CUSTOM_PARAMETERS was only word-split, so the quotes in -testCategory "a;b" (the form the Unity manual shows) reached Unity literally. The filter matched nothing and the job went green with "No tests were executed".
An unbalanced quote now fails the step with a clear message rather than being guessed at.
src/generated/embedded-assets.ts regenerated (bun run build:assets).
Not changed: mac/steps/build.sh (bash 3.2 has no mapfile) and the Windows .ps1 scripts. These have the same limitation and need a separate approach.
Tests: new src/model/custom-parameters-split.test.ts runs the real mapfile line from both scripts (quote removal, no expansion of $(...)/backticks, empty value). The rest of bun test ./src has failures on my Windows host that are unrelated to this change (System.run tests etc.).
… unquoted
CUSTOM_PARAMETERS was word-split only, so the quotes from the Unity manual
(-testCategory "a;b") were passed to Unity literally, the filter matched
nothing and the run reported success with zero tests executed.
Parse it with xargs (honours quotes and backslashes, never runs a shell) and
printf the tokens back into an array, in ubuntu test.sh and build.sh. Still no
eval. An unbalanced quote now fails the step instead of being guessed at.
The change adds tests for how Ubuntu’s test.sh and build.sh split CUSTOM_PARAMETERS. The tests cover shell-quote removal, literal command-substitution text, and empty input.
Tests run each script’s mapfile line with quoted arguments, substitution-like text, and an empty value. They compare the resulting arguments with expected values.
The quote-parsing change is mergeable with a bounded testing follow-up: add coverage confirming malformed input stops both Ubuntu scripts with a clear error.

Explanation
The description follows the template. It has the Changes section with a clear account of the problem, the xargs and printf approach, the unbalanced-quote handling, the regenerated assets, and the scripts left out of scope. It also has the Checklist with the Readme and Tests items checked. It notes that the Windows and macOS scripts are not changed, which matches the linked issue's scope. The description also reports unrelated test failures on the author's Windows host.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All reviewable changes relate to CUSTOM_PARAMETERS splitting for #259. src/model/custom-parameters-split.test.ts tests the splitting line for quote removal, literal command substitutions and backticks, and empty values. src/generated/embedded-assets.ts is regenerated with bun run build:assets, which follows the dist script change. The dist script contents match the excluded rule !/dist/ and were not inspected, so edits inside them were not checked line by line. The author reports unrelated System.run test failures on a Windows host. The PR makes no change to those tests. No unrelated change was found in the visible evidence.

Explanation
Issue #259 requires either (1) shell-style splitting of CUSTOM_PARAMETERS (quote removal, no expansion, no execution) or (2) a documented and warned whitespace-only contract. The PR chooses option 1 for Ubuntu test.sh and build.sh. The implementation lives in dist/platforms/ubuntu/steps/test.sh and dist/platforms/ubuntu/steps/build.sh. Both files match the excluded rule !/dist/, so their content was not inspected. The reviewable test file src/model/custom-parameters-split.test.ts is described as running the mapfile line from those same excluded scripts. The Ubuntu behavior therefore cannot be confirmed from reviewable evidence. Separately, #259 names build.ps1 as having the same limitation and states that build.sh and build.ps1 would want the same fix. The PR leaves build.ps1 unchanged and states that it is deferred. mac/steps/build.sh is not named in #259. The build.ps1 gap is a concrete item that the issue names.
Resolution
Provide evidence of the dist/platforms/ubuntu/steps/test.sh and build.sh changes. The rule !/dist/ excludes these files, so use independent evidence, such as the diff from a source file or a passing test run that exercises the split. Decide whether build.ps1 is in scope for #259. If it is in scope, the PR must apply the same split to build.ps1 before this check can pass. If it is out of scope, the issue owner must narrow #259 to the Ubuntu path.

Cover the unbalanced-quote check in both split tests.
The split helper runs only the mapfile -t customParameters line. It skips the preceding xargs -r true <<< "$CUSTOM_PARAMETERS" || { ...; exit 1; } line in test.sh and build.sh. It also returns only stdout and ignores the exit status. No existing case uses an unbalanced quote or checks an exit status. Removing the check, or its exit 1, therefore leaves every test passing.
Without the check, xargs produces no stdout for -a "unclosed. mapfile then yields an empty array, and the script can run Unity without the custom parameters. Removing only exit 1 keeps the message but lets the step continue.
Extend the helper to run the xargs -r true line before the mapfile line, and return the exit status and stderr. Add one case per script for -a "unclosed. Assert a non-zero exit status and a stderr that contains Invalid customParameters.

Update the split-test helper around `run` to execute the `xargs -r true`
validation before the `mapfile -t customParameters` line and preserve the

`test.sh` and `build.sh`, asserting a non-zero status and stderr containing
