- Fix wording: "may" and a joining semicolon, "dropdown" and "disabled". - Move applies_to tags to the start of their list items and fix a malformed one. - Declare type: how-to on the relevance and document explorer pages. - Expand KQL on first use and trim the explore fields description. - Say that Discover remembers the last mode, and update stale links to the renamed introduction. Summary
This PR is part of #4898. It restructures the Discover docs around what readers want to do. The 525-line "Explore fields and data with Discover" tutorial becomes a "How Discover works" page, its other content moves to pages that each do one job, classic mode gets its own hub like the one ES|QL mode already has, and the Discover page becomes a hub that points readers to the right guide. It is stacked on the #8973 PR and targets that branch until it merges.
Hub and foundations
explore-analyze/discover.md: now a hub. A "Where to start" list points to the foundations page, the first-query tutorial, and the mode switch guide. Four goal groups follow: query your data, shape what your queries return and show, understand your data, and save and share your explorations. Tasks that work in only one mode name it.explore-analyze/discover/discover-get-started.md: now "How Discover works" (overview, same URL). It explains what you see on screen, the two query modes with the default mode for each version, tabs, saving and sharing, and the context-aware experiences.Classic mode hub and classic-only guides
use-classic-mode.md(new): overview with a "When you need this | Guide" table, mirroringuse-esql.md. It also holds the data view and time range steps that only apply in classic mode.search-and-filter-classic.md,add-fields-to-data-views.md,visualize-field.md(new): moved from the tutorial. Searching and filtering with KQL, Lucene, and filters, adding a runtime field, and opening a field in Lens.show-field-statistics.md,run-pattern-analysis-discover.md: the steps tell readers to switch to classic mode first. Both move under the new hub in the navigation.search-and-filter-classic.md,add-fields-to-data-views.md,show-field-statistics.md: each gets a short pointer for readers in ES|QL mode.Task pages moved from the tutorial
explore-fields.md,inspect-documents.md,compare-documents.md,copy-and-share-documents.md,work-with-tabs.md,generate-alerts-from-discover.md(new), andanalyze-discover-data-with-ai.md(new, in the ES|QL hub in the navigation).inspect-documents.md: also holds the classic-only actions to open a document on its own page or see the documents around it.explore-fields.md: adds the Add breakdown action, which splits the chart by a field.discover-search-for-relevance.md: has synced tabs for ES|QL mode and classic mode, with an ES|QL example.troubleshoot/kibana/discover-empty-fields.md(new): the empty fields FAQ from the tutorial, as a troubleshooting page.explore-analyze/_snippets/discover-cancel-query.md(new): the cancel-query text that applies to every query type, included inesql-results.mdandsearch-and-filter-classic.md.esql-results.mdalso gets the partial results note.explore-analyze/discover/document-explorer.md: the hero image shows ES|QL mode.Navigation and links
redirects.yml,explore-analyze/toc.yml,troubleshoot/toc.yml, and inbound links: every moved anchor has a redirect, and links in this repository point straight to the new pages. The tutorial's "Save your Discover session" section was dropped because
save-open-search.mdalready covers it in full.Generative AI disclosure
Tool(s) and model(s) used: Claude Code with Claude Sonnet 5.5. I moved existing text without rewriting it where possible. The hub, the "How Discover works" page, and the relevance tabs are new prose, and I checked their claims against the existing pages and Kibana source.
