Closes #1113

  • A bell next to Follow on the profile of someone you follow: ring it to get a notification for each of their new commits (replies left out).
  • Watching is stored on the follow, so unfollowing or a block ends it.
  • New "Commits" filter in the inbox; muted authors and people already notified by a mention or a quote are skipped.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • You can watch followed users from their profiles to receive notifications when they post approved commits. Stopping a watch does not unfollow them.
    • Commit notifications appear in the inbox, with a dedicated Commits filter and a distinct notification style.
    • Watch notifications exclude replies and watchers who are mentioned, quoted, muted, or blocked.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Unfollowing a user also stops watching them.

Walkthrough

The change adds watch preferences for followed accounts and generates committed notifications for eligible commits from watched authors. Profile controls manage watch preferences, and the notification inbox adds a Commits category and display support.

Changes: Watching accounts and commit notifications

Commit creation and approval invoke the notification action. It processes approved, top-level commits with an author, excludes specified watchers, and inserts committed notifications.
Filter and render committed notifications

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 91673

The watcher notification flow and profile controls have no remaining actionable merge-blocking risk.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 91673

The feature preserves recipient ownership and blocked-user controls. The main design risk is that publishing and moderation now perform audience-sized notification work synchronously, so large audiences can affect those operations. Production capacity and concurrent opt-out behavior remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: New watcher delivery loads every eligible follow and constructs the complete notification set inside publishing or approval transactions. The 500-row insert chunks bound individual statements, but not memory or transaction duration. At sufficiently large audiences, notification resource exhaustion can fail publication or roll back an entire approval batch, expanding the failure domain beyond notification delivery. Recipient opt-in and posting throttling constrain abuse, but do not bound work per invocation; the production impact threshold is unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — An approved author can trigger work proportional to their eligible watching audience, but cannot supply arbitrary notification recipients through the new watch endpoint. Resource impact reaches the publishing transaction or all commits in an approval batch; the inspected path does not establish cross-account preference mutation.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The inspected delivery path does not demonstrate a new private-content disclosure. Approved commits were already publicly visible at the base revision, and the new inbox category retains approved-status and mute/block checks. This conclusion is limited to the inspected path and does not resolve the deferred security coverage gap.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Inbox visibility is scoped to the current recipient and rechecks approval, recipient mutes, and blocks in both directions. Current follow/watch state is not a read-time condition, so historical committed notifications can survive unwatch and become visible again after reapproval; the stated subscription contract does not explicitly require historical deletion.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Watcher eligibility is selected before notifications are constructed and inserted, without locking the follow relationship against concurrent opt-out. Read-time block and mute checks limit stale-delivery exposure, but the code does not define a strict delivery cutoff for an overlapping unwatch or unfollow.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For large audiences, consider bounded recipient paging and retryable delivery isolated from publishing and moderation transactions. Preserve deterministic uniqueness, approval checks, current block/mute enforcement, and an explicit opt-out ordering policy.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title says the PR adds a way to watch a user so the watcher is notified of each new commit. The changeset matches this. It adds a watching flag on follows, a watch bell on profiles, POST and DELETE watch routes, a CreateWatchNotifications action that emits committed notifications, and a Commits notification filter. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional feat: prefix, so it describes the primary change from the developer's view.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR summary, measured from the merge base to the reviewed head, lists changes that map to the selective watch feature in #1113. These are the watching migration on follows, UpdateUserWatch, UserWatchController and its form requests, User::isWatching, CreateWatchNotifications and its hook into CreateCommit and UpdateCommitStatuses, the Committed notification type and its filters, the WatchButton component and profile wiring, the Commits inbox filter, and the matching tests. The summary does not show a change unrelated to this feature. The incremental changes since the previous review are not separately established. The whole-PR summary covers them.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1113 asks for a bell or toggle on user profiles and on the following list. The reviewed head implements the profile control. WatchButton renders on resources/js/pages/user/show.tsx. It sets watch state through UserWatchController, the follow-pivot watching flag, and commit notifications through CreateWatchNotifications. The following list is not implemented. resources/js/pages/user/connections.tsx is unchanged between the merge base and the reviewed head. At head, it exposes only is_followed through ConnectionFollowButton, which renders FollowButton. It has no watch control and no watch state. The added tests cover the profile control and commit notifications only. The PR description also limits scope to the profile bell. It does not state that the following list is excluded. Push delivery, which the issue requests, is not established. The implemented notifications are inbox records of type committed. The evidence does not show a push channel for them.

Resolution

Add a watch control to each row of the following list in resources/js/pages/user/connections.tsx. Pass the watch state for each listed user from the server data for the connections page, using the same is_watching pattern as is_followed. Connect the control to the existing watch create and delete routes. Add feature tests that enable and disable watching from the following list. State whether push delivery is required. If it is required, implement and test that delivery.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 57.14% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 7 functions across 24 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
