`Packet::data()` borrows the demuxed payload as a slice, so a safe crate can scan a packet's bytes (the timecode SEI reader needs the Annex B access unit) without touching the raw AVPacket. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Q76eZSpg27LxRTfqLFvFWD
Co-authored-by: Spillmaker <github@spillmaker.no>
The audio and video paths take the packet as a parameter instead of reaching for the read loop's reusable field. Nothing changes for a packet straight off the demuxer; it lets a packet that was held elsewhere first go through exactly the same path.
…and ntp math The FFI-free half of Spillmaker's timecode sync (obs-irl-source `nal-timecodes`), in irl-core so it runs on a virtual clock under test: - `sei`: the HEVC time_code SEI reader (Annex B scan, emulation-prevention strip, the sei_message() walk), keeping the full 9-bit n_frames. - `sync`: the controller as pure state. The hold loop with its settle gate, slew and release rates, the trimmed-mean error filter, the frame rate learned by agreement between timecode seconds, the rolling latency peak, the modulo-hour latency, the playout anchor, and a generic delay line. Every input (clocks, NTP, settings, the audio playout mapping) is passed in per packet; every log line comes back as an event. - `ntp`: the SNTP wire format and kiss-o'-death codes, the burst-host policy, the Theil-Sen drift fit and the published offset estimate. - `consts`: every tuning value, pinned with the rest. Co-authored-by: Spillmaker <github@spillmaker.no>
Spillmaker's dock from the C plugin (src/sync/sync-dock.cpp) compiled through `cc` into a new `sync-dock` crate, behind a C ABI table the Rust side fills at registration and a `DockBackend` trait the plugin implements in safe code. The widget is unchanged apart from that plumbing; it resolves obs-frontend-api at runtime and includes no libobs header. build.rs looks for Qt6 Widgets (IRL_QT_PREFIX, then pkg-config) and builds the crate as a stub with a warning when it is absent, so `cargo build` needs nothing new. IRL_DOCK=0 skips it deliberately. The ABI is size-checked at runtime before anything crosses it. Co-authored-by: Spillmaker <github@spillmaker.no>
…lus a shared offset Port of Spillmaker's timecode sync (obs-irl-source `nal-timecodes`). Every synced source presents the frame stamped T at NTP time T + offset, so feeds arriving over different uplinks, and different OBS instances on the same offset, show the same instant at the same instant. - Every packet the demuxer delivers goes through a delay line of encoded packets on the receiver thread; the controller measures the SEI timecode against the module's own SNTP reference and moves the hold. - The audio output primes only once the line is flowing, and every restart of its clock line is placed where the timecodes say the audio belongs. - A "Sync" checkbox per source; the master switch, the offset and the NTP server are global, persisted in the module's sync.json, and reachable from the dock and over obs-websocket (GetSyncStatus, SetSyncConfig; vendor API v2). Per-source sync status is reported there, not in get_stats. - The SNTP client polls from module load under two policies (burst for the plugin's own server, standard for public pools) with failover to pool.ntp.org and a Theil-Sen crystal-drift correction. Co-authored-by: Spillmaker <github@spillmaker.no>
docs/timecode-sync.md is Spillmaker's design document for the feature, adapted to where the code lives now; README gains the Sync setting, the two vendor requests and the credits; CLAUDE.md the new crate and modules. CI installs Qt6 on every platform (qt6-base-dev on Linux, the obs-deps Qt6 archives via IRL_QT_PREFIX on Windows and macOS) so the shipped artifacts carry the dock, and the isolation checks report it. …s blocked av_read_frame blocks for as long as the network delivers nothing, and the receiver thread both read and released timecode sync's delay line. A delivery gap froze the releases until the read returned, and then reached the jitter buffer a second time, one hold later, when the packets that should have arrived during it came due. Each connection now gets a reader thread that only reads, handing packets over a channel a few packets deep. The receiver waits on it until the next release is due, so a gap is felt once, as without sync. Under backpressure the receiver stops taking packets, the reader blocks, and the transport holds the excess.
… what it holds The A/V simulation drives the real stage with stand-in packets, which an ffmpeg::Packet-only stage did not allow. The stage takes the clock, the NTP time and the global settings as a context per packet; the receiver's SyncControl fills it in.
An end-to-end simulation of sync (the real stage, pump and video thread on one virtual clock, against a sender stamping timecodes) showed the loop missing on a clean link: every start ~330 ms late, then a limit cycle of +-200 ms that broke lip sync and starved the audio, while the dock read Locked. - The seed errs early by the bias instead of late. The anchor at prime can delay the start for free but cannot advance it, so a late seed stayed late. The nominal pipeline now includes the output lead. - The error is measured where presentation will settle, net of the jitter buffer's excess beyond the speed controller's deadband. The loop was steering out an excess the speed controller removes on its own, and the two fought. - No seed and no latency peak until video arrives live, so a relay's keyframe replay or the probe backlog no longer seeds seconds of wrong hold or inflates the recommended offset. - A stream without audio is placed open loop: its fallback anchor is fixed at the first frame, so the hold cannot steer it. tests/av_sync_sim.rs gains the sync stage and pins each case.
… out of low latency audio - Latency is read modulo a quarter hour, not an hour, so a sender on a half-hour or 45-minute time zone that stamps local time is measured right instead of landing on the fold. - A timecode that reads outside -2 s to 60 s of latency is ignored and logged once. A corrupt stamp or a sender clock off NTP seeded a hold of minutes, which filled the delay line and stopped the read loop. - The placement is forgotten when sync stops controlling a source (switched off, timecodes stale), and the pre-roll handback only acts while it controls, so a later clock restart no longer re-delays a source the user took out of sync. - Sync does not act on a source with Low Latency Audio, which has no speed controller to absorb a hold change; every correction was an audible skip or gap. The log and the help text say so.
…6 rollover and concurrent saves - Changing the NTP server keeps the current estimate until the new server answers. Dropping it took every synced source through a stale timecode and a fresh engage on a running pipeline, which starved it. - NTP timestamps past the 2036-02-07 rollover read as the next era, and a server reporting leap indicator 3 (its own clock unsynchronized) is not used. - The NTP thread does not start a DNS lookup once it is stopping, since module unload waits for it. - sync.json saves are serialized (the dock and the websocket vendor both write through one temp file), and a file that does not parse falls back to the backup the previous save kept instead of resetting sync to off. - The dock's fixed-size text fields are cut on a UTF-8 boundary.
… it stays out The control model, the quarter-hour fold, the live gate, the stream-without-audio and Low Latency Audio cases, the known mid-stream re-engage step, and the end-to-end sync sim.
…tall shorter than the hold costs nothing The delay line released each packet a hold after it arrived, so a gap on the link passed straight through, a hold later: sync added latency but no stall resilience. Each packet is now released at its DTS plus its stream's floor (the lowest arrival minus DTS seen) plus the hold. A packet that a gap delayed keeps the slot it would have had. Each stream has its own floor and its own queue, so the skew between audio and video on the wire is kept and the audio hold reads what it would without sync, while each stream's jitter is taken out; a video-only stall no longer reaches the picture. A stream whose DTS goes back by more than a second restarted its timestamps, and the floors start over. The hold ceiling follows the offset instead of the current latency, which a delayed packet reads high. In the simulation a 1.5 s stall at a 3 s offset now costs no underruns and no late frames, against 69 concealed chunks (full stall) or 39 late frames (video stall) without sync. A 3.5 s stall costs 44 against 163.
… re-engaging When a feed's timecodes stopped for 3 s, sync gave its hold back and engaged again when they returned, which seeded the hold as a step on a running pipeline. In the simulation a 6 s dropout cost 5 underruns, a 146 ms excursion from the target and 42 ms of lip sync. The hold now stays where it is while the feed reads No timecode: the last placement is the best estimate, and the line keeps releasing on the timeline. When timecodes return the loop resumes. The hold is given back only when sync is switched off for the source.
WalkthroughThe change adds timecode-based synchronization across source feeds, an SNTP client, and an optional Qt dock. It also adds receiver read-ahead, sync status and configuration websocket requests, and tests and documentation for the new behavior. ChangesTimecode Synchronization

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to Timecode sync is opt-in. The remaining issues are narrow edge cases: a stale clock reference after the NTP server is cleared, an abrupt hold drop after an offset change that follows a timecode outage, and a misleading dock registration result. The VENDOR_API_VERSION doc comment names sync_* stat fields that do not exist.
The PR objectives state that sync status goes only through GetSyncStatus. They also state that get_stats keeps its 11 fields. This doc comment says that version 2 adds "the sync_* stat fields". A client author who reads it can feature-detect version 2 and then look for fields that are not there. Change the comment to describe only the two new requests.

The release-rate floor uses the time since the last correction, so a stale timestamp disables it.
elapsed_ns comes from last_adjust_ns. Only the loop correction (Line 1345) and release_hold update that value. The following paths do not refresh it:
- a timecode outage (
NoTimecode) - an offset change
- a window where the playout mapping is not valid
After such a path, elapsed_ns can cover tens of seconds. Example: timecodes stop for 60 s, the user lowers the offset by 2 s, and timecodes return. Line 1381 then allows a drop of 60 s × 4% = 2.4 s. The 2 s cut lands in one packet. That makes the whole line due at once, which the comment at Lines 1376-1380 says must not happen.
The opposite case also occurs. Before the first correction, last_adjust_ns == 0, so the floor equals prev_hold_ns. An offset decrease is then clamped away, but applied_offset_ms already records it. The loop drains the difference later.
Measure the floor against the previous controlled packet, not the previous correction. Keep last_adjust_ns for the locked slew limit.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Clear anchor_defer_pending while you still hold the audio_state lock.
The receiver releases audio_state after the mem::take, and only then stores false into anchor_defer_pending. The audio pump writes anchor_defer_ns and sets the flag to true under that same lock (fresh_anchor_ns, lines 477-478).
This order loses a deferral in one case. The pump restarts the clock between the take and the store: it writes a new anchor_defer_ns and sets pending = true. The receiver then overwrites the flag with false. The new pre-roll stays in state.sync.anchor_defer_ns, but the controller never gets it. The delay line then does not absorb that wait, and only the slow correction loop can fix the misalignment.
The window is narrow, for example a prime followed closely by a stall restart or a re-anchor. The fix is local: clear the flag inside the locked section, or use swap(false) before you take the value.

Clear the sync on the poll thread when the server is cleared.
set_server("") sets estimate.synced = false under the lock. The poll thread can be inside poll() at that moment, outside the lock. That poll can take a DNS lookup plus up to NTP_BURST receive timeouts. When the poll returns, publish_sample calls OffsetEstimate::publish, which sets synced = true again with the old server's offset.
The next loop iteration reconfigures to the empty host. set_active calls only forget_drift, which does not touch synced. The thread then idles.
The result:
utc_now_ns()keeps returningSomefrom an offset that is never refreshed.GetSyncStatusreportssynced: truewith an empty server and a growingage_ms.- Every synced source keeps holding against that stale reference.
This contradicts the set_server contract: "An empty host stops polling and drops the sync."
Fix: drop the sync on the thread that publishes, after it sees the empty configuration. This covers any publish that was still in flight.

In the poll-thread reconfiguration branch, update the handling around
`st.reconfigure` and `set_active` so that when `st.primary` is empty, the thread
clears `NTP.state.lock().estimate.synced` after applying the new configuration.
Keep the existing polling log for non-empty servers; this ensures any in-flight

The Rust doc for this function says the return value shows whether the dock is registered, so this breaks that contract. Use a separate REGISTERED flag, or forward later calls to irl_sync_dock_register, which is idempotent on the C++ side.
Proposed fix
- if BACKEND.set(backend).is_err() {
- // Already registered once; the dock is a process-lifetime object.
- return true;
- }
+ // The first backend wins; the C++ side is idempotent.
+ let _ = BACKEND.set(backend);
+ let backend = match BACKEND.get() {
+ Some(b) => *b,
+ None => return false,
+ };📝 Committable suggestion

Review comment at @crates/sync-dock/src/lib.rs around lines 505 - 512:
Update `register` so an existing `BACKEND` does not automatically report success
after an earlier registration failed. Reuse the first stored backend and retry
or otherwise check the actual registration outcome, returning true only when the
dock is registered.

Why
Feeds from a main camera and a chase camera arrive over different uplinks with different delays, so cutting between them jumps back and forth in time. Timecode sync holds each feed until its capture time plus one shared offset, read from the sender's SEI timecodes against an NTP reference. Every synced feed, on any OBS instance with the same offset, shows the same captured instant at the same moment.
The feature is Spillmaker's, from the C plugin's
nal-timecodesbranch. It was ported to Rust in September on top of 2.0.1; this branch rebases it onto the 3.x refactors (lean, Model A video delay, audio hold) and fixes what an end-to-end simulation found.What changed
Rebased from the original port, adapted to master:
ffmpegandobsbindings the feature needs (packet payload, JSON persistence, optional request fields).irl-core: the SEI reader, the sync controller and the NTP math.sync-dock: Spillmaker's Qt dock, compiled in when Qt6 is found.irl-source: the delay line on the receiver, the anchor at audio prime, the NTP thread,GetSyncStatusandSetSyncConfig(vendor API 2), the per-source Sync checkbox.GetSyncStatusonly.get_statskeeps its 11 fields.New on top:
receiver/read_ahead.rs), so the delay line keeps releasing whileav_read_frameis blocked. With one thread, a delivery gap hit the audio twice.tests/av_sync_sim.rsruns it with the real pump and video thread on a virtual clock.sync.jsonsaves are serialized and fall back to the backup on a bad file.How to review
Start with
docs/timecode-sync.md: the control model and the "Things that will bite" list explain most of the code. Then readSyncController::observeincrates/irl-core/src/sync.rs, thencrates/irl-source/src/sync/control.rs.Look closely at
receiver/mod.rsandreceiver/read_ahead.rs. The reader thread changes the read path for every source, synced or not.Simulation, clean link, against capture time plus the offset:
Simulation, 1.5 s stall at a 3 s offset: no underruns and no late frames with sync, against 69 concealed chunks (whole link) or 39 late frames (video only) without. A 3.5 s stall, longer than the hold, costs 44 against 163.
The reader thread was also run headless against a live UDP MPEG-TS stream from ffmpeg. It read, survived a 2 s sender freeze, resumed, and stopped in about 50 ms.
