Two guarantees this code already relies on, now pinned down.

The README sanitizer. It is the only thing between a profile README that somebody else wrote and the page, and it was trusted on inspection alone. The rules move out of GitHubReadmeQuery into App\Services\GitHubReadmeSanitizer — unchanged, but with nothing to inject, so they can be exercised without faking GitHub, the cache and a user.

tests/Unit/Services/GitHubReadmeSanitizerTest.php then holds them to the constructs that have defeated sanitizers before: script tags, handlers on images and details, javascript: and protocol-relative links, the svg and math mutation tricks, iframes carrying their own document, data uris, and styles that would let a README cover the page.

It also pins what must keep working, because a sanitizer that drops everything is safe and useless: headings with alignment, inline formatting, lists, and mailto: links.

Mass assignment. Unguard is on application-wide, so a model fills whatever it is handed. Nothing passes a request straight to one today, and that is the only thing standing between a stray ->update($request->all()) and a caller setting a column no form request validates. The new check in tests/Unit/ArchTest.php looks at what a write is handed first — the shape the mistake actually takes — after blanking strings and comments with PHP's own lexer, so that a raw SQL statement or prose quoting the pattern is not mistaken for one.

It does not follow a request copied into a variable first; review still has to catch that, and the test says so.

Verification

  • Ran the sanitizer directly against 21 payloads, outside the test suite: every dangerous marker absent, legitimate markup intact. Two assertions I first wrote were wrong and running them found it — mailto: survives with its @ entity-encoded, and the length cap truncates the input rather than refusing it.
  • Validated the guard in both directions: it catches seven planted forms, and reports nothing on app/ as it stands.
  • pint and phpstan at level max are clean.

The Pest suite itself was not run here — this environment has no pdo_pgsql, and RefreshDatabase is global — so CI is the first real run of both files.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • README content is now sanitized before display, removing unsafe markup and attributes while preserving supported formatting.
    • Links and images are restricted to supported destinations, and links receive safer default behavior.
    • Oversized README content is limited to help keep displayed content within bounds.

The rules that decide what survives from a GitHub README were private to
the query that fetches it, so the only way to exercise them was to fake
GitHub, the cache and a user. They are now a service with nothing to inject,
which the query delegates to; the rules themselves are unchanged.
The sanitizer is the only thing between a README someone else wrote and the
page, and it was trusted on inspection alone. This pins the behaviour against
the constructs that have defeated sanitizers before: script tags, handlers on
images and details, javascript and protocol-relative links, the svg and math
mutation tricks, iframes with their own document, data uris, and styles that
would let a README cover the page.

It also pins what must keep working, since a sanitizer that drops everything
is safe and useless: headings with alignment, inline formatting, lists, and
mailto links.

Two of these assertions were wrong when first written, and running them found
it: a mailto href survives but with its @ entity-encoded, and the length cap
truncates the input rather than refusing it.
Mass assignment protection is off application-wide, so a model fills whatever
it is handed. Nothing passes a request straight to one today, and that is the
only thing standing between a stray `->update($request->all())` and a caller
setting a column no form request validates.

The guard reads what a write is handed first, which is the shape the mistake
takes, after blanking strings and comments with PHP's own lexer so that a raw
SQL statement or prose quoting the pattern is not mistaken for one. It misses
a request copied into a variable first; review still has to catch that.

Walkthrough

The PR extracts README HTML sanitization from GitHubReadmeQuery into an injected GitHubReadmeSanitizer, with tests for markup, URLs, media, and input length. It also adds an architecture test that rejects direct request-data use in model write methods.

Changes: GitHub README Sanitization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sanitizer rules and validation
app/Services/GitHubReadmeSanitizer.php, tests/Unit/Services/GitHubReadmeSanitizerTest.php
The sanitizer applies markup, attribute, URL, media, and input-length rules. Tests cover rejected content, retained formatting, link attributes, allowed destinations, image hosts, and oversized input.
Query integration
app/Queries/GitHubReadmeQuery.php
GitHubReadmeQuery receives the sanitizer and uses it to process the response body instead of its local sanitization method.

Request-Data Model Write Guard

Layer / File(s) Summary
Model write architecture test
tests/Unit/ArchTest.php
The architecture test blanks string and comment tokens, then rejects specified direct request-data calls to model write methods in PHP files under app/.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Refactor

Possibly related issues

  • dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh issue 1197 requests sanitizer regression tests and a guard against unsafe request-array model writes. This PR adds both.

Possibly related PRs

Suggested reviewers: hbenabdallah, nunomaduro

Merge Risk: Low · up to 88f81

The README change appears mergeable with bounded follow-up on the architecture test. Its guard misses two direct-write forms, but neither is shown to occur in the current application.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 88f81

The README filtering rules and public exposure are preserved. The new request-write check has two verified coverage gaps, but neither establishes a newly reachable production authorization bypass. No runtime security boundary was found to be weakened.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A GitHub profile author controls the untrusted README source. If filtering failed, the relevant exposure would be browsers displaying that profile's README. The unchanged controller, frontend sink, and filtering policy provide no evidence that this PR expands that independently attackable scope or grants new server-side authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The two retained findings identify verified coverage gaps in the new guard: updateOrCreate is outside its write-method alternatives, including request data supplied as a later argument, and toArray is outside its request-data alternatives. These expressions can evade the check. The findings do not establish a currently reachable production request-to-write path. The underlying Unguard configuration predates this PR, and the added check does not remove an existing control.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing external-HTML-to-browser boundary remains protected by server-side sanitization. The extracted service preserves element and attribute allowlists, explicit dropped elements, restricted link schemes, HTTPS media restricted to configured GitHub-related hosts, disabled relative URLs, forced link attributes, and the 200,000-character input limit. The frontend sink has no separate client sanitizer.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The cache transition preserves sanitize-before-publication across normal execution and failure. Missing-login and 404 outcomes remain empty, HTTP failure produces false, and sanitizer exceptions occur before cache population. Repeated or concurrent successful fetches may overwrite one another, but each nonempty value follows sanitization first. This is unchanged failure containment, not a new atomicity or idempotency guarantee.

Add toArray() to the request-data guard.

Laravel 13.38.0 Request::toArray() returns the request input and files. The regex omits this accessor, so a future direct request-to-model write would bypass the architecture test. This is a test-coverage gap, not an established authorization bypass.

Add toArray to the request-data alternatives
-    $writes = '/(?:->|::)(?:create|forceCreate|update|fill|forceFill)\(\s*(?:request\(\)|\$this->request|\$request)\s*->\s*(?:(?:all|validated|input)\(\)|(?:except|only)\()/';

Extend the guard to inspect updateOrCreate values.

The current test checks request data only as the first argument. A future direct $request->all() passed as the second updateOrCreate argument would bypass the check.

Identify the second top-level argument with the existing token-aware scan. Do not use updateOrCreate\([^;]*, ..., because [^;]* can consume commas inside nested expressions. The inspected callers currently pass explicit arrays, so this is a regression-coverage gap, not a demonstrated authorization bypass.
