Fixes #2489

Description

Allows players to save, load, and delete named game settings presets across both Host Lobby and Single Player game configurations (supersedes and resolves maintainer feedback from #2566).

Highlights

  • Standalone LitElement Controls (<lobby-preset-controls>): Reusable UI component providing a presets dropdown, Load, Delete, preset name input (with character limit & Enter submission), and Save Current button styled with dark-mode Tailwind.
  • Type-Safe Schema & Storage (src/client/LobbyPresets.ts): Zod-based LobbyPresetConfigSchema and LobbyPresetSchema covering all game settings (maps, modes, difficulties, team counts, bot counts, nation counts, modifier toggles, multiplier values, overtime, and host options) without fragile class inheritance hierarchies.
  • UserSettings Integration (src/client/UserSettings.ts): getLobbyPresets() and setLobbyPresets() safely read and write validated presets to localStorage (settings.lobbyPresets).
  • Modal Integrations:
  • Translations (resources/lang/en.json): Added localization keys under lobby_config.preset.*.

Test Plan

  • npm run typecheck (passed clean, 0 errors).
  • npx vitest run tests/client/LobbyPresets.test.ts (20/20 passed).
  • npx vitest run tests/client/HostLobbyModal*.test.ts tests/client/SinglePlayerModal*.test.ts (19/19 passed).
  • oxlint, eslint, and prettier all clean.

Verdict: No blocking issues. 1 finding: 0 high, 0 medium, 1 low.

Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance. All new UI text goes through translateText() and has en.json keys, only en.json was changed, and the LobbyPresets → engine-api/engine-lib imports are allowed by the layer rules.

src/client/SinglePlayerModal.ts

  • [Low] L507-509: (this as any).renderResumeBanner is dead code. SinglePlayerModal has no renderResumeBanner method, on main or in this PR, so this always renders nothing. The as any cast also hides that from the type checker: if a banner method with a different name or signature lands later, this line will silently keep rendering nothing.
Fix: Remove these three lines. Whichever PR adds the resume banner (feat(client): singleplayer save & resume UI and platform storage (companion to #5637) #5624) can put the preset controls under it directly.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Catch storage write failures when you save presets.

setString calls localStorage.setItem. This call can throw a quota error or an error when storage is disabled. handlePresetSave does not catch this error. If the write fails, the save handler throws and the user sees no feedback. Wrap the write in try/catch, return a boolean, and show an error toast in the modals when the write fails.

Based on learnings: "wrap localStorage/sessionStorage reads and writes in try-catch blocks... degrade gracefully".

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Handle storage read failures in getLobbyPresets.

If the browser blocks storage access, getCached throws before parseLobbyPresetsJson runs. Both modal-opening paths call this getter, so preset loading can interrupt opening the configuration screen. Catch the read failure in this getter and return an empty list. Based on learnings: “wrap localStorage/sessionStorage reads and writes in try-catch blocks” and degrade gracefully.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Mark a preset player limit as settled before submitting it.

If a new lobby loads a capped preset and then an uncapped preset before its first lobby-info event, playerLimitLoadedFor stays unset. The second putGameConfig sends maxPlayers: undefined, which leaves the first cap in place rather than removing it. When a preset specifies playerLimit, call markPlayerLimitSettled() before putGameConfig().

Checked the whole PR again for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance:

  • All new UI text goes through translateText() and has en.json keys under lobby_config.preset.*. No other translation files were touched.
  • src/client/LobbyPresets.ts imports only engine-api/engine-lib, which the client is allowed to use. UserSettings ↔ LobbyPresets is a type-only cycle.
  • The earlier (this as any).renderResumeBanner finding is fixed in this head.
  • Every state field and helper the import/export code uses (markPlayerLimitSettled, loadNationCount, the host-cheat fields, userSettings) exists on both modals. afterEach in the test resolves through vitest/globals.

Verdict: No issues found. 0 findings (0 high, 0 medium, 0 low).

Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance:

  • LobbyPresetConfigSchema.teamCount now reuses the exported TeamCountConfigSchema, so invalid strings and negative numbers are rejected. Exporting it from engine-api is allowed by the layer rules.
  • importPresetConfig now defaults donateGold/donateTroops to gameMode === Team when they are missing. This matches what HostLobbyModal already does when the game mode changes.
  • selectedPresetName is cleared in HostLobbyModal.onClose and SinglePlayerModal.resetOptions. The new willUpdate in LobbyPresetControls clears nameInput when selectedName is cleared, and the bound .value updates to match.
  • New tests cover each of these changes.

1785-1829: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Move the shared preset handlers into one helper.

handlePresetSelect, handlePresetLoad, handlePresetSave, and handlePresetDelete are almost the same in this file and in src/client/SinglePlayerModal.ts (Lines 801-844). The only differences are the publiclyListed guard and the import call. Copies like these drift over time. One example: a past fix for the stored name had to be made in both files.

Use composition, not a shared base class. Create a small controller object in LobbyPresets.ts. It owns the preset list and the selected name. It takes an importConfig callback, an exportConfig callback, and a canLoad callback. Each modal then holds one controller instance.

@coderabbitai Thanks for the suggestion! I am skipping the composed controller extraction for these modal handlers:

  1. Direct Lit Component Reactivity: In both HostLobbyModal and SinglePlayerModal, lobbyPresets and selectedPresetName are reactive @state() properties. Modifying them directly inside their respective modal handlers ensures straightforward Lit change detection and template re-renders.
  2. Decoupled Business Logic: Storage persistence, validation, and array operations are already cleanly encapsulated in standalone helpers (saveLobbyPreset, deleteLobbyPreset, parseLobbyPresetsJson).
  3. Simplicity: The handlers are concise (~40 lines total). Introducing an extra controller layer with callbacks would add unnecessary indirection for this scope.

@LoSt543215543 Thanks for the clarification. Keeping these handlers in the modal components is reasonable. Local handlers update the reactive state directly, while shared helpers keep persistence and validation separate.

I withdraw the controller extraction suggestion. No change is needed for this suggestion.

Learning: In `src/client/HostLobbyModal.ts` and `src/client/SinglePlayerModal.ts`, keep the concise lobby-preset handlers local to their Lit components. They directly update the reactive `state()` properties `lobbyPresets` and `selectedPresetName`. Shared persistence, validation, and array operations are already encapsulated in `saveLobbyPreset`, `deleteLobbyPreset`, and `parseLobbyPresetsJson` in `src/client/LobbyPresets.ts`. Do not recommend a composed controller extraction solely to remove this small amount of handler duplication.

Your explanation matches the existing learning for these handlers. I withdraw the composed controller extraction suggestion. No change is needed.

🤖 Claude Code Review

Reviewed range: 806698c..72f3330 (incremental).

Verdict: No issues found. 0 findings (0 high, 0 medium, 0 low).

Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance:

  • LobbyPresetControls.handleSave no longer sets selectedName itself after sending preset-save. The parent modals already set selectedPresetName on a successful save (saved ? saved.name : name.trim()), and that value flows down through .selectedName. On a failed save, the dropdown now keeps the parent's current selection. Before, the child overwrote it locally and fell out of sync with the parent.
  • willUpdate clears nameInput only when selectedName becomes empty, so the typed name stays in the input until the parent confirms the save.
  • The new test assertion (element.selectedName stays "" when there is no parent) matches the new behavior.

🤖 Claude Code Review

Reviewed range: 72f3330..ca911cc

Verdict: No issues found. 0 findings (0 high, 0 medium, 0 low).

This range is a merge of main into the branch. Every hunk in it comes from the base branch: the oxfmt reformatting of Lit template expressions, the saved-games panel, the username length constants, map layers, and translation updates. None of the PR's own preset code changed (LobbyPresets.ts, LobbyPresetControls.ts, the preset wiring in HostLobbyModal/SinglePlayerModal/UserSettings, lobby_config.preset.* in en.json, the tests). The symbols the PR depends on are still there after the merge: TeamCountConfigSchema, DOOMSDAY_CLOCK_SPEEDS, showToast, and the modal imports.

🤖 Claude Code Review

Reviewed range: ca911cc → 2a91674 (incremental).

Verdict: No issues found. Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance. (0 critical, 0 major, 0 minor)

The changes in this range are formatter-only reflows of two template expressions in src/client/components/LobbyPresetControls.ts and an import consolidation in tests/client/LobbyPresets.test.ts. Dropping the bare import "../../src/client/components/LobbyPresetControls" is safe even though the remaining named import is type-only (and so elided): the test also instantiates HostLobbyModal/SinglePlayerModal, which side-effect-import the component, so <lobby-preset-controls> is still registered.
