perf: find the nearest commits on the vector index before filtering blocks and mutes - #1224
Signed-in commit search skipped the HNSW index: the blocks/mutes NOT IN filters lower the row estimate enough for the planner to compare the term against every embedding instead (seq scan reading ~265 MB of vectors). Guests weren't affected.
The 40 nearest commits are now looked up on the index first, then filtered.

Cold cache

Trade-off: the seq scan was exact, the index is approximate (as for guests already). On the prod copy, 80% of signed-in searches return the same 20 commits; the rest swap ~2–3 of them for slightly less close ones (~3% of all results). Never fewer results. Acceptable for the speed gain.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Commit search results now better reflect relevant matches while continuing to respect visibility settings and muted-author preferences.
Search results are limited to the requested number of commits, with approved commits and the viewer’s own commits considered when applicable.
Commit search now selects nearby commit IDs before applying visibility and muted-author filters. It loads card data for the filtered results and returns no more than the requested limit.

Summary
Candidate selection and filtering app/Queries/CommitSearchQuery.php
The query selects up to twice the requested limit of nearest eligible commit IDs, then applies visibility and muted-author filters. It loads card data and returns at most the requested limit, ordered by vector distance.
Signed-in searches can return too few results, or none, when nearby commits are blocked or muted. Address the shortlist underfill before merging unless this change in search behavior is explicitly accepted.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 5d4e3
Visibility, block, and mute checks still run before results are returned or sent for relevance evaluation. However, excluded authors can consume shortlist slots and reduce visible results. The behavior under a heavily filtered shortlist remains incompletely validated.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated behavioral exposure is search-result omission for viewers whose block or mute filters remove shortlisted commits. Deliberate crowding would require enough excluded-author commits to be approved, embedded, and ranked near the searched term; practical attacker control over those conditions remains unestablished.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The broader shortlist remains internal to database selection. Unfiltered shortlist bodies are not supplied to relevance evaluation or serialized by the controller; both consume the post-visibility, post-mute collection. Relevance fallback behavior cannot reintroduce excluded commits.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The existing cache stores search-term embeddings rather than authorized result collections. The PR retains per-call visibility evaluation and introduces no persisted shortlist or multi-step authorization-state transition.

- Line 57: Update the query around `nearest()` and `whereIn()` to retain the
bounded initial batch, then fetch additional nearest commit IDs when block and
mute filters leave fewer than `$limit` eligible results. Continue until the
results reach `$limit` or no candidates remain, preserving the existing fast
path when the initial batch is sufficient.
