alternative color space based on D3's rainbow

Rick Reusser's fantastic work (e.g., here) is based on D3's rainbow. See also Mike Bostok's work. The rainbow is not uniform in brightness, but perhaps we can make something out of it.

Potential problem: The rainbow is licensed under Apache-2.0.
