Enabling email on a native box starts agent-box-email.service, then activation cleanup stops its required agent-box-email-source@<user>.service because the renderer omitted the source from its declared units. Systemd consequently stops SMTP, apply fails, and an update can roll back.

Declare enabled email source services alongside the listener so activation starts and verifies them and cleanup only stops removed sources. Add a regression that exercises activation with an enabled and a removed source; it fails on the previous code. Document OpenSMTPD's root ownership requirement for certificate/key files, encountered during the same live setup.

Validation:

  • python3 tests/test_email.py (11 passed; regression failed before the fix)
  • python3 tests/test_agentbox.py (161 tests, one skipped)
  • nix build -L --keep-going .#ci-native --max-jobs 4 --cores 1 --no-link (passed)
  • Live native setup: verified STARTTLS certificate, successful delivery to retained bus content, and SMTP rejection of unknown recipients, plus-addressing, and external relay.

No networking defaults change.

Walkthrough

The renderer now includes generated email-source units in its unit list. An activation test checks the enabled and removed source units. The email documentation adds OpenSMTPD certificate ownership guidance.

Changes: Email source activation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track email-source units and verify activation
bin/agentbox, tests/test_email.py
Renderer.email adds generated email-source units to t.units. The activation test checks that the enabled Alice unit starts, the removed Bob unit stops, and activation reports no failures.

Email certificate guidance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Document certificate ownership
docs/email.md
The documentation says that when the certificate manager is not root, a root-managed renewal hook must validate and copy the matching certificate/key pair into a private mail directory, then restart the mail service. It also states that OpenSMTPD rejects Caddy-owned files.

# Troubleshooting OpenSMTPd

## Ruleset Evaluation

To view how your smtpd.conf ruleset is evaluated:

    # smtpd -d -T rules

## File Permissions

OpenBSD strictly checks ownership and file permissions listed in `/etc/mtree/special` as part of its security checks. An error message similar to below indicates a permissions error:

    Jul 17 14:46:18 example smtpd[20780]: info: OpenSMTPD 7.7.0 starting
    Jul 17 14:46:18 example smtpd[17229]: dkimsign: Can't open key file (/etc/mail/dkim/private.key): Permission denied
    Jul 17 14:46:18 example smtpd[42894]: warn: lost processor: dkimsign exited abnormally
    Jul 17 14:46:18 example smtpd[42894]: Exiting

This indicates a file permissions issue with DKIM Make sure to re-read the DKIM guide and properly set file ownership and permissions.

## Outbound Mail Filtering

At times, OpenSMTPd may be unable to connect because outgoing packets are being filtered. For example, suppose OpenSMTPd attempts to send a letter to Yahoo. </excerpt>

# Bug#1032384: smtp: SSL_CTX_load_verify_locations: No suck file or directory

    Package: opensmtpd
    Version: 6.8.0p2-3
    Severity: normal
    Tags: patch

    On Debian Bullseye attempting to send a test mail from the command line
    using the “smtp” program included in the “opensmtpd” package results in
    the error message:

        smtp: SSL_CTX_load_verify_locations: No suck file or directory

    The cause of this error message is a missing “/usr/lib/ssl/cert.pem”
    file, which was, according to its changelog, only added to the “openssl”
    package in version 3.0.5-3 [1]; this version is not available in the stable
    archive. The path “/usr/lib/ssl/cert.pem” is passed to
    “SSL_CTX_load_verify_locations in “smtpc.c:145” (it is the result of the
    call to “X509_get_default_cert_file” [2]):

        if (!SSL_CTX_load_verify_locations(ssl_ctx,
            X509_get_default_cert_file(), NULL))

# OpenSMTPD

> Warning This repository may be out of date compared to OpenBSD smtpd source code. Downstream package maintainers should be aware of this when backporting security fixes and other changes.

OpenSMTPD is a FREE implementation of the server-side SMTP protocol as defined by RFC 5321, with some additional standard extensions.

It allows ordinary machines to exchange e-mails with other systems speaking the SMTP protocol.

OpenSMTPD runs on various Unix and Unix-like operating systems including:

  * Linux
  * FreeBSD
  * OpenBSD
  * NetBSD
  * DragonFlyBSD
  * macOS

For more information: http://www.opensmtpd.org/portable.html

If you are looking for a comprehensive manual on how to build your own mail server visit our wiki.

  * visit GitHub's discussions page

## Documentation

The manual pages are available online, which you are encouraged to contribute to.

## Install via package manager

Many distributions already provide a packaged version of opensmtpd. All you need to do is install it via your package manager.

> Warning Some distributions might ship old versions of OpenSMTPD, and some distributions may selectively backport security fixes and other code changes.

### Debian/Ubuntu

    `sudo apt install opensmtpd
    `

### Archlinux

Has a dedicated wiki page

### Alpine Linux

    `apk install opensmtpd
    `

### Fedora

    `yum install opensmtpd
    `

### openSUSE Tumbleweed

    `zypper install OpenSMTPD
    `

### macOS

OpenSMTPD is available from MacPorts:

    `port install opensmtpd
    `

## Install via container

Container images available at this repo's packages page.

## Install from source

### Install dependencies

OpenSMTPD relies on:

  * pkgconf or pkg-config
  * libevent
  * libressl or OpenSSL

When not building from a release tarball (e.g. from the git repository), the following dependencies are needed too:

  * autoconf
  * automake
  * bison or byacc
  * libtool

By default OpenSMTPD expects latest versions of all dependencies unless noted otherwise.

Note that some distributions have different packages for a same library, you should always use the `-dev` or `-devel` package (for example, `libevent-dev` or `libevent-devel`) if you're going to build OpenSMTPD yourself.

### Get the source code

Clone from github:

    `git clone https://github.com/OpenSMTPD/OpenSMTPD.git
    `

Download tarball

Latest release can always be found here

### Compile

    `cd opensmtpd*
    ./bootstrap # Only if you build from git sources
    ./configure
    make
    sudo make install
    `

#### Special notes for macOS

Please launch configure with special directive about libevent directory:

    `./configure --with-libevent=/opt/local
    `

Though macOS includes a copy of bison in the bases system, you will need to install a more recent version from, e.g., MacPorts.

### Install

    `sudo make install
    `

### Setup historical interface

OpenSMTPD provides a single utility `smtpctl` to control the daemon and the local submission subsystem.

To accommodate systems that require historical interfaces such as `sendmail`, `newaliases` or `makemap`, the `smtpctl` utility can operate in compatibility mode if called with the historical name.

On mailwrapper-enabled systems, this is achieved by editing `/etc/mailer.conf` and adding the following lines:

    `sendmail        /usr/sbin/smtpctl
    send-mail       /usr/sbin/smtpctl
    mailq           /usr/sbin/smtpctl
    makemap         /usr/sbin/smtpctl
    newaliases      /usr/sbin/smtpctl
    `

Whereas on systems that don't provide mailwrapper, it can be achieved by setting the appropriate symbolic links:

    `ln -s /usr/sbin/smtpctl sendmail
    ln -s /usr/sbin/smtpctl send-mail
    ln -s /usr/sbin/smtpctl mailq
    ln -s /usr/sbin/smtpctl makemap
    ln -s /usr/sbin/smtpctl newaliases
    `

The OpenSMTPD project leaves it up to the package maintainers to setup the links in their packages as it is very hard for us to accommodate all systems with the preferred method in a clean way.

### Configure `/etc/smtpd.conf`

Please have a look at the complete format description of `smtpd.conf` configuration file

### Add OpenSMTPD users

To operate, OpenSMTPD requires at least one user, by default `_smtpd`; and preferably two users, by default `_smtpd` and `_smtpq`.

Using two users instead of one will increase security by a large factor so... if you want to voluntarily reduce security or you have absolute more faith in our code than we do, by all means use one.

The instructions below assume the default users however, the configure script allows overriding these using the options: `--with-user-smtpd`, `--with-user-queue`, and `--with-group-queue`.

#### NetBSD, Linux (Debian, Arch Linux, ...)

    `mkdir /var/empty
    useradd -c "SMTP Daemon" -d /var/empty -s /sbin/nologin _smtpd
    useradd -c "SMTPD Queue" -d /var/empty -s /sbin/nologin _smtpq
    `

#### DragonFlyBSD, FreeBSD

    `pw useradd _smtpd -c "SMTP Daemon" -d /var/empty -s /sbin/nologin
    pw useradd _smtpq -c "SMTPD Queue" -d /var/empty -s /sbin/nologin
    `

#### macOS

First we need a group with an unused GID below `500`, list the current ones used:

    `/usr/bin/dscl . -list /Groups PrimaryGroupID | sort -n -k2,2
    `

Add a group - here we have picked `444`:

    `/usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -create /Groups/_smtpd PrimaryGroupID 444
    `

Then the user. Again we need an unused UID below `500`, list the current ones used:

    `/usr/bin/dscl . -list /Users UniqueID | sort -n -k2,2
    `

Add a user - here we have picked `444`:

    `/usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -create /Users/_smtpd UniqueID 444
    /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -delete /Users/_smtpd AuthenticationAuthority
    /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -delete /Users/_smtpd PasswordPolicyOptions
    /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -delete /Users/_smtpd dsAttrTypeNative:KerberosKeys
    /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -delete /Users/_smtpd dsAttrTypeNative:ShadowHashData
    /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -create /Users/_smtpd RealName "SMTP Daemon"
    /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -create /Users/_smtpd Password "*"
    /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -create /Users/_smtpd PrimaryGroupID 444
    /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -create /Users/_smtpd NFSHomeDirectory /var/empty
    /usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -create /Users/_smtpd UserShell /usr/bin/false
    `

repeat for the `_smtpq` user.

### Launch smtpd

First, kill any running sendmail/exim/qmail/postfix or other.

Then:

    `smtpd
    `

or in debug and verbose mode

    `smtpd -dv
    `</excerpt>

L157: ## Description
L158:
L159: 【73†wizeman】
L160:
L161: opened 【74†on Oct 22, 2020】
L162:
L163: Issue body actions
L164: Describe the bug
L165: When upgrading from 20.03 to 20.09, opensmtpd stopped working (apparently) due to ownership changes in 【75†#91121】:
L166:
L167:     `Oct 22 14:40:01 hostname systemd[1]: Started opensmtpd.service.
L168:     Oct 22 14:40:03 hostname smtpd[758]: warn:  /var/lib/acme/mx.example.com/fullchain.pem: not owned by uid 0
L169: Oct 22 14:40:03 hostname smtpd[758]: smtpd: load_pki_tree: failed to load certificate file
L170:     Oct 22 14:40:03 hostname systemd[1]: opensmtpd.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
L171:     Oct 22 14:40:03 hostname systemd[1]: opensmtpd.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'.
L172:     `
L173: As you can see, opensmtpd seems to require the certificates to be owned by root.
L174: I tried adding `chown root fullchain.pem key.pem` to `security.acme.certs.postRun` but it seems that the ownership resets to `acme` when rebooting.
L175:
L176: To Reproduce
L177:
L178: 1. Configure acme to generate a certificate
L179: 2. Configure opensmtpd to use the certificate
L180:
L181: Expected behavior
L182: opensmtpd should start without errors.

L208: Hi,
L209:
L210: I'm using Caddy to generate and retrieve Keys and Certificates for a linux server (private LAN, no official certs). The keys and certs are under

L213: Copying the files to some other location and chowning them to root would not really help, since caddy updates these files every now and then.

## Install from source

### Install dependencies

OpenSMTPD relies on:

  * pkgconf or pkg-config
  * libevent
  * libressl or OpenSSL

When not building from a release tarball (e.g. from the git repository), the following dependencies are needed too:

  * autoconf
  * automake
  * bison or byacc
  * libtool

By default OpenSMTPD expects latest versions of all dependencies unless noted otherwise.

Note that some distributions have different packages for a same library, you should always use the `-dev` or `-devel` package (for example, `libevent-dev` or `libevent-devel`) if you're going to build OpenSMTPD yourself.

### Get the source code

Clone from github:

    `git clone https://github.com/OpenSMTPD/OpenSMTPD.git
    `

Download tarball

Latest release can always be found here

### Compile

    `cd opensmtpd*
    ./bootstrap # Only if you build from git sources
    ./configure
    make
    sudo make install
    `

#### Special notes for macOS

Please launch configure with special directive about libevent directory:

    `./configure --with-libevent=/opt/local
    `

Though macOS includes a copy of bison in the bases system, you will need to install a more recent version from, e.g., MacPorts.

### Install

    `sudo make install
    `

### Setup historical interface

OpenSMTPD provides a single utility `smtpctl` to control the daemon and the local submission subsystem.

To accommodate systems that require historical interfaces such as `sendmail`, `newaliases` or `makemap`, the `smtpctl` utility can operate in compatibility mode if called with the historical name.

On mailwrapper-enabled systems, this is achieved by editing `/etc/mailer.conf` and adding the following lines:

    `sendmail        /usr/sbin/smtpctl
    send-mail       /usr/sbin/smtpctl
    mailq           /usr/sbin/smtpctl
    makemap         /usr/sbin/smtpctl
    newaliases      /usr/sbin/smtpctl
    `

Whereas on systems that don't provide mailwrapper, it can be achieved by setting the appropriate symbolic links:

    `ln -s /usr/sbin/smtpctl sendmail
    ln -s /usr/sbin/smtpctl send-mail
    ln -s /usr/sbin/smtpctl mailq
    ln -s /usr/sbin/smtpctl makemap
    ln -s /usr/sbin/smtpctl newaliases
    `

The OpenSMTPD project leaves it up to the package maintainers to setup the links in their packages as it is very hard for us to accommodate all systems with the preferred method in a clean way.

### Configure `/etc/smtpd.conf`

Please have a look at the complete format description of `smtpd.conf` configuration file

### Add OpenSMTPD users

To operate, OpenSMTPD requires at least one user, by default `_smtpd`; and preferably two users, by default `_smtpd` and `_smtpq`.

Using two users instead of one will increase security by a large factor so... if you want to voluntarily reduce security or you have absolute more faith in our code than we do, by all means use one.

The instructions below assume the default users however, the configure script allows overriding these using the options: `--with-user-smtpd`, `--with-user-queue`, and `--with-group-queue`.

#### NetBSD, Linux (Debian, Arch Linux, ...)

    `mkdir /var/empty
    useradd -c "SMTP Daemon" -d /var/empty -s /sbin/nologin _smtpd
    useradd -c "SMTPD Queue" -d /var/empty -s /sbin/nologin _smtpq

Document the required file modes.

OpenSMTPD rejects certificate permission bits outside 0755 and key permission bits outside 0740. The renewal hook does not specify destination modes. A permissive copy can prevent agent-box-email.service from restarting and can expose the private key. Document explicit modes such as 0644 for the certificate and 0600 for the key.

`agent-box-email.service`. Private keys belong outside the Nix store. This
feature does not export Caddy's private key or change its renewal lifecycle.

OpenSMTPD requires both certificate and key files to be owned by root. If
your certificate manager runs as another user (such as Caddy), use a
root-managed renewal hook to validate and copy the matching certificate/key

only still-valid issues, skip the rest with a brief reason, keep changes
minimal, and validate.

Review comment at @docs/email.md around lines 25 - 26:
Update the renewal-hook guidance in the OpenSMTPD documentation to specify
destination modes of 0644 for the certificate and 0600 for the key when copying
the certificate/key pair into the private mail directory. Preserve the existing
ownership and service-restart guidance.

After applying the fix, consider running `coderabbit review --agent` for local
review. Visit https://docs.coderabbit.ai/cli?utm_source=ghpr
