the stopped marker on movement), and the regression tests added to tests/test-session-capacity.py. These match the raw summary of changes.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #883 is the active directly linked issue. The changes add a quiet fingerprint for transcript, lease, watch, and WhatsApp routing state. hibernate_one checks the fingerprint before and after termination and waits for pane processes to exit. If activity changes or a process remains, it undoes its hibernation markers and returns 1. The new tests cover input after verification and input during kill-session. They verify failure, marker removal, and preservation of the user message and live session where applicable. These changes satisfy the required cancellation or durable same-conversation activation behavior.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files support Issue #883. They implement quiet-state verification, the hibernate-quiet command, rollback during hibernation, generated artifacts, and regression tests. No unrelated product behavior or unrelated refactoring is shown.

…kill quiet check (#883)
tmux kill-session returns when the session is destroyed, not when the
native process has exited, so a last transcript write could land after the
second quiet snapshot and strand the turn. Wait (bounded) for the pane pids
and their process groups first.

Pushed: if the bounded wait times out with a pane process still alive, we now call _undo_hibernation and return 1 instead of trusting the quiet check. Generated module, golden and native fixtures regenerated. I did not add a VM regression for a writer that outlives the timeout: the sessions testscript is near its size cap and the race needs a 5s wait. Say if you want one.
Yes, I received the events. I looked at each failure.
The only failing job is VM (webhook). "Validate module & VM" fails only because that job failed.
The error is the same each time: expected a quiet status … installed_plugins.json has no local-webhook@local-channels entry (tests/webhook.nix, status()).
It also fails on the unrelated branch codex/231-email-intake (run 40426599144). This PR changes only hibernation code, so it does not cause the error.
I merged master into this branch and pushed 3694208. The error did not go away.

… hibernation wait (#883)
A webhook spawn's PATH carries no procps, so the wait fell back to the pane pid alone.

Add a supervisor-backed same-conversation assertion.
This fixture invokes session-cli.sh with a fake tmux; it does not run the supervisor. The kill branch clears TEST_LIVE_FILE, and the test checks only marker removal and the appended transcript record. It can therefore pass when no pane is recreated or when the recreated pane uses a different native session.
The existing activation-race test checks only registry markers. Add a supervisor-backed assertion that the pane is recreated and that its native session identifier remains 44444444-4444-4444-8444-444444444444.
