test(webhook): quiesce tmux after stopping supervisor (#893) - #932
Symptom: the webhook VM test fails with expected a quiet status ... installed_plugins.json has no local-webhook@local-channels entry, then passes on rerun (post-merge runs 39330932921, 40421752823; PR runs 40420337799, 40424988642).
Cause: systemctl stop agent-box@agent.service does not stop the tmux server. A lingering pane can respawn the env-exec wrapper, and its plugin sync rewrites the hand-written fixture. The second failure in the issue (agent-box-session rm exit 2) looks like the same race.
Fix: after each stop, kill the agent's tmux server and wait until no tmux process is left. The stand-in peer is its own webhook-peer unit, so the live: 1 assertion is unaffected. Test script is 114006 bytes against the 127000 limit.
Not verified: I could not boot the VM test on this aarch64 box, so the proof is a green CI run, ideally a few. The failure was intermittent.
Stopping agent-box@agent.service leaves its tmux server running; a lingering
pane can respawn the env-exec wrapper, whose plugin sync rewrites the
hand-written installed_plugins.json fixture and makes status() report no
local-webhook entry (#893). Kill the server and wait for it to exit before
mutating the cache, at both stop points.

Walkthrough
The webhook test now stops agent-owned tmux activity after stopping the supervisor. It does this before modifying plugin-cache fixtures and before a later webhook delivery.
Changes: Webhook test session quiescence
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Quiesce sessions before test actions tests/webhook.nix
Adds a helper that kills the agent’s tmux server and waits up to 30 seconds for agent-owned tmux processes to exit. The test calls it before changing plugin-cache fixtures and before a later webhook delivery.
defangdevs/agent-box#931 — Reports the same webhook test failure caused by a writer changing installed_plugins.json; this change quiesces tmux processes before the test actions.

The webhook VM test can still edit its fixture before tmux exits, leaving the reported test race unresolved. Correct the wait before merging.

Explanation
The title "test(webhook): quiesce tmux after stopping supervisor (#893)" matches the main change. The PR kills the agent's tmux server and waits for tmux processes to exit after each supervisor stop in the webhook VM test. The title is specific and follows a conventional commit style. The issue number in the title is a minor addition and does not affect the assessment.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is directly related to the changeset. It names the failing webhook VM test (issue #893) and gives the cause: stopping the agent-box service does not stop the tmux server, and a lingering pane can rewrite the plugin fixture. It also states the fix, which kills the agent's tmux server after each stop and waits until no tmux process remains. It notes the change was not verified locally on aarch64.

Explanation
The whole-PR diff against the merge base changes only tests/webhook.nix, with +14 lines and no other files. Both hunks sit in the webhook VM test, next to the two 'systemctl stop agent-box@agent.service' calls that the issue concerns. The added helper and calls implement the quiescing step requested in #893. No unrelated module, unit, or Buzz ACP code (#889 / #892) is changed. The changes stay within the issue scope.

Explanation
Issue #893 requires the webhook VM test to wait until session and plugin-sync writers are quiescent before it edits installed_plugins.json, or to isolate the fixture. The diff to tests/webhook.nix adds quiesce_sessions() after both 'systemctl stop agent-box@agent.service' calls (before the fixture writes and before the delivery-spawn check). It runs 'tmux -L agent-box kill-server' with TMUX_TMPDIR=/run/agent-box-agent, then 'wait_until_succeeds("! pgrep -u agent -x tmux", timeout=30)'. This implements the requested wait shape. Three points are not established by the reviewed evidence: (1) The golden unit tests/golden/vm/units/agent-box@agent.service already sets ExecStop to '/nix/store/...-tmux-3.7c/bin/tmux -L agent-box kill-server' without TMUX_TMPDIR. This conflicts with the PR premise that 'systemctl stop' does not stop the tmux server. (2) The TMUX_TMPDIR=/run/agent-box-agent value is not checked against the socket path the agent session server uses. If the path differs, kill-server does not reach the live server. (3) The wait checks only tmux processes. It does not check env-exec wrapper or claude child processes that could write installed_plugins.json. The PR states that the VM test was not run. Whether the fix removes the race is therefore unknown from source evidence alone.
Resolution
Confirm from the module or supervisor source which directory and socket the agent tmux server uses, and confirm that TMUX_TMPDIR=/run/agent-box-agent matches it. Confirm whether the existing ExecStop kill-server already runs on stop, and reconcile that with the stated cause. Confirm that no env-exec or plugin-sync process survives the wait, or extend the wait to those processes. Then rely on the VM webhook test results across several CI runs, as the PR description proposes.
